A court here Friday rejected the interim bail application of suspended additional director general of police (ADGP) A.K. Jain, who surrendered three days ago in connection with the killing of criminal Dara Singh in a staged shootout, a lawyer said. The 1978-batch Indian Police Service officer had sought the interim bail for 14 days after his father Suresh Chand Jain died at his native place in Uttar Pradesh Friday, his lawyer Amar Singh told IANS. Jain is in Central Bureau of Investigation custody at present. "An application seeking interim bail to attend the last rituals of his father was filed in the court of CBI cases. The application was rejected," Singh said.
CBI counsel Sarfaraz Haider Khan protested grant of interim bail on the grounds that the agency is yet to interrogate the accused officer as he had been hospitalized Thursday on complaint of chest pain. Jain, who carried a cash reward of Rs.10 lakh for his arrest, is admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) in the SMS Hospital here. Jain surrendered before a court in Rajasthan Monday, nine months after he disappeared fearing arrest for his alleged role in the killing of criminal Dara Singh in a staged shoot-out. The officer was a proclaimed offender in the case in which Dara Singh was gunned down by a team of state police's Special Operations Group (SOG) on the outskirts of Jaipur Oct 23, 2006. Jain came to the court along with his lawyers around 4 p.m. Monday. Jain is one of the two IPS officers who are accused in the case. While Inspector General of Police A. Ponnuchami was arrested, Jain had gone missing. Apart from Ponnuchami, the CBI arrested nine other policemen - Inspectors Nisar Khan, Naresh Sharma and Subhash Godara, sub-inspectors Satyanarayan Godara and Munshi Lal, assistant sub-inspector Surendra Singh, constables Jagraj and Bardi Prasad and driver Sardar Singh - in the case. Four other policemen - Rajesh Chaudhary, Zulfikar and Arvind - are still on the run.
