The Feroz Shah Kotla fiasco has raised the hopes of cricket lovers in the city. After Jaipur was allocated an ODI and three IPL matches for 2010, sources at Rajasthan Cricket Association are hopeful that if it is curtains at Kotla for next two years chances are that the Pink City might get to host a test match. This time around it was fancying its chances but it is being learnt that Nagpur has managed to get nod for the Test tie instead of Delhi. “Asking for a Test match this time around was a bit too unrealistic but in case Delhi misses out on Test berth we stand a strong chance,” said a source. He further added that the venue has the best of the facilities and can host a Test tie; also the new team is looking forward to get what maximum it can for the state. While all that raises the hopes, the ground conditions need immediate attention. With not much time left for the allotted India South Africa tie to take place, the ground which right now is in a good condition after an under 19 four-day match was organised between Rajasthan and Baroda will have to be prepared all over again as the Republic Day celebrations for the state might be held there.
An official shares that the ground has been taken over by the cops for the republic day celebrations on December 30 and they will soon begin their preparations. This is the second time in a row that the state administration is going to host the function at the Sawai Man Singh cricket stadium instead of the Chougan Stadium where it was held by the previous government. The official says that though the pitch has been marked and barricaded the other parts of the ground including the outfield will be exposed to preparations. They are of the opinion that after a lot of wait the city has got a chance to host matches and looking at that the venue could have been shifted. "We have ensured that the pitch is not affected, but rest of the ground is not protected. The practice along with the celebration takes a toll on the ground,” he says.
This is something that will have to be put in place with in a month as the match is scheduled for February 22, and is a matter of concern. Officials say that while they can work extra hours ad put other things in place, but grass will grow at its own pace and accordingly things will need to be addressed. “If they can’t shift the venue at least they can ensure that the practice doesn’t take place her as that will reduce the extent of damage,” concludes the source.
