Jaipur IOC Depot fire claims 9 Life

The fire at the Indian Oil depot here continued to rage Friday morning, a day after it broke out, with six people still trapped and officials saying nine people could have been killed and nearly 150 injured. The blaze, which broke out at 7.15 p.m. following a minor earthquake, has engulfed the nearby Agro food centre and a power grid. The fire, at the Sitapur industrial area near Jaipur, was of great intensity and the flames could be seen from a distance of over 15 km.
Oil and Petroleum Minister Murli Deora visited the injured at the government-run Sawai Man Singh Hospital here and said it would be another day or two before the blaze could be brought under control. Deora added that six workers of the Indian Oil depot were still trapped and that their chances of survival were bleak. "There is no option but to let the fuel burn. It will take a day or two before the fire could be brought under control," Deora told reporters here.
The depot had 7,000 kilo litres of petrol, 24,000 kilo litres of diesel and 1,000 kilo litres of kerosene. Two truckloads of foam have been brought from a Mathura refinery to extinguish the fire. However, according to officials it could only be put to use when the fuel burns itself.
The district collector has prohibited the entry of anybody within a five kilometre radius of the area under fire. The Jaipur-Kota highway has been closed down for vehicles and about 20 trains scheduled to pass through the nearby railway line have been affected. Nearby villages have also been vacated. Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said all private hospitals have been asked to treat the injured and that the government would pay for their treatment.

Woman mayor for Jaipur, Kpta and Udaipur

The directorate of local bodies (DLB) completed the lottery which decided that this time Jaipur, along with Kota and Udaipur, will have women mayors. According to a DLB release, the lottery was opened for 184 urban local bodies(ULB) across the state out of which 87 ULBs have been reserved for women as per the 50% quota guidelines. This means these ULBs will have women chiefs like mayors or chairpersons. "Jaipur, Kota and Udaipur will have directly elected women (general) mayors," said Joga Ram, director DLB.
Among other highlights, five posts (ULB) in the state have been reserved for the Scheduled Tribes (STs) out which two have been set aside for ST women. Out of 27 reserved Scheduled Castes (SCs) seats 12 ULBs have been reserved for SC women in the state. For the Other Backward Castes(OBCs), out of a total 38, 18 ULB posts have been reserved for women. Total of 114 general posts earmarked for, 55 ULB posts have been put aside for women.

Vasundhara Raje resigns as leader of opposition in Rajasthan

Former Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje met senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani on Friday and submitted her resignation as leader of opposition in the state assembly. "Raje met Advani and tendered her resignation," said a BJP leader, who said he was privy to the development, but refused to be identified as the party had not made an official announcement. The issue has been a tricky one for the party with the leadership asking Raje two months ago in August to accept moral responsibility for the BJP's defeat in the Lok Sabha and the assembly polls in the state and step down.
The BJP was Friday tightlipped on the issue. Party vice president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said the matter would be taken up in a parliamentary board meeting likely to begin Friday evening. "I have no knowledge about Raje resigning. I don't think she has so far. But the matter will be taken up in the meeting later," Naqvi said. The BJP has convened the parliamentary board meeting to discuss the Raje issue and the causes for the poor performance in the assembly polls in Maharashtra, Haryana and Arunachal Pradesh, Naqvi said.

Pande is the head of the dramatics department at Rajasthan University (RU). MS Windows 7 launch date in India : 22 october 2009

Microsoft confirmed on Tuesday that it is planning for Windows 7 to hit retail shelves and start showing up on new PCs on October 22. To reach that milestone, Microsoft plans to wrap up development of the operating system by the middle or end of next month, Senior Vice President Bill Veghte said in an interview. "The feedback from the release candidate has been good," Veghte said. Microsoft made the near-final release candidate version available last month. Shortly after its release, Microsoft finally confirmed that it was aiming Windows 7 for a holiday 2009 release, something that was widely anticipated, but not confirmed by those in Redmond. The software maker also confirmed, without giving details, that it plans to offer some sort of "technology guarantee" giving those who buy Vista machines close to the Windows 7 launch a free or discounted copy of the new operating system. As with past similar programs, details on pricing will be up to individual computer makers, although Microsoft did say the upgrade program will apply to Vista Home Premium and higher-priced editions (meaning not Windows Vista Basic). The tech guarantee program is not beginning immediately, but Microsoft did raise the possibility it will offer some sort of lower-cost upgrade to those who are already using Windows Vista. Microsoft has said that Windows 7 will come in five different editions in most markets--Starter, Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate. A "Windows 7 Basic" will also be sold in emerging markets, Microsoft said. The software maker has yet to announce pricing for the product.

