Heavy voters turn out in assembly polls, Tamil Nadu recorded an estimated 75.2 per cent, Kerala 74.4 per cent while Puducherry 83.62 as polling ended peacefully in all the three states on Wednesday evening. In Tamil Nadu, Over 75 per cent of the electorate on Wednesday cast their votes in all 234 assembly constituencies. Though polling had closed at 1700 hours, voters who came before the closing time were allowed to cast their vote, officials said. The polling was by and large peaceful, they said.
In Kerala,an estimated 74.4 per cent of voters exercised their franchise on Wednesday as voting ended peacefully in all the 140 assembly segments across the state. According to provisional figures released by Election Commission after polling ended at 5 pm, a total of 74.4 per cent of the 2.31 crore electorate cast their votes, exceeding the 2006 poll percentage of 72.38.
In Puducherry, around 83.62 per cent of the 8.10 lakh voters exercised their franchise in the Union Territory which went to polls on Wednesday to constitute its 30-member Assembly. Official sources said that of the four regions in the UT, Yanam, an enclave in Andhra Pradesh, recorded 49.52 percent polling during the first five hours of polling.
