Surender Singh won the men’s 3000m gold as the Indian athletes returned a rich a haul of nine medals at the Asian Grand Prix here on Saturday. Apart from Surender’s gold, four Indians finished second in their events while four others grabbed the third spots at the first ever Asian Grand prix. In men’s 3000m, Surender finished his race in 7:59.52s while teammates Ravinder and Sandip Kumat Batham followed him on second and third positions, respectively.
Krishna Poonia won the silver in the women’s discus throw event with her 57.26m effort but she was way behind the winner Asian Games champion Song Aimin, who recorded 63.91m. Seema Antil bagged bronze with 55.94m. Om Prakash Singh set his new personal best outside of India with a throw of 19.36m in the men’s shot put but it was not enough to beat Chang Minghuang of Chinese Taipei who heaved the put to 19.45m. Asian junior medallist Saurabh Vij took bronze medal with 18.56m.
