Former Inspector-General of Police Liaqat Ali Khan has been elected unopposed as Chairman of the Rajasthan Waqf Board, succeeding Salawat Khan, the national coordinator of Rashtrawadi Muslim Manch, who was appointed during the previous BJP regime. The Waqf Board has been functioning as an ineffective body with practically very little powers ever since the Congress was elected to power in the State in 2008. Mr. Salawat Khan was enjoying perquisites of the rank of a Minister of State even after his tenure ended on September 17 this year.
The State Government appointed 11 new Waqf Board members to replace the previous panel this past month. Mr. Salawat Khan's continuance in office had become embarrassing for the Congress regime as he was considered close to RSS leader Indresh Kumar, whose name figures in the charge-sheet of the 2007 Ajmer dargah blast case. The election of Mr. Liaqat Ali Khan, who holds a prominent position among Muslims of the Shekhawati region, at the Waqf Board headquarters in Jyoti Nagar here was a smooth affair. Following a consensus, only Mr. Khan filed the nomination papers as chairman in the polls held under the supervision of Jaipur Collector Navin Mahajan. Mr. Khan was promoted from the State services to the Indian Police Service and retired as Inspector-General of Police three years ago. He thereafter formally joined the Congress and is said to be enjoying the confidence of Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot.