Udaipur-New Delhi Mewar Express collide, 21 Died

A train crashed into another train's rear carriage reserved for women and disabled passengers, killing 21 people and injuring 17 who remained trapped for hours Wednesday near the Taj Mahal in northern India, police said. Rescuers had to cut open the wrecked compartment to free trapped passengers following the crash near Agra, about 130 miles (210 kilometers) southeast of New Delhi, said Rajesh Bajpai, a railway spokesman. Rescuers recovered 19 bodies during an operation that lasted nearly seven hours, said Rajesh Dikshit, a police spokesman. Two of the 19 injured people died at a hospital, Dikshit told The Associated Press. No foreigners were among the victims, he said. The smashed coach was reserved for women and physically handicapped people, although some other people may have been among the victims, district Magistrate Suresh Chandra Sharma said.
The two trains were heading to New Delhi from southern India. The Mewar Express was stopped at a red signal when the other train rammed it from behind, Suresh Chandra Sharma, the district magistrate, told The Associated Press. "We felt a massive jolt," said Ramesh Charan, a passenger aboard the Mewar Express. "Some people sleeping on upper berths fell to the coach floor by the impact of the collision." Villagers and army soldiers stationed nearby helped police and rail officials in rescuing injured people. Authorities are still trying to determine why the accident happened, rail official Sri Prakash said.

Oil and Natural gas in Jodhpur-Marwar Region

Geologists have found traces of oil and natural gas in Jodhpur-Marwar region of Rajasthan. Researchers have claimed that the sandstone found at the mines in the region date back to about 600 million years, which would put the fossil in the Ediacaran age, just before the Cambrian era that saw an explosion in the evolution of species.'They (plant fossils) are 140 times larger than the normal size of the plant and this is very interesting. Secondly, they are carbon-less i.e. they doesn't have carbon in their brain…these carbon less fossils are very interesting and it is believed that these fossils belong to the algae period between 543-635. Fossils belonging to such period throughout the world are known for rocks which have a potential source of hydrocarbon, specially petroleum and natural gas,' said B. S. Paliwal, a geologist in Jodhpur on Sunday.
The discovery of traces of microbial mats on sandstone was made during a visit of a team of geologists from Lucknow University to the Jodhpur sandstone mines near Sursagar in Marwar region. Geologists also find out some non-carbonaceous structures of algae 140 times bigger in size than the normal fossils.

Rajasthan HC put stay on 5% Gujjar Reservation

The Rajasthan high court has stayed the state government’s decision to provide 5% reservation to Gurjars and three other communities,besides 14% reservation to the Economically Backward Classes (EBCs) as it breached the 50% limit set on quota. A division bench of Chief Justice Jagdish Bhalla and Justice M N Bhandari, on a petition filed by students of Rajasthan University, has ordered a stay on the implementation of the act. The division bench in the order observed, “we have examined the letter in the light of the order of Supreme Court in the light of Indra Sawhney judgement and find that the reservation granted by the government to Gurjar community and EBCs is not in consonance to the settled legal provisions and hence the excess reservation is stayed.” With this, the state government will not be able to provide reservation to Gurjars, Most Backward Communities and EBCs in the recently announced government jobs.
Rajasthan government, through an act had empowered Gurjars and three other communities with 5% reservation besides offering 14% reservation to EBCs. This reservation was over and above 49% reservation shared by OBC (21%), ST (12%) and SC (16%) in the state. Legal expert Abhinav Sharma said that the act has been inviting litigation the moment it was passed. “For effective implementation, the act should be made a part of IX Schedule of the Constitution so that any legal hurdle can be avoided. However, in that case also the Supreme Court, in a ruling, has said that articles in Schedule IX too can be legally reviewed,” he said.

Rajasthan Govt demands 4% on Oil Production by Cairns

The Rajasthan government has slapped a notice on Cairn India demanding the company to pay 4 percent VAT instead of 2 percent CST on the sale of crude oil from the explorer's oil fields at Barmer in the state. The company, on September 25, 2009, has made an online payment of Rs 1.43 to the state government’s commercial tax division against CST over the sale of crude from the oil fields in the month of August. C K Mathew, principal secretary (finance), said that the oil company will have to pay VAT as the point of sale is located in Rajasthan. "We have sent a notice to the company in this regard. Cairn India has entered into an agreement with the state government, which clearly states that the point of sale would be in Rajasthan. "In this case when the state government is entitled to accrue 4 percent VAT on the oil, why the company has paid CST? We will not accept anything less than 4 percent on the sale of oil," he said.
The government has nominated Indian Oil Corp, Hindustan Petroleum Corp and Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals (MRPL) for purchasing crude oil from Rajasthan fields. Cairn, on August 29, started production from its Barmer fields. Oil from the giant Mangala field in the block is transported by trucks and tankers to Kandla on the Gujarat coast for onward shipment to MRPL. The heavy and waxy crude oil is being sold at a discount of about 10-15 percent to the six-monthly average of Brent crude oil. Cairn India had earlier pointed out that the company will pay a royalty of Rs 8 crore per day at peak production. This is over and above the 50 percent profit petroleum that Centre will get from crude sales once production starts. Profit petroleum is the government's share of profit from an oilfield. The company is expected to pump 1,75,000 barrels of oil from the three fields in Rajasthan at peak production. Though it will take two years for the company to reach peak production, the royalty even at initial production levels is expected to run into lakhs.

