Cairn India has big plan in Barmer Oil field of Rajasthan

Cairn India, a subsidiary of Vedanta Resources, is planning to commercialise gas production from its Barmer basin in Rajasthan. The basin under Cairn India, which comprises three main oil fields — Mangala, Bhagyam and Aishwarya and smaller oil and gas fields of Saraswati, Raageshwari, etc — currently produces 175,000 barrel of oil per day (bopd) commercially. The Raageshwari fields produce some marginal gas, which is being used for internal purposes. The firm plans to increase the quantum of this production to sell it commercially. "This year has been very exciting for Cairn India as we have discovered gas in the Rajasthan block and efforts will be made to bring that into production as quickly as possible. The high exploration potential of the block is evident from the fact that more than 100 prospects and leads have been identified, and we have pegged the total oil production potential to 3,00,000 bpd, for which we hope to get speedy approvals from the government," said Navin Agarwal, chairman, Cairn India. "We are producing small quantities of gas in Barmer, but that's largely used for our internal consumption. These new gas discoveries are over and above that," added P Elango, interim CEO, Cairn India. These officials were speaking on the sidelines of Cairn India's sixth annual general meeting in Mumbai .
At the AGM, the company said it plans to spend $2 billion over the next two years; of this, $600 million would be spent towards exploration in Rajasthan. "The resource base for the block is now estimated to be 7.3 billion barrels of oil equivalent in-place - an increase of over 11%," said Agarwal.

Neil Armstrong passes away

Former United States astronaut, and global icon Neil Armstrong, the first person to set foot on the moon, passed away at the age of 82, on Saturday. Armstrong underwent a heart-bypass surgery earlier this month, just two days after his birthday on 5th August, to relieve blocked coronary arteries. As commander of the Apollo 11 mission, Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the moon on July 20, 1969. As he stepped on the moon's dusty surface, Armstrong said: "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind." The Apollo 11 moon mission turned out to be Armstrong's last space flight. The following year he was appointed to a desk job, being named NASA's deputy associate administrator for aeronautics in the office of advanced research and technology.
He left NASA a year later to become a professor of engineering at the University of Cincinnati. The former astronaut lived in the Cincinnati area with his wife, Carol. Armstrong was born 5th August, 1930, on a farm near Wapakoneta in western Ohio. He took his first airplane ride at age 6 and developed a fascination with aviation that prompted him to build model airplanes and conduct experiments in a homemade wind tunnel. As a boy, he worked at a pharmacy and took flying lessons. He was licensed to fly at 16, before he got his driver's license.

The 66th Independence Day was celebrated on Wednesday with gaiety and with full enthusiasm amid tight security deployment all over the states. PM Manmohan Singh has said the recent blasts in Pune were a reminder that more needed to be done to improve internal security although success has been witnessed on this front in many areas. In his address to the nation on 66th Independence Day on Wednesday, he said Naxalism was still a serious problem and that schemes have been initiated in areas affected by the menace. Singh also noted that people participated in large numbers in the Panchayat elections in Jammu and Kashmir. Noting that there has been a reduction in violence in the north eastern states, Singh said the government was engaged in dialogue with many groups there so that they can join the mainstream of development. "We have initiated new schemes of development in areas affected by Naxal violence to ensure that the grievances of the people residing there, especially our brothers and sisters belonging to Scheduled Tribes, can be removed and their lot can be improved," he said.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Independence Day Wednesday said his government is committed to the welfare of people in every section of the society. "My government's efforts are to provide a transparent and responsive government," said Gehlot while unfurling the national flag at the state-level ceremony in Jaipur's Sawai Man Singh Stadium here on the occasion of the 66th Independence Day. "We have, from today, launched a free veterinary medicine scheme in the state," Gehlot said while highlighting various government schemes.

Rajasthan CM Gehlot to Meet Veerapa Moily on Powergrid issue

Rajasthan Chief Minister(CM) Ashok Gehlot to Meet Power Minister Veerapa Moily along with seven other  northern states to discuss on the issues they face in electricity transmission and distribution. Moily had last week called a meeting of Chief Ministers of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, J&K, Rajasthan and Delhi after the country witnessed one of the worst-ever power crises on last Tuesday that hit lives of over 60 crore people. "Some of the states have confirmed their participation while some are yet to confirm," a Power Ministry official said. Northern, Eastern and North-Eastern grids had collapsed on Tuesday afternoon hitting power supply to 21 states.
The states affected included Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Sikkim, Meghalaya, Manipur and Assam, besides Union Territory of Chandigarh. The reason for grid failure is, however, yet to be ascertained. These three grids collapsed within 24 hours of the Northern Grid getting restored following a failure on Monday. Meanwhile, within days of assuming charge, Power Min Veerappa Moily has restructured the expert panel appointed by his predecessor Sushilkumar Shinde to look into the massive failure of power transmission grids. The members of the panel headed by Central Electricity Authority (CEA) chairman A S Bakshi has been expanded to seven people, including outside experts, sources said. The panel, which originally had three members, was set up by Shinde in the wake of Northern Grid failure on 30th July that impacted over 30 crore people. Now, four more members including Professor S C Srivastava from IIT Kanpur, Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission member A Velayutham and CEA member K K Agrawal are part of the panel, sources said. The two others members of the originally-constituted committee -- Power Grid Corp chairman and managing director R N Nayak and Power System Operation Corp Chief Executive Officer S K Soonee -- would continue to be part of the panel. Bakshi would continue to be chairman of the committee, that is expected to submit its report in a fortnight.

