Revenue Minister Hemaram Chaudhary resigned over refinery shifting from the council of ministers late on Wednesday night. Hemaram choudhary resigns over the shifting of the upcoming oil refinery site from Lilala (Barmer) to Pachparda (Jodhpur). On Wednesday, Hemaram Choudhary, the Congress legislator from Gudamalani in Barmer, resigned from the Cabinet in protest while another MLA, Col. Sonaram Choudhary, openly criticised the state government for shifting the site. Hemaram Choudhary was in charge of revenue, colonization and water resources departments in the Rajasthan Government. Barmer has been witnessing protests since the government announced the shifting of the oil refinery site from Lilala to Pachparda. Villagers in Lilala had initially claimed compensation to the tune of Rs 1 crore per bigha to which the state government had reacted sharply and explored another site for the upcoming refinery. Earlier, Sonaram alleged that Gehlot had moved the refinery closer to his home turf Jodhpur. He had questioned why the refinery should be situated 60 km from the oil field that was found at Baytoo.
Chaudhary told farmers that he regretted he could not represent their case effectively before the state government on the refinery’s location. The locals have been irked at the Gehlot-government ever since it decided to shift the site from Leelala to Pachpadra towards June-end. It was yet another setback to chief minister Gehlot who, along with his ministers, was targeted by his party men over the government and organisation’s functioning at the Congress feedback meetings held in Jaipur on Monday-Tuesday. On the refinery issue also the Barmer legislators had directly posed questions to Gehlot in the presence of AICC general secretary in-charge Gurudas Kamat.
