Rajasthan government has ordered an inquiry into the deaths of three patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) of a government hospital in Jodhpur town allegedly to due to non-availability of oxygen gas, an official said Friday. The three patients — Vinod Panwar, 45, Choti Devi, 60, and Kamla Devi, 35, — were on ventilators in the ICU of Mathura Das Mathur Hospital when the oxygen supply allegedly stopped. The deaths were reported between 11 p.m. Thursday and 4 a.m. Friday.
The incident triggered protests by the patients' relatives who refused to take away the bodies. The matter was resolved after police intervention. Meanwhile, the hospital administration has constituted a committee to probe the matter. Sujana Ram, husband of Kamla Devi, said, "When we reported the shortage of oxygen to the nurse on duty, she called up the supply station. She got the reply that no cylinder was available. I then knocked many hospital doors and managed to get one cylinder after about an hour, but by then it was all over." Hospital's superintendent, Arvind Mathur, who was in Jaipur for a meet, stated that he'll begin his investigation after reaching Jodhpur. But, deputy superintendent C S Vyas, while admitting shortage of oxygen cylinders, said that some time there is low pressure in supply lines due to short supply and outflow in the lines that is lethal for the sufferers who are on life support systems.
We cannot expect such incidents in hospitals. These show the management of such govt. hospitals administration. Although there should be separate staff who can control as well as manage the health centers. More over it is happening in govt. hospital in the home town of CM itself..
