Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today register a major win in Urban Local Body (ULB) polls but suffered rude shocks in the home turf of chief minister Vasundhara Raje who is battling corruption charges. The party lost the Jhalawar municipal council and and Jhalrapatan municipality -- both in Raje's assembly constituency Jhalrapatan -- after a gap of more than 15 years. BJP captured the Ajmer Municipal Corporation by winning 31 of the 60 seats, leaving 22 for the Congress and seven for others. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his delight with the BJP's splendid show for the confidence reposed and thanked the people of Rajasthan. "A big thank you to people of Rajasthan. Congrats to Rajasthan BJP workers & leaders on the commendable performance in the civic polls," he tweeted.
Rajasthan Congress leader Sachin Pilot, however, downplayed his party's dismal show in the civic polls. "Congress comprehensively defeated the BJP in Vasundhara Raje's strong hold, There is less than one percent difference between the vote share of the BJP and the Congress," he added.
