The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has called an emergency meeting of the governing council (GC) of the Indian Premier League (IPL). It is clearly stated on the agenda that the meeting will discuss ans decide the fate of the three teams. Board officials were tightlipped over the likely decision but the heat seems to be on the Jaipur and Mohali-based teams. Insiders say the two teams have violated the franchise agreement and action can be initiated if the Board wants to. As for Kochi, nothing can be said. The Board has received many a letter — from different constituents of the new team — with various claims. They could be asked set the house in order but one never knows what could happen. When contacted, Kochi investors say they have not heard anything from the BCCI and claim that there is no cause for panic. They are confident of surviving Sunday’s scrutiny.
In fact, a section of the Board feels that the IPL should become an eight-team competition — its original avatar — and Sunday’s meeting could go a long way in that direction. Two of the three teams are likely to face the axe.
