5th Phase electio today, Election result will be announced on 16 May

Loudspeakers that were blaring for nearly two months fell silent and the heat and dust kicked up by intensive electioneering started settling as the campaign for the final and Phase V of the Lok Sabha elections, scheduled for Wednesday (May 13), ended at 5 p.m. on Monday. The poll process that began on April 16 will culminate on May 16 when the votes are counted. A total 1,432 contestants, including 93 women are in the fray in Phase V, which will cover 86 seats in seven States and two Union Territories. The break-up is: Himachal Pradesh 4, Tamil Nadu 39, Uttarakhand 5, Punjab 9, West Bengal 11, Jammu and Kashmir 2, Uttar Pradesh 14 and Puducherry and Chandigarh one each. Over 10.78 crore people are eligible to exercise their franchise through 1,21,632 polling stations. Over five lakh poll personnel will be on duty.Potential troublemakers, numbering 18,957 in 5,995 villages/hamlets, have been detained.
This phase will decide the political fate of personalities such as Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram (Sivaganga), Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker Charnjit Singh Atwal (Fatehgarh Sahib), Trinamool Congress president Mamata Banerjee (Kolkata Dakshin), BJP vice-president Mukthar Abbas Naqvi (Rampur), BJP nominee Varun Gandhi (Pilibhit), his mother Maneka Gandhi (Aonla) and MDMK general secretary Vaiko (Virudhunagar).
