Liberhan Commission on Tuesday submitted its report to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, bringing to an end 17 years of investigation into the 1992 demolition of Babri Masjid in Ayodhya.
The report's submission prompted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to declare its commitment to building a Ram temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya, an issue that had polarised India and led to a chain of political events and hundreds of deaths in communal riots. The Liberhan commission had 48 extensions and 399 hearings involving over 100 witnesses including L K Advani, Murli Manojhar Joshi, Kalyan Singh and Uma Bharati. Retired Justice Liberhan, who moved from Punjab and Haryana High Court to Madras and Andhra Pradesh later, submitted his four-volume report to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh this morning which could be tabled in Parliament that begins its budget session from Thursday.
Home Minister P Chidambaram was also present when Justice Liberhan presented his commission of inquiry report "set up in connection with the Ram Janambhoomi - Babri Masjid incident", said a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO).
