While the attempt is to forge a Brahmin-Dalit combination, it is backed by the BSP’s bid to supplement it with Muslim votes, evident in the nomination of 14 minorities which includes weathered warriors who also have a reputation for strongarm tactics. Akbar Ahmed Dumpy, who went out of favour some time back, has been reinstated from Azamgarh. Mayawati, who announced the final list after months of chopping and changing, has plumped for ‘winnability’ even if it comes at the cost of her plank of “anti-criminalisation” which saw her trump Mulayam Singh Yadav not long ago. While her nominees include known historysheeters like Mokhtar Ansari, Afzal Ansari, Rizwan Zaheer, Anna Shukla, Dhananjay Singh and D P Yadav, it has as many as 40 men with at least one criminal case pending in police files. Asked about the opposition’s charge on criminals in BSP, the chief minister told reporters that the rivals should first watch their own conduct.
The selection of candidates seems to be working on the assembly formula. While Brahmins have found three more nominations than 17 dalits from SC seats, the attempt is to ensure the transfer of Brahmin votes to the party candidates in reserved seats to improve their chances of winning since all the parties are forced to field SCs.
In the 2004 Lok Sabha polls, BSP had fielded seven Brahmins, five Thakurs, 18 dalits, 20 Muslims and 30 OBCs. It won 19 seats five dalits, one Brahmin, four Muslims and nine OBCs and same formula she used in 2007 Election and becomes CM of UP with Majority. Mayawati is now gearup with caste and Criminal formula for LS Election 2009 as many Candidates are facing criminal charges.
