Maharani College Jaipur declared first cut-off
Over 3,000 students had applied for B.Com (pass) course against a total of 240 seats, and another 500 students applied for B.Com (honours) which has 60 seats. One could gauge the level of competition as students with even 89.99% were not able to secure a seat. In the reserved categories—OBC, ST and SC—the first cut-off has gone beyond 75%. Students who have failed to secure a seat in the college, are now turning to the private colleges for admission. The college however, is yet to consider the 10% increase in the seats since it hasn’t received the circular from the Rajasthan University. Once it does, a few more students can hope to make it to the college. “I was quite sure to get admission in this college in the second list, which is scheduled to be announced in a week’s time,” said Rituka Sharma, who has scored 85% in commerce.
The list for humanities has sprung the biggest surprise with a substantial increase in the cut-off in comparison to last year. “It has touched an all time high of 76.9% for the pass course in general category. Even for OBC and ST the cut-off remains at 73.23% and 72.62% , which is reflecting a growing interest in arts courses,” said Jain. Against 600 seats for humanities, over 3,500 students had applied. Science stream has also seen an average rise of 1-2% in the cut-off marks. In almost all degree courses in BSC (honours) in Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Zoology, the cut-off has hovered around 70%.

Fuel prices decontrolled; diesel, LPG, kerosene to rise
Besides, this would also help cut down on the government’s huge subsidy bills, as also relieve the oil marketing PSUs of staggering burden on account of selling these fuels much below the market prices. Sundareshan said that the government would, however, continue to “heavily subsidise” the cooking fuels. Oil Minister Murli Deora had, on more than one occasion, briefed the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Mukherjee on the crisis that would befall oil PSUs if no decision was taken on hiking prices. In May, WPI-based inflation provisionally entered double digits at 10.16 percent. State oil firms currently lose about Rs. 215 crore per day on selling fuel below the imported cost. At present, petrol is being sold at Rs. 3.73 a litre below its cost, diesel at a loss of Rs. 3.80 per litre, kerosene at Rs. 18.82 a litre and domestic LPG at a discount of Rs. 261.90 on every 14.2-kg cylinder.

Govt recommends death penalty for Afzal Guru
The petition for mercy to Guru did not find favour from the Home ministry following recommendation of the Delhi LG Tejendra Khanna. The case has been dragging on for nine years. Five terrorists had attacked the parliament on December 13, 2001 leaving seven security personnel dead. Sopore resident Mohammed Afzal Guru was charged with plotting the attack a few days later. On December 18, 2002, the Delhi High Court awarded death sentence to Guru following which he moved the Supreme court. But the apex court upheld the death sentence on August 4, 2005. Guru's hanging was fixed for October 20, 2006 but his wife Tabassum had filed a mercy petition and as a result his execution was stayed. As per procedure, the then President APJ Kalam sought the Home Ministry's views on the plea. The Home Ministry in turn sent the Afzal file to the Delhi government seeking advice where it was held up for four years. The state government acted only after 16 reminders. Lt Governor Tejinder Khanna sought clarifications on the Afzal Guru mercy petition last month on May 18, 2010.
Mercury rise to 49 degree after Phet in Rajasthan
However, there was some respite in store for Southern Rajasthan which witnessed duststorm and thunderstorms on Sunday. At all other places in the state, the maximum temperature has remained nearly six degrees above normal. Thunderstorms or dust storms over the next few hours can check the upward march of the mercury, the Met said. It has predicted isolated duststorm or thunderstorm to hit parts of northwest India, but rules out the possibility of rain. According to the Meteorological office, the monsoon is likely to strengthen from June 25 onwards with formation of low pressure areas over the north Bay of Bengal. This may lead to increase in the rainfall over East and Central India. The east-west seasonal trough is likely to increase the thunderstorm activity over the Gangetic plains.

Jaswant Singh may return back in BJP
Mr. Singh, who represents Darjeeling in the 15th Lok Sabha, was summarily expelled after some senior party leaders objected to his views on Pakistan founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah in a biography authored by him. His expulsion came at the BJP's ‘chintan baithak' in Shimla soon after the party's defeat in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. The demand for his ouster was led by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who alleged that there were derogatory references to India's first Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in his book and it would be difficult for him to explain this away to the people of Gujarat. With several party leaders asking for his expulsion and senior leader L.K. Advani acquiescing by his silence, then party president Rajnath Singh signed off the order expelling Mr. Singh without giving him even a show-cause notice. Ten months later, there are many leaders in the party who feel gross injustice was done to him. Mr. Gadkari had also announced his intention of trying to “bring home” some leaders who had parted company but had continued to believe in the party's ideology.
Rajasthan remembers Laila, Majnu
Before the Kargil conflict this shrine was also open to Pakistani visitors. There are many variations to the legend of Laila and Majnu. In a version popular here Laila is forcibly married off to another man. Her husband challenges majnu but as soon as his sword pierces Majnu's heart, it is Laila who dies. The tomb of Laila Majnu is a major attraction in these parts, therefore it's not surprising that even one of the BSF posts on this border is called the Majnu post.
