Indian economy grew by a significant 7.9 per cent in the second quarter of this fiscal, up from 6.1 per cent in the previous quarter, essentially due to a good showing by the industry and the services sector. The growth compares favourably to 7.7 per cent recorded in the July-September quarter in the previous year. The economy rose by 7 per cent in the first half ending September 30 of the current fiscal on the back of stimulus packages and revival of domestic demand, giving hopes that final figures for the year could be much higher. The government, including Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, the Reserve Bank and the Planning Commission had predicted a growth of about 6-7 per cent, while global agencies and analysts forecast it to be even lower.Analysts were expecting a growth rate of 6.1-6.6 per cent in the second quarter. The economic growth of close to eight per cent in the second quarter is also remarkable in the context of just 0.9 per cent expansion in farm production due to a weak monsoon and continued contraction in exports due to slackening demand overseas. However, the manufacturing sector grew by 9.2 per cent in the July-September period compared to 5.1 per cent in the corresponding period of last fiscal and mining and quarrying by 9.5 per cent versus 3.7 per cent recorded in FY09. Community, social and personal services expanded by double digit at 12.7 per cent against nine per cent.

In her book titled "To The Last Bullet", Vinita has questioned why Maria, who took charge of police control room during the 59-hour siege, had denied knowledge of how Ashok, Additional Police Commissioner (East), went to Cama Hospital. The book was released on Tuesday by noted social activist Aruna Roy and former Mumbai Police commissioner Julio Rebeiro in Mumbai. According to wireless excerpts between the control room and the eastern region, Vinita, who accessed the conversations using RTI Act, said Maria had asked Ashok to go to Cama hospital as firing was on by the terrorists.The martyred IPS officer's widow also claimed that her husband Ashok Kamte had been directed by Police Commissioner Hasan Gafoor (currently DG-housing) to head towards Trident Hotel, another place attacked by terrorists. 50 Employees hospitalised at Kaiga nuclear plant
About 50 workers at the Kaiga Nuclear Power Plant in Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka have been hospitalised after suffering radiation poisioning. Reports said the employees were taken ill after drinking contaminated water in the plant. The employees working in the first maintenance unit of the plant were treated for increasing level of tritium after they drank water from a water cooler in the operating area on November 24, official sources said on condition of anonymity. Tritium, also known as Hydrogen-3, is used in research, fusion reactors and neutron generators. Urine examination of the employees in the unit is done everyday as a matter of routine and during such a test four days ago it was found that the tritium level was more than the normal level. They were taken to the plant hospital in Mallapur and treated immediately, the sources said. “The contents of the water in the cooler are being investigated,” the sources said.

Online CAT exam disrupted on servers crash
The first computer-bases CAT Exam for admission to IIMs on Saturday got off to a troubled start with the server crashing in some centres, forcing the authorities to reschedule the examination for those affected. Nearly 2.41 lakh students across the country would take the exam for getting entry into seven IIMs and other B-schools in 105 centres in 32 cities in the next 10 days. "It has certainly not been cancelled in any of the test centres," Soumitra Roy, Managing Director, India, Prometric, the agency conducting the test, said. "As a result of isolated technical issues some candidates are being rescheduled and provided with a new appointment via email and SMS," Roy said.
He said that thousands of tests were successfully delivered in hundreds of test centres throughout the country. "To accommodate the maximum number of candidates, Prometric and IIMs delayed the start of the morning session by about half an hour," he said. Students complained of glitches in certain centres in Bangalore, Chennai, Pune, Delhi, Mumbai , Kolkata and Bhopal.

Congress wins Civic election in Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner and Kota
The ruling Congress in Rajasthan notched up further victories in the state on Thursday, sweeping the civic body elections. The party even wrested mayoral posts from the BJP’s traditional bastions of Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner and Kota. After the counting ended on Thursday for civic bodies and for the first time their heads as well, the Congress candidates won as either presidents or chairpersons in 25 other civic bodies. While the BJP managed 10, the BSP and an Independent managed one victory each. The Congress is set to form the boards in 25 bodies, the BJP in 16 and Independents in the remaining.

Rajasthan's 220 MW unit of Atomic Power generation started
The newly installed 220 MW unit of the Rajasthan Atomic Power Plant(RAPP) was synchronised for power generation today. Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Anil Kakodkar, Atomic Energy Corporation Chairman-cum-Managing Director SK Jain and RAPP Site Director CP Jhamb were present on the occasion.
This is the fifth 220 MW power unit at the RAPP and will be used as fuel, imported Uranium which has been procured under the Indo-US Nuke deal. Accordingly, the RAPP has become the first beneficiary of the nuke deal with the US. This new unit is expected to start power generation within a fortnight, RAPP sources said.

