Michael Phelps broke the 100 metres butterfly world record at the US Championships in Indiana on Thursday. The 14-times Olympic gold medallist swam the two-lap final in 50.22 sec at Indiana University on Thursday to beat Ian Crocker's mark of 50.40sec set at the 2005 World Championships in Montreal. Phelps previously held the world record for a day at the 2003 World Championships in Barcelona. But Crocker took it from him a day later, then lowered it twice more.
The victory gives Phelps a place in the 100m butterfly at the World Championships in Rome, which start on 18 July. He has already qualified in the 200m butterfly and 200m freestyle as he continues his transformation from swimming middle distances to sprints.
