Rajasthan CM Gehlot announces more tax relief

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has completely exempted tax on more essential items including wheat flour, fortified flour, fine flour and suji. The tax reliefs, amounting around Rs 35 crore, were announced by the Chief Minister in the State Assembly yesterday during his reply to the general debate on state budget 2011-12, which was presented in the Assembly by him on March 9. Earlier in the budget speech, Mr Gehlot, who also holds the Finance portfolio, had totally exempted tax on wheat, pulses and many other such items to make food items cheaper.
In his reply to the debate, Mr Gehlot also announced the hike in honorarium MGNREGA personnel, including Assistants, Employment Assistants, Data Entry Operators, Sathins and Sahyogins. The Chief Minister's reply was marred due to slogan shouting coupled with seven adjournments in a row and Mr Gehlot was forced to table his partially read speech amid the din. Leader of the Opposition Vasundhara Raje's speech was also marred following interruptions. She too could not conclude it and thus tabled the tax to record it. In her speech, Ms Raje said, "a weak leader and weak government had presented weak budget at a time when the state economy needed strong political and economic initiatives to boost economy growth and development in the state." She termed the state government's performance on all fronts disappointing and said her previous regime did well in making the desert land a happening destination.
