Keoladev to get Siberian crane breeding centre

Union Minister for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh said a Siberian crane breeding centre will soon be set up in the Keoladev National Park here. Speaking at a workshop organised by WWF at the Salim Ali Oration Hall in the park here to mark the World Wet-land Day, Mr Ramesh said that Siberian cranes had been an integral part of identity of this park, formerly known as Ghana Bird Sanctuary. In view of this fact, the breeding centre would be set up in association with the International Crane Foundation and World Wildlife Fund(WWF) for the winged visitors from Siberia, which used to take long flights to this wet-land for their winter sojourn untill some years ago.
Mr Ramesh said that efforts would be made at the proposed breeding centre for the cranes to take trail of traditional route of flight taken by their ancestors for return to Siberia after winter sojourn here. Efforts would also be made for ensuring proper supply of water to the park shallow lake, he added.
