Slum free India in Next Five Year - President

UPA government unveiled today its plan for introducing Rajiv Awas Yojana for slum dwellers under JNNURM on the lines of Indira Awas Yojana for rural poor. "The scheme for affordable housing through partnership and the scheme for interest subsidy for urban housing would be dovetailed into the Rajiv Awas Yojana which would extend support under JNNURM to states that are willing to assign property rights to people living in slum areas," President Pratibha Patil said while addressing Parliament. "My government's effort would be to create a slum free India in five years through Rajiv Awas Yojana," she said. UPA will launch a special housing scheme for the urban poor aiming to “create a slum free India” in five years, President Pratibha Patil said Thursday. Rajiv Awas Yojana, the scheme for the urban poor and slum dwellers is on the lines of the Indira Awas Yojana being implemented in the rural areas.
The NREGA would be converged with other programmes to increase land productivity. More transparency and accountablity would be brought through independent monitoring and grievance redressal mechanism will be set up at the district level, she added. Moreover, the President announced the targets for Bharat Nirman would be revised in the second term of the UPA government. Under the Indira Awas Yojna, which exceeded the original target of 60 lakh houses construction between 2004-2009, one crore 20 lakh houses would be constructed in the next five years, she informed.
