Top level Meeting in New Delhi to discuss lankan Situation

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh tonight reviewed the situation in the island nation where the military has launched the "final assault" against LTTE. Singh discussed the issue at a special meeting that was attended by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Defence Minister A K Antony and National Security Adviser M K Narayanan. The meeting was convened in the backdrop of uproar in Tamil Nadu over the situation in Sri Lanka, with political parties, including ruling DMK, pressing the central government to intervene to stop war in the island nation.
DMK has called for a statewide strike tomorrow to protest against continued military operations in Sri Lanka. The situation in Sri Lanka's north is delicate as the army there is marching fast to squeeze LTTE, whose control has now shrunk to an area of eight kms. Thousands of civilian ethnic Tamils are trapped in the 'No-Fire Zone', triggering concerns over their fate. Worried over the humanitarian situation, India has been pressing Sri Lankan government to "pause" the military operation to enable the civilians to leave the 'No-Fire Zone'. Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has, however, decided to rush his special envoy Basil Rajapaksa here to brief India on the latest situation.
