Tarun Gogoi sworn in as Assam CM for third term

Congress leader Tarun Gogoi was sworn in as Chief Minister of Assam for the third successive term by Governor J B Patnaik at the Raj Bhavan here today. Mr Gogoi is the second person in the state's history to serve as Chief Minister for three straight terms, after Mr Bimala Prasad Chaliha. Mr Gogoi was administered the oath of office and secrecy at a simple ceremony at the Darbar Hall of the Raj Bhavan. A host of dignitaries, including Union Minister for Development of North-East Region (DoNER Minister) B K Handique, Gauhati High Court Chief Justice M B Lokur and Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, were present on the occasion. Mr Hagrama Mohilary, chief of Bodoland People's Front, the Congress' ally, also attended the function.
Mr Gogoi had led the Congress to a thumping win in the April Assembly polls with the party winning 78 of total 126 Assembly seats. Talking to reporters later, Mr Gogoi said he would fly to Delhi tomorrow to finalise the composition of his Ministry in consultation with the party's central leadership. He promised proper representation of all sections, including women and youth, in the new Cabinet. Mr Gogoi will also take up the matter of increasing the Ministry size to 25 per cent of the total Assembly strength to accommodate diverse ethnic and religious communities.
