South East Asian Region (SEAR) nations' Health Ministers 29th Meeting (HMM) and 64th annual session of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Regional Committee began here today with commitment for higher priority to solutions to health problems and combating drug resistence. Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad inaugurated the four-day event. WHO Director General Margaret Chan, SEAR Regional Director Samlee Plianbangchang, Union Health Secretary VM Katoch and Rajasthan's Principal Health Secretary BN Sharma shared the podium. Besides the hosts India, Health Ministers and experts/delegates from Bangladesh, Bhutan, DPR Korea, Indonesia, the Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Timor-Leste are participating in the meet.
Expressing satisfaction over the meet's theme--Anti Microbial Resistence--, Mr Azad said ''Besides many other factors affecting health, the emergence and spread of anti microbial resistence is negating achievements made in protecting human life and health from communicable diseases''. He said most important driver of anti mircobial resistence was the irrarional use of microbial agents. The Minister also expressed concern over negligible development in the field of new anti-microrbial agents. The challenge was even bigger for developing countries like SEAR nations which not yet able to fully control communicable diseases were facing mounting challenge of new and emerging infections, he added.
