Former BJP leader and Member of Parliament Jaswant Singh resigned from the post of Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairman here on Wednesday by sending his resignation letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar. Earlier, in August, after his expulsion from the BJP following his controversial book on Pakistan founder M.A. Jinha, the BJP had requested him to vacate the post. However, Singh had turned down the demand even after many senior BJP leaders including Sushma Swaraj and S S Ahluwalia made failed attempts to convince him for resigning from the PAC chief's post. Following which members of the BJP and some of its allies had stopped attending the PAC's meetings under his chairmanship till date.
Singh resignation also holds importance as the demand for creation of a separate state of Gorkhaland, like the ongoing process for creation of Telangana, is gaining momentum with each passing day. It can be recalled that the Gorkha Janmukti Morcah (GJM), a group which wants creation of a separate State Gorkhaland, support Jaswant Singh from Darjeeling constituency of West Bengal during the Lok Sabha polls of May 2009.
