General Motors files for bankruptcy protection

US Automobile company and world automobile giant General Motors (GM) has filed for bankruptcy protection, marking the biggest failure of an industrial company in US history. The widely expected move comes after GM had seen its losses widen following a steep fall in sales in recent years. The move into bankruptcy protection has been backed by the US government, which is now expected to take a 60% stake in the company. The White House is also due to announce an extra $30bn (£18.5bn) of aid for GM. President Barack Obama will host a press conference on GM's future later, to be followed by the firm's chief executive Fritz Henderson. GM, which had already received $20bn of emergency loans since the end of last year, said in its bankruptcy filing that its current debts total $173bn.
GM, once the largest company in the world, has been losing market share since the early 1980s. It has been driven to bankruptcy because of high production costs and by the collapse in credit markets and consumer spending. It made losses of $30bn last year. GM was also slow to move away from producing gas-guzzling SUVs when consumers were looking for more fuel-efficient vehicles. Toyota sold more vehicles than GM in 2008, putting an end to the American company's 77-year reign as the world's biggest carmaker.

Defending champion Nadal knocked out from French open

Rafael Nadal's four-year Roland Garros reign came to a sensational end at the hands of feuding rival Robin Soderling on Sunday as the race for the 2009 title was thrown wide open. Nadal, bidding for a record fifth successive French Open crown, slumped to his first ever defeat here after winning all of his 31 matches since his 2005 debut.
His 6-2, 6-7 (2/7), 6-4, 7-6 (7/2) fourth round loss was made harder to swallow as it came against a man he described as one of the most unpopular in the locker room after an acrimonious Wimbledon clash in 2007. "It's not a tragedy, I had to lose one day. I must accept my defeats with the same level of calm that I accept my victories," said Nadal, who had routed Soderling 6-1, 6-0 at the Rome Masters just a month ago.

LK Advani elected Opposition Leader

L K Advani was on Sunday elected as BJP's Parliamentary party leader and with its drubbing in the just-concluded elections fresh in his mind said the party was "deeply disappointed" at the outcome which belied its "expectations." In his address to the first meeting of the BJP parliamentary party, Advani said, "We have to find out why our performance was poor in states like Rajasthan, UP, Delhi, Haryana, Uttrakhand and Orissa". "We also have to find out why we won less than expected number of seats in states like Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra."
Advani said "naturally" BJP is "deeply disappointed" by the outcome of the elections. "I cannot deny that the expectations in our party as in our support base were much higher than what we have actually achieved. But we accept people's verdict with humility," he said. As Advani is the leader of the single largest opposition party in the Lok Sabha, he will be the Leader of Opposition in the lower house.
