Cairn India has big plan in Barmer Oil field of Rajasthan

Cairn India, a subsidiary of Vedanta Resources, is planning to commercialise gas production from its Barmer basin in Rajasthan. The basin under Cairn India, which comprises three main oil fields — Mangala, Bhagyam and Aishwarya and smaller oil and gas fields of Saraswati, Raageshwari, etc — currently produces 175,000 barrel of oil per day (bopd) commercially. The Raageshwari fields produce some marginal gas, which is being used for internal purposes. The firm plans to increase the quantum of this production to sell it commercially. "This year has been very exciting for Cairn India as we have discovered gas in the Rajasthan block and efforts will be made to bring that into production as quickly as possible. The high exploration potential of the block is evident from the fact that more than 100 prospects and leads have been identified, and we have pegged the total oil production potential to 3,00,000 bpd, for which we hope to get speedy approvals from the government," said Navin Agarwal, chairman, Cairn India. "We are producing small quantities of gas in Barmer, but that's largely used for our internal consumption. These new gas discoveries are over and above that," added P Elango, interim CEO, Cairn India. These officials were speaking on the sidelines of Cairn India's sixth annual general meeting in Mumbai .
At the AGM, the company said it plans to spend $2 billion over the next two years; of this, $600 million would be spent towards exploration in Rajasthan. "The resource base for the block is now estimated to be 7.3 billion barrels of oil equivalent in-place - an increase of over 11%," said Agarwal.

Neil Armstrong passes away

Former United States astronaut, and global icon Neil Armstrong, the first person to set foot on the moon, passed away at the age of 82, on Saturday. Armstrong underwent a heart-bypass surgery earlier this month, just two days after his birthday on 5th August, to relieve blocked coronary arteries. As commander of the Apollo 11 mission, Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the moon on July 20, 1969. As he stepped on the moon's dusty surface, Armstrong said: "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind." The Apollo 11 moon mission turned out to be Armstrong's last space flight. The following year he was appointed to a desk job, being named NASA's deputy associate administrator for aeronautics in the office of advanced research and technology.
He left NASA a year later to become a professor of engineering at the University of Cincinnati. The former astronaut lived in the Cincinnati area with his wife, Carol. Armstrong was born 5th August, 1930, on a farm near Wapakoneta in western Ohio. He took his first airplane ride at age 6 and developed a fascination with aviation that prompted him to build model airplanes and conduct experiments in a homemade wind tunnel. As a boy, he worked at a pharmacy and took flying lessons. He was licensed to fly at 16, before he got his driver's license.

Over 300 mm of rain was recorded in Jaipur tehsil and 170 mm in Jaipur city killing eight in the capital and two each in Jaipur rural, Dholpur and Dausa district. Normal life and vehicular traffic came to a standstill in several districts, including Sikar, Dausa, Jhunjhunu and Dholpur due to the heavy rains. The state capital reported its heaviest rainfall in over three decades on Tuesday. With the rains continuing for nearly four hours yesterday also, people spent a sleepless night as water gushed into their houses, damaging belongings. In several slum areas, people were forced to take shelter on rooftops.
The state capital reported its heaviest rainfall in over three decades on Wednesday. It didn't rain late on Wednesday night though. Authorities have decided to shut primary schools for the second day in a row. Roads in many areas of the city caved in and many areas remained waterlogged and rail traffic was affected as well. Around 20,000 people have been asked to move to safer places from low lying areas. The Army has been put on alert and the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister of Haryana BS Hooda have offered assistance to the Gehlot government. In the wake of heavy rains, the district administration has instructed private and government schools to declare a holiday for nursery to Class VI students.
