Indian defeated Sri Lanka by an innings and 144 runs

India needed just one and a half sessions on Day 4 to complete the formalities and defeat Sri Lanka by an innings and 144 runs to win the Kanpur Test and take a 1-0 lead in the three-match Test series. India have now won 100 off their 432 Tests and thus becomes the sixth country to win 100 or more Tests after Australia (332), England (310), West Indies (152), South Africa (120) and Pakistan (102). Resuming at 57/4, the Lankans started off with a positive approach but were never in with a chance as the Indians polished off the remaining six wickets despite some resistance from the Thilan Samaraweera-Ajantha Mendis partnership.
The Indians, who scored a massive 642 in their first essay after winning the toss and electing to bat first, were required to bat only once as the visitors could manage just 229 and 269 in their first and second innings respectively. This was also India’s biggest Test victory against Sri Lanka and their third largest victory margin ever.
