The death toll in the hooch tragedy rose to 48 as 32 people died on Wednesday during treatment in various hospitals of the city. The city crime branch investigating the case has apprehended one suspected bootlegger Harishankar Kahar, who allegedly supplied spurious liquor in the Majoor Gam and Odhav area where most of the deaths have occurred, they said. Kahar is being interrogated along with other bootleggers rounded up in the city, police said. According to police, approximately 52 people are undergoing treatment in various hospitals of the city, out of which the condition of eight is said to be critical. Sixteen people had died on Tuesday. Six police officials including two DySP rank officers and four PIs have been suspended and transfered.
Meanwhile, Minister of State for Home Amit Shah announced in the state Assembly the formation of Commission of Inquiry headed by Retd High Court Justice Kamal Mehta and consisting of retired Gujarat DGP G C Raigar, Deputy director of ForensicScience Laboratory M S Dahiya and Dr Kirit Mithawala of M PShah Cancer Hospital.