Quota in Public Distribution System at Rajasthan

The Rajasthan government announced quota in the public distribution system (PDS) for Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Other Backward Classes (OBC). "The quota would be 16 per cent for SC, 12 per cent for ST and 21 per cent for OBC," Rajasthan Food and Civil Supply Minister, Babulal Nagar, told reporters here. However, in the tribal areas of Shahabad and Kishangang, the ration would be allocated to SC and ST at 50 per cent quota, he said. Of the total 23,800 ration shops in the state, 1140 are vacant and 2700 new will be opened soon, Nagar said, adding 3840 of them would be allocated on the basis of reservation. "A new roaster system would be adopted for PDS shops allocation," the minister said. One PDS shop would now be made available for every 500 ration card holders, replacing the previous one for every 700-800 card holders in the area, he added.

The main geographic features of Rajasthan are the Thar Desert and the Aravalli Range, which runs through the state from southwest to northeast, almost from one end to the other, for more than 850 km. Mount Abu is at the southwestern end of the range, separated from the main ranges by the West Banas River, although a series of broken ridges continues into Haryana in the direction of Delhi where it can be seen as outcrops in the form of the Raisina Hill and the ridges farther north. About three-fifths of Rajasthan lies northwest of the Aravallis, leaving two-fifths on the east and south.
The northwestern portion of Rajasthan is generally sandy and dry. Most of the region is covered by the Thar Desert, which extends into adjoining portions of Pakistan. The Aravalli Range does not intercept the moisture-giving southwest monsoon winds off the Arabian Sea,as it lies in a direction parallel to that of the coming monsoon winds, leaving the northwestern region in a rain shadow. The Thar Desert is thinly populated; the town of Bikaner is the largest city in the desert. The Northwestern thorn scrub forests lie in a band around the Thar Desert, between the desert and the Aravallis. This region receives less than 400 mm of rain in an average year. Summer temperatures can exceed 45 °C in the summer months and drop below freezing in the winter. The Godwar, Marwar, and Shekhawati regions lie in the thorn scrub forest zone, along with the city of Jodhpur. The Luni River and its tributaries are the major river system of Godwar and Marwar regions, draining the western slopes of the Aravallis and emptying southwest into the great Rann of Kutch wetland in neighboring Gujarat. This river is saline in the lower reaches and remains potable only up to Balotara in Barmer district. The Ghaggar River, which originates in Haryana, is an intermittent stream that disappears into the sands of the Thar Desert in the northern corner of the state and is seen as a remnant of the primitive Saraswati river.

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Friday said a new direct tax regime with rationalised rates and simplified procedures will take effect 2011 and as the government was open to suggestions to improve the proposals. "We want to present all stakeholders with a tax regime that is simple and broad based, leading to lowering of tax rates, much better tax compliance and reduced litigation," Mukherjee told a seminar on the new Direct Tax Code here. Former minister Subhash Mehriya booked for hitting a police constable

A former Union Minister of State has been booked for allegedly hitting a police constable and abusing an SHO in Rajasthan's Jhunjhunu district. NDA's former Union Minister of State Subhash Mehriya got annoyed when his car was stopped at a check point near Balwantpura area. He snatched constable Vikram Singh's stick and hit him with it, Bhanwar Lal, CO Nawalgarh said. SHO Mukundgarh Nihal Singh, who was standing nearby, rushed to the spot and tried to defend the constable but Mehriya opposed him and hurled abuses at him, he said.
The police were checking cars after a alleged kidnapping incident in nearby Sikar district on Tuesday last, he added. Medical report has confirmed injury on the constable's hand. A case against Mehariya was registered under various sections of IPC, Lal said, adding efforts are on to arrest Mehariya soon.

Cairns Sells First Crude oil from Rajasthan, A new Era Begins. Cairn India, the company that gave the nation its largest oil discovery in more than two decades, has sold the first crude from its prolific Rajasthan fields to the Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals (MRPL). Cairn had on August 29 started production from its Barmer district fields in the Thar desert near the Pakistan border. Oil from the giant Mangala field in the block is transported by trucks and tankers to Kandla on the Gujarat coast for onward shipment to MRPL, which is nominated by the government as one of the buyers of Cairn's crude. A MRPL official said the price would be the average price of Nigerian Bonny Light crude oil for October minus a discount for the quality of the Rajasthan crude. The discount too would be calculated based on the product prices in the month.
MRPL and Indian Oil Corp (IOC) have been allocated 0.20 million tons each of Rajasthan crude in the period up to March 31, 2010, while Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd (HPCL) would offtake 0.30 million tons. Basu said MRPL, a unit of state-run Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC), will begin processing the Rajasthan crude at the 9.69 million-tons-a-year refinery this week itself. Bhagyam, Aishwariya and also other small fields will start production in 2010 and peak output of 1,75,000 bpd is forecast in 2010. Cairn India holds a 70 per cent stake in the RJ-ON-90/1 block, while ONGC holds the balance.

