Union rural development department has finally sanctioned Rs 4,000 crore under the Prime Minister’s Gramen Sadak Yogana (PMGRY) to the state. Union rural development and panchayati raj minister C P Joshi said on Monday 5,749 habitation would be connected by all-weather roads under the scheme. The target is to construct 17,000 km of roads at a cost of Rs 4,000 crore. Joshi termed the new allocation as a New Year gift to the state. He said in the first phase Rs 1,530 crore has been earmarked for the construction of Rs 5,675 km of road connecting 1,833 habitation. The allocation for the PMGRY for the state has been held up for years due to some technical hitches.
According to senior ministry officials a mistake committed by the bureaucrats while sending the proposal for the scheme had cost the state dearly. Official said the PMGRY intended to connect habitation while the rural development department of the state government during the BJP rule had sent the proposal on the basis of revenue villages.
