The governing United Progressive Alliance currently has an edge over the Opposition in the forthcoming General Elections but the results may throw up a hung Parliament, predicts a CNN-IBN-CSDS survey. The survey predicts that if elections are held now the UPA is likely to get 36 per cent of the votes, the same as 2004. The Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance would get 29 per cent votes, a decline of 7 per cent from 2004.
The Left parties and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) are expected to get 6 per cent votes each. Translating the vote share into seats, the UPA is likely to end up anywhere between 215 and 235 seats and the NDA will get 165 to 185 seats. The Left Front, which recorded its best performance in Parliament elections in 2004, is unlikely to repeat its impressive performance and will get 35 to 45 seats this time.
