Ajmal Kasab, the lone surviving 26/11 terrorist was hanged to death at 7.30 AM at the Yervada Jail in Pune on Wednesday. Kasab's mercy plea was rejected by the President Pranab Mukherjee on 5th November. "Due process of law has been followed," Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil said adding that hanging came after the President of India rejected his mercy petition on 5th November. "This is a true homage to the innocent victims, including policemen and security personnel, who laid down their lives," he said.
Mukherjee's decision comes nearly two months after the Maharashtra home department rejected Kasab's mercy petition that had been addressed to the President. 25-year-old Kasab had been lodged in the Arthur Jail Road in Mumbai ever since he was arrested immediately after the attack in 2008. Although there are some 308 prisoners on the death row in India, none of their mercy petitions have been rejected by the President including December 13, 2001 accused Afzal Guru. There have been no mercy petition rejections during the tenure of President Pratibha Patil. Sources said that while Pakistan was not informed about the date of hanging as that is the prerogative of the State, the rule book was followed with the next of kin being informed.
