Sania Mirza had to play out of her skin to beat 945th ranked local girl Nicha Lertpitaksinchai and book a second round berth in the USD 220,000 Pattaya Open here today.
Sania, who became the first Indian woman to win a Grand Slam title, had to battle past Nicha 7-6 (4) 7-5 in one hour and 51 minutes.
The Indian could convert just six of the 18 breakpoints she earned and dropped her serve five times in the match against the wild card entrant. She next plays winners of the match between Slovakian third seed Dominika Cibulkova and Russian qualifier Vitalia Diatchenko.
