About 20 Year ago, Khazan Singh had inspired Jat boys from Munirka and adjoining areas to wade into the algae-tinged pond where he mastered the art of swimming. Now Virender Sehwag’s explosive exploits are driving them to cricket academies in hordes. With a dream of joining the Men in Blue, an increasing number of Jat boys are taking up the gentleman’s game at a young age. Sunny Sehrawat, an 18-year-old fast bowler from Mahipalpur, says: ‘‘I started playing cricket because I loved the game. But I was encouraged to take it up seriously when my mother once said, ‘Sehwag ban ke dikhao’. Many parents have similar dreams for their boys. Sehwag is an idol for everyone in our community.About 20 other boys in the Aravali Cricket Academy where Sehrawat is enrolled are Jats from Mahipalpur, Masoodpur and Kishangarh. Mukesh Diwan, the coach at the six-year-old academy — run from the community park at C-9, Vasant Kunj — agrees that Sehwag has inspired his disciples to a great extent. ‘‘Before Sehwag shot to fame in the late ‘90s, there were hardly any Jat players in the Ranji squad. Today, 40% of Ranji players from Delhi are Jats,’’ Diwan says.
Vinod Sehwag, Virender’s brother who will soon start work on his own cricket academy in Jhajjhar district, says boys in Haryana earlier looked up to Haryana Hurricane Kapil Dev and Ajay Jadeja. ‘‘But probably when Viru started playing international cricket, Jat boys from modest backgrounds and no godfathers in the game felt that they too could make it big,’’ he says.
The physique of boys from the Jat community is an added advantage. If trained well, they can become skilled players. As Jat Boys have tough body and good health they are now more concern towards Sports after the recent success in Cricket, Olympic and other sports by COmmunity.