He also agreed that it would be logical for the party to get a new leadership at that juncture. Naidu also hinted that, Advani might not contest the next general elections and said that the change of guard would take place a couple of years before the polls.
Naidu, who is representing Karnataka in the Rajya Sabha, said Advani had been chosen as the Leader of Opposition by party for the 15th Lok Sabha and it was for him to decide when to step down and added that it's for Advani to choose to whom he has to hand over the guard. Infosys to build houses for flood-hit in Karnataka

India's IT bellwether Infosys Technologies Ltd and biotechnology major Biocon Ltd pledged to re-build around 6,000 houses at a cost of Rs.60 crore for the flood-affected people of north Karnataka, Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa said Thursday. 'The IT and biotech industries in the state have come forward to help the state government in re-building houses for the people whose homes collapsed or got washed away in the flood havoc in 12 districts of north Karnataka last week,' Yeddyurappa told reporters here. Infosys chairman and chief mentor N.R. Narayana Murthy and Biocon chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, whom the chief minister met earlier in the day, have assured the government of their full support in rehabilitating the affected people.
Infosys will re-build about 3,000 houses for Rs.30 crore - at Rs.100,000 per house. Similarly, Biocon will re-build another 3,000 houses for the same cost. Global software major Wipro Ltd, which is also headquartered in this tech hub, has also assured Yeddyurappa of re-building houses and will inform the state government in a day or two of its commitment.

Maoist guerrillas Thursday ambushed a police patrol and gunned down at least 18 policemen in a jungle stretch of Maharashtra's Gadchiroli district, officials said.The massacre occurred about a kilometre from Laheri village when the policemen were trekking through thick forests in search of hidden Maoists, an official of the Gadchiroli district police said. Reports received by the police indicate that more than 150 Maoists were involved in the attack, one of the worst in India in recent times. The Maoist attack - the second in less than 18 hours in the same region - came a day after Home Minister P. Chidambaram urged the Maoists to shun violence and go for a dialogue with the government. Additional security forces were rushed to the massacre site. Maharashtra officials said combing operations were on to get the killers who fled into the forests.

A large bomb exploded outside the Indian embassy in central Kabul on Thursday. The Indian embassy in Kabul was the target of yet another terror attack early Thursday morning after a suicide bomber drove a car loaded with explosives into the embassy building, killing 17 people and injuring 80, including three ITBP personnel. Twelve Afghan nationals were killed and three ITBP personnel suffered slight injuries in the blast, but the embassy staff was safe. The Taliban immediately claimed responsibility for the terror attack. The Taliban, toppled as Afghanistan's rulers in 2001 following a U.S.-led invasion, claimed responsibility for the latest blast. After an attack on the Indian embassy in the Afghan capital last year killed 58 people, India said Pakistan's military spy agency, the ISI, was behind most attacks on Indians in Afghanistan as a way of undermining Indian influence.
While New Delhi has been not yet pointed any finger of blame, links will inevitably be drawn to Pakistan. Pakistan has long regarded Afghanistan as a fall-back position in the event of war with India and fears being squeezed between India on its eastern border and a hostile Afghanistan, backed by India, on a western boundary Kabul does not recognize.

JSW Energy to establish 10 power plants in Rajasthan

JSW Energy, a group company of Jindal South West (JSW) group headed by Mr. Sajjan Jindal, has decided to establish 10 power plants with a capacity of 1350 MW in all in Rajasthan's Barmer district. The company stated in a communiqué that the project is being implemented by Raj WestPower Ltd, a 100 per cent subsidiary of JSW energy Ltd, and would be completed in two phases. Under the first phase, the project will generate capacity of 1080 MWs comprising 8 units of 135 MW each, while in the second phase, the capacity will be 270 MWs comprising of 2 units of 135 MWs each. The first phase of project is expected to complete by October 2010, while the second phase will be completed by January 2013.

JSW Energy plans to hit the capital markets in the third week of October to raise around Rs 3000 crore through its IPO. The company will be the third power firm to go for a public issue this year after NHPC Ltd and Adani Power.

Reservation for Youth in Panchayati Raj

The state cabinet on Wednesday gave its green signal for an amendment to the Panchayati Raj Act to provide reservation to youths at village level in the state. Once the new rule is implemented, those in the age group of 21 to 35 will get reservation in all the three tiers of the panchayati raj institutions. Accordingly, in the reserved category of SC/ST/OBC seats, the youth will be given one seat out of three seats. However, this limit would not cross more than two seats in each of these categories. In the general category, one in five seats would be reserved for the youths. However, if the number of seats in the general category are less than five, no reservation could be made for the youth.

