Ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal continued her rampaging form as she completed a spectacular hat-trick of titles by clinching the Indonesia Open Super Series with a straight-game triumph over Japan's Sayaka Sato in Jakarta on Sunday. Unbeaten for the past three weeks, the top seeded defending champion defeated her unseeded but resolute rival 21-19 13-21 21-11 in a rollercoaster encounter that lasted 45 minutes. This was Saina's third successive title, having won the Indian Open Grand Prix at home and the Singapore Open Super Series Tournament last week. This is also the 20-year-old's third Super Series title overall. In a see-saw battle, the 19-year-old Sato matched the defending champion shot for shot for most part of the opening game but was undone by her own mistakes at crucial junctures.
Defending champion Saina Nehwal overcame an opening game deficit to reach the semifinal of the Indonesian Open badminton tournament and stay on course for back-to-back Super Series title in Jakarta on Friday. Saina, who on Thursday jumped three spots to third in world rankings after winning the Singapore Super Series, looked rusty against Ella Diehl of Russia in the first game and was doing the catch up job from the start before losing it 17-21. The top seeded Indian, however, shrugged off the initial rustiness and stamped her authority over her opponent in the next two games by using to telling effect her superiority in smashes and long rallies.
A 15-year-old title drought came to an end as India won the Asia Cup cricket tournament after crushing defending champions Sri Lanka by 81 runs in a lop-sided final on Thursday. Electing to bat first, India posted a competitive 268 for six and then defended the total without much hiccup with the seamers producing a scintillating performance, skittling out the hosts for 187 in 44.4 overs at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium. This was India's first Asia Cup triumph since Mohammad Azharuddin had led them to the title in Sharjah in 1995. On that occasion also, India had beaten Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the final.
Julia Gillard has been announced on Thursday as Australia's first woman prime minister after Kevin Rudd stepped down in tears as the ruling Labour Party's leader at a ballot meeting. Gillard, who said that she was "honoured" to head the country, will now decide when to lead the party into the next election. She will be sworn in as prime minister by Governor- General Quentin Bryce at 12.30pm.
In a strategic move to enter the television broadcasting space, Anil Ambani Group firm Reliance Broadcast Network Ltd will form an equal joint venture with US media conglomerate CBS Corp to own and operate TV channels. RBN, previously known as Reliance Media World Ltd, will form a 50:50 joint venture with CBS Studios International, a wholly owned subsidiary of CBS Corp, "for the purpose of owing or operating a portfolio of television channels," the company informed the stock exchanges. With RBN's multi-media presence and integrated sales offerings, combined with the content muscle of CBS Corp, BIG CBS stands to bite into a sizable slice of India's burgeoning television industry. "As currently proposed, the joint venture would include certain programming rights across the countries of India, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, the Maldives and Pakistan for now," it said in a 19th June letter to the Bombay Stock Exchange and National Stock Exchange of India.
RBN and CBS will have equal 50 per cent equity interest in the joint venture. The joint venture will initially broadcast English language general entertainment channels and will explore Hindi and regional language general entertainment channels in the next phase. "RBN and CBS have today (10th June) signed a preliminary, non-binding term sheet, which is subject to, among other things, customary diligence, the negotiation and execution of definitive documentation, etc., which are presently underway and which the parties intend to endeavour in good faith to complete within a period of one month," RBN said. RBN operates India's largest radio network (92.7 BIG FM) and is into outdoor, promotions and events.
Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot Stressing on the importance of education, said no child should be deprived of education in the state. ''We have to keep working with the spirit of the Right to Education Act, which has been implemented in the country and the state so that no child is deprived of education,'' the Chief Minister said, while flagging off an education campaign rally ''Nanhe haath kalam ke saath(small hands with pen)'' from his official residence today. He also signed banners carrying messages to stop child labour. Mr Gehlot emphasised on proper implementation of Shiksha Aapke Dwar -- Sarvshiksha Abhiyan and other projects run by UNICEF and Government of India and the state goverment for child labourers. ''We have to think about how benefit of these schemes could reach to these childern, engaged in child labour. We have to spread awareness among public regarding provision of Child Labour Act so that family elders do not send their childern to work as a labour, ''he said.
Saina Nehwal rallied from behind to beat Mew Choo Wong of Malaysia 20-22, 21-14, 21-12 and clinched the women's singles title in the Yonex-Sunrise India Grand Prix badminton tournament in Chennai on Sunday. After dropping the keenly contested first game, Saina held the temperament and clawed her way back into the contest by pocketing the second game. In the deciding game, the second seed Malaysian often came up with deep returns and powerful smashes close to the back line. Wong score winners twice finding the vacant spots behind Saina, but it was short-lived as the world number six Indian was able to score points almost at will. Meanwhile, another Indian seventh seed RMV Gurusaidutt failed to cross the final hurdle and went down 13-21, 18-21 to unseeded Indonesian Yunus Alamsyah in the men's singles summit clash.

The Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation (RTDC) bring special attraction for football lovers at its hotel and bars. RTTDC will provide FIFA 2010 football worldcup screening also keeping the bar open beyond deadline. According to Dr Manjit Singh, chairman and managing director CMD, "This is the first time such arrangements have being made in RTDC bars for an international event. As part of a special package for the FIFA World Cup 2010, mega screens have been installed in all 27 RTDC bars within the state to woo guests. The RTDC bars will remain open for the month-long FIFA World Cup tournament beginning 11 June." While the first match is to start early the remaining games will be played well past midnight, according to Indian timings. But for the first time, bars at all RTDC hotels will remain open for the duration of the matches every day.
Government on Thursday approved a proposal for investment of Rs 2,430 crore in nearly 200 engineering colleges under a scheme aimed at upgrading the standards of technical education institutions in the country. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, gave the go ahead to the second phase of Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) scheme which has been running since 2003 with World Bank's assistance. The second phase envisages an investment of Rs 2,430 crore in about 200 technical educational institutions with an aim to produce higher quality and more employable engineers, Home Minister P Chidambaram told reporters in New Delhi.
Surging prices notwithstanding, the government has hiked the minimum support price of pulses by up to Rs 700 to a maximum of Rs 3,170 a quintal but support for paddy has been increased by a meager Rs 50 a quintal. The MSP for pulses, considered to be the wholesale market benchmark, is just about 30--50 per cent of retail prices of some varieties like moong, urad and arhar that are being sold for up to Rs 100 a kg in retail market. A decision for raising MSP of kharif crops for 2010-11 was taken at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. An agriculture ministry official later explained that higher MSP was meant as an inducement to farmers to go for increasing the acreage for cultivation of pulses, for which India is a net importer and the sharp rise in prices is on account of higher commodity prices globally.
