Haryana wins best state award in Energy Conservation

Haryana has bagged the first prize in the 'Best States' category for its performance in the Energy Conservation Programmes in 2009-10. Haryana had become the only state in the country to have bagged the national award for energy conservation for three consecutive years, a spokesman of the Haryana Renewable Development Agency (HAREDA) said in Chandigarh on Monday. He said that the award would be given by Sushil Kumar Shinde, Union Power Minister at the 'National Energy Conservation Day' function to be organised at New Delhi on 14th December.
To recognise efforts made by state governments for mainstreaming energy conservation through various regulatory, promotional and awareness programmes, the Union Ministry of Power, has instituted awards in the 'Best State's' category at the national level, he said. "Various steps taken by Department of Renewable Energy, Haryana and HAREDA in its capacity has resulted in the saving of 165 megawatt of electricity in the state during the year 2009-10," he said. He said the Haryana government had announced a five year State Energy Conservation Action Plan in December 2007 with a target of achieving energy savings of 500 MW by the year 2012.