The government had to bring in an amendment to Section 19 (a) of the Panchayati Raj Act and it plans to issue an ordinance for giving legal sanctity to the reservation, said a statement. In yet another decision, the government has decided to amend the Cooperatives Act. The amendment would be based on the recommendations of Vaidyanathan committee and the subsequent tripartite agreement among the state, Centre and NABARD. The amendment will help the state government in strengthening the short term co-operative credit societies and credit management with a financial assistance of Rs 450 crore from the Centre.

"Her resignation can wait.....The people are preoccupied with relief and rehabilitation (of flood-affected people from Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka). Secondly, there are assembly elections" (in Maharashtra, Haryana and Arunachal Pradesh), Naidu said. When told that these had nothing to do with Raje stepping down from her post, he did not give a direct reply. "This is not an issue. We are pre-occupied with elections....and issues of public interest. When we have time we can discuss it....The BJP is still there...don't worry. We will discuss it," he said, adding "we are now concerned with people who are suffering. That is the main issue."
Raje had earlier said she was a disciplined member of the party. Her delay in resigining had led party chief Rajnath Singh to say that no deadline had been fixed for her to step down. Though Raje has demonstrated that she has the support of a majority of BJP MLAs in Rajasthan assembly, the central leadership asked her to resign holding her responsible for the party's debacle in Lok Sabha and state assembly polls. She had however been defiant and sent MLAs supporting her to Delhi to ask the central leadership to revoke the order asking her to resign. When she refused to relent, Naidu was appointed as the pointsman to deal with the issue and look into her demands. Though she came to Delhi when Naidu called her to discuss the matter, she sent in a word through her son and MP Dushyant Singh that she is unwell and cannot meet. Last week, she had called on senior leader L K Advani to discuss the matter. Now, BJP has decided to wait till the assembly elections in Maharashtra, Haryana and Arunachal Pradesh are over.

IIT Delhi Faculty accepts sixth Pay Commission

After government's assurance that the pay structure norms could be relaxed by IITs, the IIT Delhi Faculty Forum has decided to accept the 6th Pay Commission package. "We have been given a lot of assurance by the government. We expect that the assurances will be implemented. We are asking our faculty to accept the new package," Prof S S Murthy, president of IIT Delhi Faculty Forum, said. The IIT Delhi Faculty Forum met here for the last two days and passed a resolution today for accepting the new package. However, the All India IIT Faculty Federation president Prof M Thenmozhi said the faculty forum of a few other IITs are waiting for some more time till the clear picture emerges about how the IITs are going to implement the promises made by the government.
The IIT Faculty Federation had gone on a day-long fast on September 24 to protest certain "anomalies" in the pay structure. The faculty was protesting 40 per cent cap on promotion of professors to senior grade and provision of contractual appointment at entry level.

Centre alloted 209 Crore for Flood in AP and Karnataka

Central Govt has released Rs 209.1 crore from the Calamity Relief Fund to flood-hit Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka to tackle the situation even over two dozen villages in Krishna and Guntur districts of Andhra Pradesh continue to face flood fury. Andhra Pradesh will receive Rs 156.84 crore while Karnataka will get Rs 52.26 crore, an official release said. The funds are the second instalment of the Central share of Calamity Relief Fund for the year 2009-10. The amount is usually released in December, but the payment has been advanced in view of the grim situation in the two states.
The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrashekhar on Tuesday to review the flood situation in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The Resident Commissioners of both the states, who attended the meeting appreciated the prompt and quick response by the Centre in providing logistic support for rescue and relief operations.

Indian born scientist gets Nobel Prize in Chemistry

In a rare honor for Indian scientific community, Indian-born American scientist Venkatraman Ramakrishnan was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the year 2009. Ramakrishnan and two other scientists won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their "studies of the structure and function of the ribosomes". The two other scientists, who shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry with V Ramakrishnan are Thomas E Steitz (US) and Ada E Yonath (Israel). They all are working with MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology at Cambridge. Venkatraman Ramakrishnan was born in 1952 at Chidambaram in Tamil Nadu. He did B.Sc. in Physics from Baroda University in 1971 and his Ph.D. in Physics from Ohio University in 1976.
They were awarded for their study of one of life's core processes: the ribosome's translation of DNA information into life. Ribosomes produce proteins, which in turn control the chemistry in all living organisms. The three scientists were awarded for having showed what the ribosome looks like and how it functions at the atomic level. All three have used a method called X-ray crystallography to map the position for each and every one of the hundreds of thousands of atoms that make up the ribosome.

Rajasthan Govt may involve Private players in Water supply

In an effort to improve basic infrastructure and provide quality services to people, the state government is planning to involve private players in key areas like drinking water supply, roads, health and education. Soon, Udaipur will become the first city in the state where the drinking water supply system will be privatised. Principal advisor to Planning Commission, Gajendra Haldia, who met senior officials of state government here, said the Commission is giving final touches to a proposal for private participation in social sectors like health and education. Nearly 2,500 new schools under PPP model are in the pipeline in the country as government plans to involve private players for the management of schools.

