Rajiv biosphere reserve will soon come up in Rajasthan to ensure effective wildlife protection, proper biodiversity and environment enrichment. Adressing a joint press conference here this afternoon, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and Union Environment and Forest Minister Jairam Ramesh said the mega project stretching over 11,000 sq km area right from Dholpur to Jhalawar would not only ensure biodiversity, but would also provide safe corridor to tigers of Ranthambhore, Kela Devi and Mansingh tiger sanctuaries. The project proposal was being finalised by the state government and would soon be sent to the Centre for approval, they said.
The government was also contemplating move for opening a Center of the US based Smithsonian Institution at Shahpura near Jaipur for working on willife issues. The Environment and Forest Ministry did favour the project and hence the proposal was being sent to the Planning Commission and the Center would be opened soon, Mr Ramesh said. Mr Gehlot said during a high-level meeting held here earlier in the day, the Minister has assured due help from the Centre for the implementation of the project. Besides this, the meeting also discussed vital issues pertaining to different sanctuaries. This included laying of new by-pass roads to prevent vehicular traffic through the core area in Sariska tiger sanctuary and Taal Chhaper Black Buck reserve.
