Student Protest and Lathicharge at Subodh College Jaipur

The police on Monday used force to disperse a group of students who forcibly tried to enter a private college on Tonk Road, demanding action against another group involved in beating of a junior student recently. The scuffle started at 10 am when 100-odd students gathered at the gate of Subodh College led by NSUI leader Mukesh Bhakar raising slogans against the college administration. The situation went out of control when students started damaging the college property. In a bid to disperse the students creating ruckus on the road, the police swung into action. It is reported that atleast one student was injured and half-a-dozen others received minor injuries in clash with police. Furious over police move, the students then disrupted the traffic for more than 30 minutes and caused inconvenience to thousands of daily commuters. “For 30 minutes panic prevailed on the road as students and commuters were running for shelter,” said police officer.
In Subodh College, more than 2,000 students, including girls were present when the protesters started the agitation. “To avoid any confrontation, we suspended the classes for rest of the day,” said KB Sharma, principal, Subodh College. Police arrested around 14 students on charges of disrupting traffic and damaging college property. The arrested students were taken to three different police stations namely Muhana, Shipra Path and Sanganer. Later in the evening, half of them were released.