Student Protest and Lathicharge at Subodh College Jaipur

The police on Monday used force to disperse a group of students who forcibly tried to enter a private college on Tonk Road, demanding action against another group involved in beating of a junior student recently. The scuffle started at 10 am when 100-odd students gathered at the gate of Subodh College led by NSUI leader Mukesh Bhakar raising slogans against the college administration. The situation went out of control when students started damaging the college property. In a bid to disperse the students creating ruckus on the road, the police swung into action. It is reported that atleast one student was injured and half-a-dozen others received minor injuries in clash with police. Furious over police move, the students then disrupted the traffic for more than 30 minutes and caused inconvenience to thousands of daily commuters. “For 30 minutes panic prevailed on the road as students and commuters were running for shelter,” said police officer.
In Subodh College, more than 2,000 students, including girls were present when the protesters started the agitation. “To avoid any confrontation, we suspended the classes for rest of the day,” said KB Sharma, principal, Subodh College. Police arrested around 14 students on charges of disrupting traffic and damaging college property. The arrested students were taken to three different police stations namely Muhana, Shipra Path and Sanganer. Later in the evening, half of them were released.

Nobel Medicine Prize for research into ageing

Australian-American researcher Elizabeth Blackburn and Carol Greider and Jack Szostak of the United States won the Nobel Medicine Prize on Monday for identifying a key molecular switch in cellular ageing. The trio were honoured for the discovery of how chromosomes are protected by telomeres and the role of an enzyme called telomerase in maintaining or stripping away this vital shield. "The award of the Nobel Prize recognises the discovery of a fundamental mechanism in the cell, a discovery that has stimulated the development of new therapeutic strategies," the Nobel jury said.
The three told Swedish Radio they were overjoyed by the news. Blackburn said she knew when they made their discovery that they were on to something big. Many experts initially speculated that ageing could be pinned to telomere shortening, but the process has emerged as something that encompasses different factors, as well as telomeres. In addition, high telomerase also helps cancer, enabling its cells to replicate endlessly and achieve what scientists call "cellular immortality." Finding ways of blocking this machinery through "telomerase inhibitors" is one of the most eagerly explored areas of cancer research.

Govt to spend 15000 Crore to clean Ganga

After investing almost Rs 960 crore in the past 22 years, the Centre has now decided to spend an additional Rs 15,000 crore to make the Ganga river pollution free within the next ten years. "No untreated industrial effluent and municipal sewage will be allowed to flow in the river after 2020," Union Minister Jairam Ramesh told reporters here after the first meeting of the newly formed National Ganga River Basin Authority which was chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
He pointed out that currently there is a sewage treatment capacity of only about 1000 mld (million litres per day) against 3000 mld sewage being generated in the towns along Ganga. "An estimated investment of Rs 15,000 crores over next ten years will be required to create the necessary treatment and sewerage infrastructure," Ramesh said.

Former BJP minister Ujla Arora passes away

BJP veteran and a former minister Ujla Arora today died at the Sawai Man Singh Hospital at 4:15 PM here after a prolonged illness, family sources said. She was over 75 years old. Arora, who had strong RSS roots, served as an MLA five times from Jaipur(Gramin) since 1977 and was a minister of state in the then Shekhawat government. She is survived by three sons and two daughters.
Condoling her death, state BJP President Arun Chaturvedi said in her demise the party has lost a seasoned leader who worked at the grassroots.

Rajasthan International Folk Festival on full Swing

Traditional folk music from the remote villages of Rajasthan is finding high-profile voices to carry it mainstream. A five-day Rajasthan International Folk Festival (RIFF), which began Oct 1 at the sprawling Mehrangarh Fort, is promoting 'unheard of music from the desert villages that is dying a slow death due to lack of patronage and popularity'. On Saturday, the country's leading exponent of classical Rajasthani sarangi and vocal music, Ustad Sultan Khan, jumped the 'class divide between classical and folk music' to throw his lot with marginalised ethnic folk musicians of Marwar in a rare 'folk-meets classical' concert Maru Tarang at the RIFF. Maru Tarang featured Sultan Khan, his son Sabir Khan and Sultan's brother Hamid Khan and leading Manganiyar Sindhi sarangi maestro Lakha Khan and vocalist Anwar Khan. The group sang popular Rajasthani wedding and festival numbers, 'sufi' 'bhajans' and 'rajwari maand' (in praise of the maharaja) in both classical and the traditional folk styles, accompanied by the sarangi.
Mumbai-based Sufi and folk vocalist Rekha Bharadwaj, wife of filmmaker Vishal Bharadwaj, is also collaborating with female folk musicians in the state. In a concert Oct 2, 'Maand and More', Rekha pitted her powerful contralto and earthy style of music with the state's living Maand and Bhopi (folk styles) legends, Bhanwari Devi Bhopi and Rehana Mirza singing Rajwari Maand from Udaipur and Sufi Zikr (the whirling chant 'la illaha il Allah') in jugalbandi with the duo. 'This is my first collaboration with folk musicians from Rajasthan. Though our styles are different, we sing of the same emotions - love, god and valour. Essentially, it is a bonding of feminine music from the state,' Rekha Bharadwaj told IANS. Rekha, who met Bhanwari Devi and Rehana Mirza in June this year for the first time felt she should have spent more time with them. 'I had to know their lifestyles and soil to get deeper into their music. I want to take them to Bollywood, if possible,' Rekha said. Most of the instruments, barring the sarangi, are on the verge of extinction.

