The government today cleared the appointment of Vice Admiral Nirmal Kumar Verma as the new navy chief. He will succeed Admiral Sureesh Mehta who retires from service on August 31 this year. Vice Admiral Verma, presently the navy's Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Eastern Naval Command, was commissioned into the navy's executive branch on 1 July 1970.
He has commanded the Leander class frigate Udaygiri, the guided missile destroyer Ranvir and the aircraft carrier INS Viraat. Before taking over as FOC-in-C East, he was the navy's vice chief of staff at naval headquarters. An alumnus of the Royal Naval Staff College, UK and the Naval War College, USA, Admiral Verma has held instructional posts at the National Defence College as senior directing staff and at the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington. He has also commanded the naval academy, Goa.
