The senior leaders are attending a series of meetings in Delhi, participating in the last minute discussions before the announcement of the names for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.
However, the announcements, which were expected over the weekend, were postponed as the parliamentary board meetings of both the parties were cancelled. The BJP is now expected to announce the names of eight candidates on Tuesday while the first list of Congress, which will include about 10 names, is also expected sometime next week. Chief minister Ashok Gehlot and PCC president Dr C P Joshi were in Delhi on Saturday meeting the party high command. Senior leaders of the BJP including former chief minister Vasundhara Raje, state president Om Prakash Mathur and state election in-charge Shyodan Singh met in Delhi to discuss the list of probable candidates. The party has already announced the names of 11 of its candidates from the state.
The BJP, which found itself on the back-foot after the death of Jaipur MP Girdharilal Bhargav, is now waiting for Congress to announce its candidate from the state capital before they do. "We had announced Bhargav's name for the seat, but now we will have to select our candidate carefully. Nobody is as safe a bet as Bhargav was,'' admitted a senior BJP leader, also accepting the fact that Bhargav's son Manoj is the most probable candidate for the city. Manoj, has not only gained the sympathy-wave of voters but according to sources, is also being backed by former vice-president and senior BJP leader Bhairon Singh Shekhawat.