Heavy rains in Rajasthan

Heavy rains lashed most parts of Rajasthan today providing people respite from hot and humid weather conditions, a Met official said. Due to low pressure over southern region, including Karnataka and north Maharasthra, the monsoon will continue for next two days, the official said. The temperature dipped by five to ten degrees at almost all places during last 24 hours due to moderate to heavy downpour, he said. Dholpur and Sarmathura recorded the rainfall of 8 cms, followed by Baran 6 cms, Bari and Nandauti 5 cms each. Jaipur recorded intermittent showers of 0.5 mm. Rajasthan may expect some more rain in next 1-2 days.
Overnight rains lashed many parts of Rajasthan with Chouth Ka Barwarda in Sawai Madhopur district recording maximum rainfall of 6 cm, the Met office said here on Sunday. Pt Kalyan Dutt Sharma passed away

Renowned Astrology scholar and President Award winner Pundit Kalyan Dutt Sharma who has to his credit building five stone observatories at different places including Jaipur, passed away here last night. He was 90. He is survived by his only daughter. Pundit Sharma who presently was associated with Lal Bahadur Shastri Sanskrit University New Delhi, was not keeping well and was almost bed ridden for past several months. He was cremated at the Shipra Path cremation ground in Mansarovar today. A former teacher in Maharaja Sanskrit College here, Mr Sharma worked for several years as Incharge of the Jantar Mantar Stone Observatory constructed by founder of Jaipur Maharaja Sawai Jaisingh in the City Palace area here.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Friday said that despite efforts there was a deterioration in the rural administration system and villagers' voice was being quietened. She expressed serious concern over increasing bureaucratic activism in the Panchayati Raj. Addressing at a rally organised here to mark the Panchayati Raj system’s golden jubilee, Sonia Gandhi blamed State Governments of not holding local body or Panchayat elections on time for political gains. "Several State governments did not conduct timely elections for local bodies and Panchayats just for gaining political mileage, which led to deterioration of Panchayati Raj system rendering them helpless. The role of the administration became increasingly important and the people''s voice started getting muzzled," Sonia said here this afternoon marking the golden jubilee of the launch of the Panchayti Raj programme. Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, Union Minister C P Joshi and State cabinet Ministers also attended the function.
On this occasion, Sonia mentioned about former Prime Minister and her husband Rajiv Gandhi’s contribution to enact the Panchayati Raj Act. UN release Mahatma Gandhi stamp

Marking the International Day of Non-Violence, the United Nations released a Mahatma Gandhi stamp on the occasion of his 140th birth anniversary. The United Nations Postal Administration released the $1 stamp designed by Miami-based artist Ferdie Pacheco. The stamp shows the Father of the Nation in red, blue and gold. Envelopes marked with the stamp and the U.N. seal are on sale. Several U.N. envoys present at a function, organised by the Indian Mission, reiterated the impact of the Mahatma’s life.“In many ways, Mahatma Gandhi pre-visioned the United Nations. Much of the work we do in the area of human rights owes its genesis in the struggle against racial discrimination, which he focused on,” said Ambassador to the U.N. Hardeep Singh Puri.
President of the General Assembly Ali Abdussalam Treki stressed upon Gandhiji’s commitment to communal harmony between the Muslims and the non-Muslims. Paying tributes to Gandhiji, United States Permanent Representative to the U.N., Susan Rice, said, “Gandhi had influenced millions of Americans. Gandhi believed that physical force could be turned aside by moral forces.” Mr. Puri and Ms. Rice spoke of the historic trip that civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., made to India in 1959 to see the country of the Mahatma. On his return, Dr. King wrote, “It was wonderful to be in Gandhi’s land.” This year, on the 50th anniversary of the journey, the U.S. sponsored Martin Luther King III’s visit to retrace the steps of his father and mother. NIMS Diploma cource students and future !!!

