Bhanwari Devi Case: Maderna’s name included in FIR

Jodhpur police on Saturday attached minister Mahipal Maderna’s name among the suspects in the previously registered FIR about the missing auxiliary nurse and midwife, Bhanwari Devi. The government nurse’s husband Amarchand accused the minister in the court to have hatched a criminal conspiracy to kidnap, rape and murder her. The lower court at Bilara in Jodhpur heard Amarchand’s complaint for two days and directed the police on Friday to probe the minister’s role. The police were initially reluctant to include Maderna among the suspects on record, even though there were allegations about his ‘illegitimate relations’ with the nurse. “Nobody, be it a cabinet minister, will spared if his involvement is found in the nurse’s missing,” DGP Harish Meena told reporters in Jaipur on Saturday.
With his name in the FIR as an accused, the pressure is mounting on the minister to step down on moral grounds. “Maderna was earlier claiming innocence and refused to step down on the ground that he was not even named in the FIR. Now allegations of rape and murder have been officially leveled against him. What excuse does he have now?" Bharatiya Janata Party state unit chief Arun Chaturvedi said.
