Harish Choudhary given charge of Punjab

Congress MP Harish Choudhary has been appointed national secretary of the All India Congress Committee and given charge of party affairs in Punjab or new Prabhari of Punjab. Choudhary is the MP from Rajasthan's Barmer. The other development in Punjab by congress high command on Tuesday is Pratap Singh Bajwa appointed as the new chief of its Punjab unit, replacing Capt Amarinder Singh. Bajwa, the party MP from Gurdaspur, has replaced Amarinder, Congress general secretary Janardhan Dwivedi said. Amarinder, a former chief minister, was under a cloud after the Congress failed to dislodge the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in the January 2012 elections. The Congress recently lost the Moga bypoll, held after its sitting legislator resigned and joined the SAD.
Harish Choudharyis 42 years old Loksabha MP, elected from Barmer of Rajasthan state as a member of Indian National Congress Party. Harish Choudhary is a first time MP who defeated Jaswant Singh’s politician son Manvendra. He was earlier an MLA. Harish won from a constituency which is the largest in the country.

Dara Singh passes away

Wrestler and actor Dara Singh, 84, died today in Mumbai at him home. He was admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital last Saturday and took last breath today morning at 7:30 PM as per his son Bindu Dara singh.  Dara Singh, had been battling for his life in a Mumbai hospital since the last four days, but was on Wednesday shifted back home after doctors said he has "less chance of recovery" due to significant damage to his brain. The 84-year-actor was admitted to Kokilaben Hospital in an emergency condition on July 7. His family doctor R.K. Agarwal also confirmed the death of bindu dara singh.
A wrestling champ, he made his way from local tournaments to the international arena competing with some of the biggest names like Oriental Champion King Kong, George Gordienko. The wrestler who had over 500 fights to his credit was the Commonwealth champion in 1959 and Champion of the World in 1968. He retired from wrestling in 1983. He made his entry into films in early 1960s and was cast opposite actress Mumtaz in several movies. Often regarded as the Action King of Bollywood in the Hollywood inspired Hindi films such as Tarzan and King Kong amongst many others. But his most memorable performance remains as Hanuman on the popular 1980's television series Ramayan. The actor who also directed several punjabi films continued to act in films and was last seen in the hit movie, Jab We Met in 2007.

Chandigarh-Ajmer Garib Rath from 1st July

The services of 12083-Garib Rath, which presently runs between Jaipur and Chandigarh thrice in a week, will be extended up to Ajmer from July 1. A North Western Railway Spokesman said here that the train would leave Ajmer at 1755 hrs to reach Jaipur at 2000 hrs and leave from here for Chandigarh at 2010 hrs. Similarly, the 12084 train would reach Jaipur from Chandigarh at 0730 hrs and would proceed for Ajmer at 0745 hrs, the spokesman said. The announcement for extending the service up to Ajmer was made in the rail budget for the current fiscal, he added.

Punjab BJP MLA Khurana arrested in Bribe Case

BJP MLA Raj Khurana in Punjab was arrested by the CBI for allegedly taking bribe. His house was raided on Wednesday night. He was sent to CBI custody for two days. The incident came to light when the CBI team led by DIG Mahesh Aggarwal raided the residence of Khurana in Sector 39 in Chandigarh on Wednesday night and also questioned a government employee Devinder Singh, who is also the Chief Parliamentary Secretary (Finance) in the Parkash Singh Badal-led SAD-BJP alliance government. In fact, Devinder had allegedly demanded money on behalf of Khurana to offer it to a Punjab minister for some official work. However, the CBI has not found any incriminating document from Khurana's residence.
Khurana represents Rajpura constituency. He was in Congress but joined the BJP ahead of the last Assembly elections in Punjab. Both Khurana and Devinder were arrested under Prevention of Corruption Act. The case came few days after Sohan Singh Thandal, Chief Parliamentary Secretary (CPS) in the SAD-BJP alliance, was sentenced by the Mohali Court for having disproportionate assets.

Sachin Pilot launches BSNL’s Value-added Services in Punjab

Union Minister of State for Communication and Information Technology Sachin Pilot on Sunday admitted that the quality of state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited's mobile services still left much to be desired and that customers had to bear problems such as call and signal dropping. Pilot was in Chandigarh to launch BSNL's value-added services (VAS) in Punjab. The VAS, which include 'dial a video', 'live share services' and 'video SMS' services, would transform communications for users in the state, said Pilot.

'Dial a video' services can be used to access entertainment or video based services on cell phones while on the move without the need for subscribing to a special data plan or using particular settings; one just needs video call enabled phone, according to a BSNL official.
"With 'live share services', users will be able to share videos instantly through their mobile phones with their families, colleagues, and friends over SMS or popular social networking sites.
The 'video SMS service' will allow users to leave video messages for anyone as long as they have a phone which supports video calls," the official added.

