A
young woman who was flown to Singapore after her brutal gang-rape and
torture in the Indian capital died here early Saturday, the Mount
Elizabeth Hospital announced. The 23-year-old woman, who was raped in a
moving bus, “passed away peacefully,” with her family and officials
from the High Commission of India at her side, according to a statement
from Kelvin Loh, chief executive officer at Mount Elizabeth Hospital.
She had suffered “serious injuries to her body and brain,” he said. An
Air India plane has been sent to Singapore to bring back her body, G.
Prasada Rao, a spokesman for the carrier said. Indian
High Commissioner to Singapore says:-The body of the gangrape victim
will be flown back to India today on a chartered plane: Indian High

Describing the 23-year-old gangrape victim as a "brave daughter of India", President Pranab Mukherjee has said all steps to bring the perpetrators of this "ghastly crime" to justice should be taken to ensure that her death will not be in vain. "She was a brave and courageous girl who fought till the very last minute for her dignity and her life. She is a true hero and symbolises the best in Indian youth and women...The nation will mourn the passing of this brave daughter of India," the President said in his condolence message. He appealed for peace and calm and called upon authorities to take all necessary steps to bring the perpetrators of this ghastly crime to justice.
