Banganga fair is one of the oldest fairs probably 200 years old, since the time of the erection of the Radha-Krishna temple at Bairath district of Jaipur. It is held near a rivulet 11 km away from Bairath on the full moon day of Vaisakh (April-May). The stream is believed to have sprung up when Bhishma Pitamah (a warrior in Mahabharata) felt thirsty and then the great archer Arjun shot an arrow to get water for him. Thousands of devotees from all over Rajasthan and beyond come to the fair to take a dip in the holy water of Banganga stream. The Banganga riverbank has numerous other holy shrines which the people make a point to visit during the fair. The math of Goswamiji, Temple of Lord Hanuman, Shiva and Ganga Bihari are a must visit during the fair. During the fair devotees assemble at the Radha-Krishna temple in the morning and subsequently pray in the temple and take the holy dip at the Banganga ghats which is considered an act of getting rid of their sins and cleansing the soul.
The Banganga fair is popular not only for religious reasons but also for getting a flavor of Rajasthan culture which is displayed at the numerous stalls which sell Rajasthani textiles, handicrafts and of course authentic Rajasthani food. The fair thus has a lot of value for the traders who come to sell their goods in the market. The fair is a treat for children also with all kinds of rides the kids can enjoy here.