Saina Nehwal wins bronze Medal in London Olympics

Ace shuttler Saina Nehwal earned India its third medal at the London Games, clinching a bronze under fortuitous circumstances as her opponent and world number two Xin Wang of China conceded the third-place play off match due to a knee injury after winning the first game. The fourth seeded Indian had saved four game points in a dramatic fightback and was 18-20 when left-handed Xin twisted her knee while going for an acrobatic smash from the baseline and took on-court treatment for the injury.
However, she was back on the court after wrapping her left knee in bandage and immediately attacked Saina's serve to win the point and the game to be 1-0 up. But after winning the first point in the second game, Xin could not continue and was wincing in pain before shaking hands with Saina to concede the match and the bronze medal to the 22-year-old Indian ace. Saina thus became the first Indian badminton player to win a medal at the Olympic Games.

Rajasthan plans Cloud-Seeding for artificial rain

Rajasthan is planning for Cloud-Seeding for artificial rain after Monsoon below normal this year and five district of western rajasthan already declared drought affected this week by Rajasthan Govt. India Meteorological Department(IMD) has forecast a 23% deficient monsoon this year. Hindustan Zinc, a Vedanta Resources' subsidiary and the world's largest manufacturer of zinc, has started cloud-seeding experiments in Rajasthan as per report from English daily Times of India(ToI) and Hindi daily Rajasthan Patrika. As per report Hindustan zinc has got all clrearance for its experiment for Cloud-Seeding and waiting for proper time to spray Sodium Chloride(Salt) used for Cloud-Cladding.
"We are exploring the possibility of cloud-seeding in Bhilwara, Rajsamand and Chittorgarh districts of Rajasthan. The state has seen scarce rainfall and we hope our experiments yield rains in the state," said Pavan Kaushik, head, corporate communication, Hindustan Zinc. The company has its mining and melting operation in Bhilwara, Rajsamand, Udaipur and Chittorgarh districts. Bangalore-based Agni Aero Sports, which worked with Andhra Pradesh (2004-2009) and Karnataka (2003-04) governments to induce artificial rains, is carrying out similar experiments in Rajasthan. Vedanta group is first organization to conduct this test at own cost without govt. aids. Total cost for cloud seeding is expected from 15 to 20 Crore.
What is Cloud Seeding: Cloud seeding, a form of intentional weather modification, is the attempt to change the amount or type of precipitation that falls from clouds, by dispersing substances into the air that serve as cloud condensation or ice nuclei, which alter the microphysical processes within the cloud. The usual intent is to increase precipitation (rain or snow), but hail and fog suppression are also widely practiced in airports. The Largest cloud seeding system in the world is that of the People's Republic of China, which believes that it increases the amount of rain over several increasingly arid regions, including its capital city, Beijing, by firing silver iodide rockets into the sky where rain is desired. Other major users are America, Euroian countries and Australia.

Former RSS chief KS Sudarshan missing from Mysore

Former RSS chief KS Sudarshan has gone missing in Mysore. Sudarshan had gone for a morning walk at 5 am on Friday morning and has not yet returned. The 81-year-old former RSS leader was staying at his brother's place in Nazarabad, Mysore. His brother has filed a complaint with the Mysore Police. Police have launched a hunt for Sudarshan.
A missing complaint has been lodged with the police who have launched a search operation for the former RSS chief. Reports claim that Sudarshan was staying at his brother's home in Mysore. RSS activists are also searching for Sudarshan. 81-year-old Sudarshan, who is believed to be suffering from dementia, had lost his way and was later found taking rest under a tree after being exhausted on the road leading to Lalith Mahal helipad, RSS and police sources said. Earlier, the complaint by his brother Ramesh, with whom he was staying for the past three days, created a scare, with police and RSS volunteers launching a vigorous search for him.

