BSNL to connect India during Amarnath Yatra

Indian Govt and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd.(BSNL) to connect Amarnath pilgrimage and their families back home. Now BSNL's network area will follow yatris to the holy cave right from the departure point and keep them in touch with family members on mobile phones. It will address a major concern for Amarnath yatra, which attracts over four lakh people, including the old and infirm, to the religious pilgrimage every year. The BSNL towers now will keep them in constant touch with their homes. The idea to bring the yatra under "network area" is rooted in the push from MoS, communications, Sachin Pilot, to promote mobile telephony in inhospitable terrain.
The Union communications ministry has got a green signal from BSNL that there will be nine towers erected in time to bring the yatra, which begins on July 1, under the mobile network. The entire route till now was out of reach of mobile telephones. While the yatra is only for around two months, sources said mobile telephone infrastructure being created will stay on to help the administration and the local inhabitants separated from the mainstream. Sources said "provisioning of telecom connectivity for Shri Amarnathji Yatra 2010" has been in the works for a while.
