Congress Government in Rajasthan downgraded the security of former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje to “Y” Category from “Z Plus” has sparked a row. Ms. Raje has accused the Government of acting on “political considerations” while the Congress leadership has termed the decision as a “delayed exercise” coming after 15 long months of her losing power. “I was kept in the ‘Z Plus' category for my security but now I am in ‘Y' category. The State Government, if it chooses so, can take back the two police personnel now given to me as well but then if something unpleasant happens it would be the sole responsibility of the Government,” Ms. Raje said in a statement on Tuesday.
Mr. Gehlot continued to remain in “Y” category in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 (the years in which Ms. Raje was Chief Minister) and only when he became Congress general secretary in-charge of Uttar Pradesh it was revised. “In 2008 too it was ‘Z' category and only 15 days before the elections to the Assembly he was put in ‘Z Plus' category,” the source said. The Home Ministry sources pointed out that a high level committee with Principal Secretary (Home), Additional Director General (Intelligence) of Police and Joint Director, I.B, as members reviewed the security needs of people's representatives on the basis of existing threat perception. “It is not proper to offer or to withdraw security to a leader on the basis of political considerations. It should be done only on merit,” Muktar Abbas Naqvi, national vice-president of the BJP said. The rest of the BJP leadership in the State too has reacted acrimoniously.