Right to Hearing Act implemented in Rajasthan

Rajasthan became the first state in the country to implement the 'Right To Hearing Act', which ensures time-bound hearing and disposal of complaints related to governance. Rajasthan is the first state in the country to introduce such an Act and we would like to ensure that everybody knows about the details of the Act," Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said at a news conference in his office here. "The government is working on a theme to provide sensitive, transparent and responsible governance and the 'Right to Hearing act' is another step in this direction," he said. Gehlot said that under the Act, right of hearing will be provided to people on complaint filed related to governance within stipulated time limits. "Provision of penalty from Rs 500 to 5,000 has been made in the Act," he said.
The Guaranteed Delivery of Public Services Act at present is covering 153 services of 18 departments and 56,33,400 cases out of total 57,06,785 have been disposed off so far, he said. Gehlot also called upon social activists and NGOs to spread awareness about the issue so that maximum people can take advantage of the Act. He expressed hope that the new Act would help in reducing number of public grievances at levels of the chief minister and ministers.

Shahrukh Khan fined Rs.100 for Public Smoking

Bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan, charged with smoking in public during an IPL match, today escaped with a paltry fine of Rs 100, less than the cost of his cigarette box, after having pleaded guilty before a court here. Disposing of the matter, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate S C Godara, Jaipur City, allowed Khan to deposit the fine through his counsel. Khan, co-owner of Kolkata Knight Riders, was summoned by the court in May on a complaint that he was seen smoking on April 8 during a match between his team and Rajasthan Royals at Sawi Man Singh Stadium. The court asked the actor to pay Rs 100 as fine. Soon after the court's judgement, Shahrukh's counsel claimed that his client was ready to pay the fine.
Nodding to the counsel's request, the court exempted the actor from personal appearance and allowed him to pay the amount through his counsel. Quite interestingly, the amount of fine i.e. Rs 100 must be less than the cost of his cigarette box. Anand Singh, who runs the Jaipur Cricket Academy - a private club, had filed the petition against the court complaining about his act of smoking in public during an IPL match between Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Apr 8. The petitioner filed the case against SRK under section 5 read with 11 of Rajasthan Prohibition of Smoking Act, 2000, which prohibits smoking at a public places.

Drought declared in Jodhpur, Nagaur, Barmer, Bikaner and Jaisalmer Districts

Rajasthan Government has declared drought in Jodhpur, Nagaur, Barmer, Bikaner and Jaisalmer districts on Wednesday. The five districts have been worst-hit by deficit rain and will remain in the status of ‘droughtaffected’ from August 1 to July 31 next year. Chief minister Ashok Gehlot instructed the officials to mention everything in detail in the letters that will be presented to Centre. He also asked them to take the assessment exercise of losses seriously. To gauge the situation in the state, Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar will visit Jaipur on August 3.
Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot said “The five districts received no rain. There will be huge scarcity of water. The water level in dams and other resources has been down by 65%. We have to make arrangements for proper supply of drinking water. Apart from that, we will have to ensure the proper supply of electricity and fodder”. A special task force under the chairmanship of principal secretary to CM and departmental heads of animal husbandry and health department has also been formed. They will keep a tab on the ongoing relief work concerned to their respective departments. Similarly, the government will urge the Centre to increase the number of work days from 100 to 200 under NREGS.

Team Anna to end Fast, Enter Politics

Anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare hinted he was open to the idea of his movement entering politics. The announcement came after his latest public fast failed to lead to negotiations with the government on the Lokpal Bill, which is still pending parliamentary approval. Anna Hazare and several of his close associates announced their ongoing hunger strike will end Friday afternoon. The latest round of indefinite fast at Jantar Mantar in the heart of national capital had made some points amply clear. The hunger strike was not going to bring in a Lokpal or for that matter an SIT against corrupt ministers despite some of the fasting members being close to being hospitalised without the fast yielding any result. Team Anna today decided to end its indefinite fast tomorrow and take a plunge into politics. "It is another two years to go to polls in 2014. We have to go to people throughout the country in the next one-and- half years".
"Why waste time on fasts? Tomorrow at 5 pm, all fast will end," Hazare told supporters at Jantar Mantar at the end of an address in which he enunciated the civil society's approach to providing a political alternative to the current system. However, questions still remained as to what Team Anna would do regarding the political alternative and whether they would launch a party themselves.

Raj Travels' owner Lalit Sheth on Wednesday allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the Bandra Worli Sea Link bridge in central Mumbai, police said. According to police, Sheth asked his driver to stop the car on the bridge and told him to drive the vehicle ahead slowly, saying he would like to take a walk on the bridge.  Reportedly, Seth had a debt of around Rs 5 crore which he had to pay to SBI. Police sources also said that when Sheth failed to pay dues of another other two banks—HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank, an official liquidator was appointed.
Seth also faced arbitration proceedings with respect to complaints filed by Tata Motors and Tata Finance involving Rs 2 crore and surrender of seven vehicles from Raj Travels. Tatas had moved a petition in the high court demanding his arrest in this concern, which the court could have looked into it this month. Lalit Sheth allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the Bandra Worli Sea Link bridge in central Mumbai on Wednesday. "56-year-old Sheth, who owns Raj Travels, jumped from the sea link bridge this afternoon, leaving a suicide note," Deputy Police Commissioner Dhananjay Kulkarni told reporters.