India's new national census has put the population at about 1.21 billion people, or 17% of the world population, the census commissioner said.The population comprising 623.7 million males and 586.5 million females is almost equal to the combined population of the United States, Indonesia, Brazil, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Japan put together. The population has increased by more than 181 million during the decade 2001-2011, the report said. The growth rate in 2011 is 17.64 per cent in comparison to 21.15 per cent in 2001.

Two killed in encounter with Haryana police

Two suspected associates of a man, wanted in a case of alleged robbery, were killed on Thursday night and one injured in an encounter with a Haryana police team in Rajasthan's Sriganganagar district. The Haryana police team in a vehicle was chasing robbery accused Sukhvinder Singh who was in a car with his two associates. When they entered Sriganganagar, the police team challenged them, sparking the encounter at Padampur area, Rupendra Singh, Sriganganagar SP, said.
He said two persons identified as Jaggi and Dheeru were killed and Sukhvinder was injured in the encounter. Sukhvinder was arrested and shifted to the district hospital. "When we stopped both the vehicles near 1-TK area, the Haryana police team members introduced themselves and informed us about the case. Earlier, it was thought to be a gangwar", Singh said.

Jat agitation affects rail services in Northern India. The agitators sat on rail tracks between Ajarka and Bawal on the Delhi-Jaipur route affecting movement of trains, a Railway spokesman said in the Rajasthan capital. Train services on Hisar-Bhiwani, Hisar-Jakhal and Hisar-Sadalpur remained affected for the eighth straight day today as activists of the Jat Aarakshan Sangharsh Samiti staged sit-ins at various places in Haryana's Hisar district. More Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel were deployed in-and-around Muradpur canal in Ghaziabad district in view of protesters' threat to disrupt water supply to the national capital.
Jats have threatened to cut all essential supplies to Delhi if their demands are not met by March 17. Agitators also plan to block the supply of oil from Mathura refinery to Delhi. A Jat Sikh organisation has warned of a stir in Punjab if the demand of the community for quota in jobs is not met immediately. A decision in this regard will be taken after observing the response of the authorities, Jat Sikh Sabha chief Suchha Singh Bajwa said in Jalandhar. The agitators are demanding inclusion of Jats in the list of Other Backward Classes (OBC) to enable them avail the benefit of quota in government jobs.

ICICI Ex-employees dupe customers Rs 9.3 lakh

Three Ex-employees of an insurance company duped a customer of around Rs 9.30 lakhs. The case came to light when the costumer contacted the company for his insurance policy. The accused are ex-employees of ICICI Prudential, the insurance company that they duped. Amit Jain, a resident of Delhi, got an insurance policy from ICICI Prudential and paid a premium of Rs 2 lakh per year, starting from 2005. The three accused, Rahul Jain, Sunil Lekhi, Jatinder Kumar; acted as brothers of Amit Jain and got more than 9 lakh rupees from ICICI Prudential. The three first called up the insurance company and changed the basic address and phone numbers for the policy. They posed as Amit Jain’s brother and got the address changed to Chandigarh. They even got a duplicate policy saying that the original policy was lost. The three miscreants were able to dupe the insurance company. It was only recently that Amit Jain contacted the company for his policy. State Manager of ICICI Prudential Ravinder Singh filed a complaint with police on discovering that the costumer had been duped along with the company. Police are investigating the case.

Rajasthan had its proud moment on Tuesday with three persons from the state featuring in the list of Padma Shri awardees announced a day ahead of Republic Day. Commonwealth gold-winning discus thrower Krishna Poonia, actor Irrfan Khan and poet and translator Dr Chandra Prakash Deval have been named for this year's award. Irrfan's family in Jaipur considers his name featuring among the recipients of the country's highest citizen award an unprecedented honour. His brother Salman, who lives at Jal Mahal road at their parental house, said, "Humein to khabar hi nahin, itna bada award mil gaya (We had no idea that he had won such a big award)."

Poonia spoke in a similar tone, "I had no idea I was even nominated. This kind of motivation would definitely take athletics and discus throw to new heights." She added, "Rajasthan mein to pyaar mila hi, ab desh ne yeh samman diya hai (The state has loved me and now the country has given me this honour." However, Deval sounded happy, but added he wished the Rajasthani language also got the place it deserved. "I would like to see Rajasthani getting this kind of recognition. It of course makes one happy when to get such awards, but what about the language," he asked.

IFFCO chairman Surinder Jakhar shot dead accidentally

Surinder Jakhar, chairman of IFFCO and son of former Lok Sabha speaker Balram Jakhar, was shot dead Monday under mysterious circumstances near here, police said. Surinder was brought in an injured condition to a hospital here, some 350 km from Chandigarh, where he was pronounced dead. His driver too sustained bullet injuries. IFFCO (Indian Farmers Fertiliser Co-operative Ltd.) is a state-run fertiliser major. Surinder Jakhar's younger brother Sunil is a Congress legislator in Punjab.
Surinder, the second of the three sons of senior Congress leader and former Madhya Pradesh governor Balarm Jakhar, is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter. He was involved with the cooperatives for nearly three decades. Surinder Jakhar's family, in a statement to the police, said he was killed in an accidental fire from his pistol at his farmhouse in Maujgarh village, SP (Abohar) Varinder Brar said. The exact cause of the death would be known after the post mortem, the SP said. Expressing grief over Surinder Jakhar's death, Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said his contribution to the cooperative movement was invaluable. "His death is a personal loss to me as we always have close ties with the Jakhar family," he said.

Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Terminated from IPL

Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab have been terminated from the lucrative Indian Premier League ‘for violation of the franchise agreement’ but the new Kochi franchise has been given time to make amends, the Indian cricket board said Sunday. ‘The Governing Council sought legal opinion and come to the conclusion that the contracts of the Rajasthan and Punjab franchises needs to be cancelled for the violation of the franchise agreement,’ Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Shashank Manohar said here. The decisions were taken unanimously, he told reporters.
He also said the Kochi franchise hadn’t breached its agreement with the IPL and had thus been given 10 days to set its house in order. ‘Kochi has not yet breached the agreement. There are some internal disputes. The decision to terminate the contract of Punjab andRajasthan franchises were taken based on legal opinion and the breaches committed by these franchises,’ Manohar said in response to persistent questions from reporters as to why Kochi had been treated differently. Asked about the breaches committed by Rajasthan Royals, who won the inaugural IPL in 2008, Manohar said: ‘They had a different bidder during auctions. The agreement was entered in the name of a different company. The shareholding patterns were different and then the shares were transferred to different people without the permission of the Governing Council.’ He denied that the action had to do with the proximity of suspended IPL commissioner Lalit Modi with one of the suspended franchises. ‘The decisions were not taken due to any person,’ Manohar said, without elaborating. Rajasthan Royals co-owner Shilpa Shetty said she was shocked. ‘I am very shocked. I have not received any letter (informing me of the action). I need to know the basis of the action,’ Bollywood star Shetty said.
‘It was also decided unanimously that the franchise agreement with K.P.H. Dream Cricket Pvt Ltd and Jaipur IPL Cricket Pvt Ltd be terminated forthwith. ‘It was also decided to issue a notice to the unincorporated joint venture holding the Kochi franchise calling upon them to resolve all their disputes and form a joint venture company which will hold the IPL franchise rights. ‘P.R. Raman, advocate for BCCI, has been given instructions to issue all the three notices,’ the statement added.

Some parts of Moga in Punjab were also affected due to the breach as flood waters reached Nihalsingwala area. Rain has cost Haryana a loss of at least Rs 650 crore; crops worth Rs 400 crore have been damaged. The estimated damage to the roads is Rs 205 crore and the irrgation network has also been damaged. The loss could be about Rs 50 crore.

25 year of Operation Blue star, one of Political Disgraces

This week is the 25th anniversary of the three day long siege of the Golden Temple by the Indian government. That siege of course not only led to the deaths of hundreds of people, but also led to Indira Gandhi’s assassination, the anti-Sikh pogroms in New Delhi and other parts of India, the mid-air explosion of the Air India flight to Toronto (killing over 300 people) and the “counter-insurgency” operations in India which led to the further deaths and imprisonment of tens of thousands of Punjabis.

The Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of the Sikh religion, the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) and Sikh radicals are already planning events at the temple complex, where the holiest of Sikh shrines Harmandar Sahib (popularly called Golden Temple) is located, here in the first week of June to coincide with the 25th anniversary of Operation Bluestar, the army's codename for the operation. Indian Army units had used heavy artillery against the terrorist militia, led by the separatist preacher Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, holed up inside the shrine complex. Hundreds of people inside the shrine, including Bhindranwale and his armed supporters, and army and police personnel lost their lives in the battle.
Operation Blue Star(3–6 June 1984) was an Indian military operation ordered by Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India,to remove Sikh separatists who were amassing weapons in the Golden Temple in Amritsar. The operation was launched in response to a deterioration of law and order in the Indian state of Punjab. The operation was carried out by Indian army troops with tanks and armoured vehicles. Militarily successful, the operation aroused immense controversy, and the government's justification for the timing and style of the attack are still under debate. Operation Bluestar was included in the Top 10 Political Disgraces by India Today magazine. Official reports put the number of deaths among the Indian army at 83 and the number of civilian deaths at 492, though independent estimates ran much higher.

Punjab DGP will be new NSG chief

Director General of Police N P S Aulakh has been appointed as the new chief of the elite National Security Guards (NSG) and will assume charge on March 1. Aulakh, a 1972-batch IPS officer, will replace J K Dutta who is retiring on Saturday, official sources said in Chandigarh on Friday.

He was appointed the Punjab DGP in March 2007 after the formation of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)-BJP combine government in the state. Aulakh is to retire in August 2010. Aulakh has served as Deputy Inspector General (BSF) in Kashmir and also as additional Director General (West) in the Border Security Force. The Punjab government had forwarded his name for the central deputation recently. It received a communication from the Ministry of Home Affairs on Thursday, the sources said.