The unrecognized courses run by the educational institutions in the state continue to mar the prospects of students vying for a better future. More then 15 students, who have successfully cleared their diploma course in pharmacy from NIMS University last year, are crying foul now. They have not received a license from the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) required for a decent job. The reason is that their diploma certificates are not recognized by the council. “A decent job has become a distant dream for us. Even I can’t open a medical store for my livelihood,” said Padam Singh, a student struggling for a job. These students alleged that the university kept them in the dark regarding its recognition.
The existing students of pharmacy degree course have also opened a front against the university authorities. They alleged its administration of running the course without the approval of PCI. It is learn that the university introduced the course in 2006-07. But it had not approached the council for approval till April 2009, as per the PCI records. The final-year students of pharmacy now realize that if the university fails to get the recognition this year, their fate will be similar to those of the diploma holders. These students are staging an indefinite demonstration near Press Club asking the technical education minister to intervene in the matter.
However, university’s registrar K P Singh refuted the charges. “The inspection team is expected to arrive this month. We have fulfilled all the pre-requisites for the recognition,” he claimed and added that the course in registered with AICTE.

Countdown began for Commonwealth Games 2010

A year-long countdown began on Saturday for the 19th Commonwealth Games, the biggest sporting extravaganza hosted by India, that the govt says will showcase its abilities even as critics say the preparations are not up to the mark and may fall short of international expectations. The 12-day event will open 3rd Oct, 2010 at the 75,000-capacity Jawaharal Nehru Stadium in the heart of New Delhi. Over 5,000 athletes from 53 countries that were once part of the British empire will compete in 17 disciplines. The event is the biggest India will host since the Asian Games in 1982 that saw 4,595 athletes from 33 nations take part in 21 events. Amid hiccups and criticism, the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee of India is confident that the grand show will go like clockwork. "Let me tell you that 80 percent of the work at all the venues will be completed before 31st December, except cycling and rugby venues where work started a bit late. But those two will also be completed in time for the competition," Committee Secretary General Lalit Bhanot said.
Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit, for whom the games are a matter of personal prestige, admits to spending sleepless nights but is equally sure that the event will go off without a hitch. "We will be ready on time," she has declared. But the going hasn't been exactly smooth. Last month, Commonwealth Games Federation president Michael Fennel shot off an angry letter to Indian Olympic Association (IOA) chief Suresh Kalmadi demanding a meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to ensure that work on various projects was expedited. "With only a year to run until the games, I feel I must personally brief the prime minister on the lack of preparations and to seek his input in developing an appropriate recovery plan," Fennel said. Fennel's outburst has spurred the Indian authorities to pledge that all the facilities will be ready on time. Security is a major issue but the home ministry has ruled out any threat to the Games. "To the best of our knowledge, there is no specific threat to the Commonwealth Games," Home Secretary G.K. Pillai said. India has briefed security professionals and representatives from 26 Commonwealth countries including Australia, Britain, Canada, New Zealand, Kenya, Nigeria and Singapore about security and traffic related arrangements to be put in place during the games. The delegations were also shown around the venues of the games.

Bisalpur water pipeline break in Jaipur

Chaos prevailed near OTS Circle on JLN Marg on Saturday evening as the Bisalpur pipeline leaked with lakhs of litres of water gushing out of the damaged pipe. According to eyewitnesses, two people got tripped in the sudden flow of water but rescued by policemen and officials. According to sources, over 70 lakh litres of water got wasted within half an hour of the incident after which PHED officials managed to close down the supply. Though police diverted the traffic, a number of vehicles and people were left stranded. Only after the water supply was stopped the situation returned to normal. Initial reports say that the water poured out of a damaged joint in the pipeline.

Tiger Woods has become the first athlete to surpass $1 billion in career earnings, the Forbes magazine estimates that golf's top-ranked player crested the plateau when he earned $10 million for winning the FedEx Cup on Sunday. Forbes reported on its Web site on Tuesday that Woods entered 2009 having earned $895 million since he joined the PGA Tour in 1996. Prize money, appearance fees, endorsement fees, bonuses and his golf course design business were calculated to have pushed him over $1 billion. The magazine says former NBA great Michael Jordan and former Formula One driver Michael Schumacher, at $800 million and $700 million, respectively, are Woods' closest competition in career earnings.

International Year of Tiger - 2010

India always on the receiving end of Tiger conservation and protection, has on Saturday announced its decision to draw international attention on the issue by launching 2010 as the “Year of the Tigers’’. The next year on Valentine's Day, the campaign from Jim Corbett National Park will kick off, according to Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh. India's offer in this regard was accepted at a meeting held at the prestigious Smithsonian Institute, which was attended by other agencies including the World Bank. "Today India made the offer for launching the Year of the Tiger internationally on February 14, 2010 at Corbett," Ramesh said, adding the Year of Tiger would end in November 2010 with another tiger consultation in Ranthambore National Park.
Ramesh in an interaction with media after the meeting told, "Both these events would showcase what India is doing in the field of tiger conservation." The Russians are hosting the World Tiger Summit in Vladivostok in September 2010. Noting that all these were meant to establish India's leadership, Ramesh said 60 per cent of the tigers in the wild in the world are in India.