2 More deaths in Rajasthan from swine flu, toll rise to 28
Two more swine flu deaths were confirmed on Wednesday, taking the death toll to 28 in the state. During the day, 66 new cases were confirmed in Rajasthan, among them 43 are children, including 33 kids from Jaipur. "One of the deceased patients was a 42-year-old lady admitted at Mathura Das Mathur hospital in Jodhpur, while another person was a 70-year-old man from Harmada who died a couple of hours after being admitted to a private hospital in Jaipur. Both the patients died on Tuesday," said a senior health official. Till now, 12 swine flu patients have died in Jaipur while 11 deaths have been confirmed in Jodhpur. However, in comparison to the 755 reported positive cases in Jaipur, there have only been 90 cases reported in Jodhpur. Following the high mortality in Jodhpur, principal health secretary G S Sandhu is on a two-day visit to the division. On Wednesday, he inspected the treatment facilities and held a meeting with the district collector to inquire about the plan of action.

4-lane Chittorgarh byepass opened for traffic
The 30 Km 4-lane Chittorgarh byepass road constructed with an investment of Rupees 210 crore has been opened for traffic. Leading private construction company Ashoka Buildcon-Velecha Engineering has completed the project within stipulated time and the same is now being handed formally to the state government, company director Sanjay P Londhe said here today. Besides laying 30 Km long 4 lane road, the project involves construction of other road related structures including one embedded bridge, two fly-overs 16 under-passes and concrete pavements, Mr Londhe said. This is the second project completed by the group in Rajasthan.

Police have seized 500 g of brown sugar, worth Rupees 50 lakh in the international market, concealed in a South Africa-bound parcel at a courier company office here, police said today. The parcel was seized by the police yesterday. The parcel of books and other such materials was booked by a youth at the courier company's Behror Road office in Alwar and reached at the company's state office here for forwarding to South Africa, they said.
Sensing some foul play during the checking of the parcel here yesterday, the courier company staff informed the police which recovered a packet of the contraband concealed between the books. The youth of foreign origin, who had allegedly booked the parcel, was also arrested in New Delhi last evening, the police added.

Entrance test introduced for PhD at Rajasthan University
Rajasthan University will conduct an entrance test to those seeking admission to PhD programmes from the next academic session as per the meeting of the academic council on Saturday. "The initiative would increase the quality of research," said Bhupendra Shekhawat, spokesperson, RU. The entrance test will be conducted by the concerned department to judge the candidate's knowledge on the subject. Admission will be on the basis of the marks secured in the test, he said. To maintain transparency in the system, every department have to publish the number of seats on the university's website. Seats will be allotted to the candidates on the basis of the merit.

It has also been made compulsory for the scholars to upload their thesis on the university website along with the links to the published journals. Rajasthan with its royal forts and palaces amid the sand dunes and the beautiful backwaters of Kerala have eclipsed India's iconic Taj Mahal in an international survey that rated the world's top 133 tourist places. The survey, conducted by National Geographic Society's Center for Sustainable Destinations, has appeared in the latest issue of Traveler magazine. While Rajasthan is considered the world's 19th dream destination, the backwaters of Kerala have been rated 23rd. The Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri together have found 30th place in the survey. One of the panelists has opined that Rajasthan is India's Tuscany, a region in North-Central Italy known for its landscapes and its artistic legacy.
According to the survey, Rajasthan has a "strong sense of cultural identity" and "remarkable appeal and mystique". However, the survey expressed its concern about the tourism benefits not reaching the local communities. "Improved tourist facilities fuelled an eight-point jump from five years ago, though concerns remain that tourism benefits are not reaching local communities," it said. The lakes, rivers and canals in the southern Indian state of Kerala, "on which visitors ply aboard houseboats, present a unique travel and cultural experience". Mandore Express derails near Jaipur, 10 dead
The Delhi-bound Mandore Express which was on its way from Jodhpur to Delhi derailed this morning with some portion of the track penetrating its AC compartment, leaving 10 passengers dead and over 30 injured at Banskho, 40 kilometers from jaipur. Fifteen coaches of the train derailed at 1:30 a.m., after the train left the Pink City, said sources from the North West Railway. Following the derailment, a segment of the tracks pierced the AC compartment and probably hit the passengers, they said. Welders are being use to remove the iron rods. While three of the dead have been identified as Sonal Singh (18) of New Delhi, S Kumar of Jodhpur and Ujjawal Vadhwa (27) of Jaipur. The other three bodies are yet to be recognized. Nineteen of the injured, including a New Zealand national Ana Elizabeth, have been admitted to the Sawai Mansingh Hospital here. State-owned buses have been pressed into service to take the passengers to their destination.Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced an exgratia of Rs 5 lakh to the family of those killed. A sum of Rs one lakh would be given to the critically injured and Rs 10,000 to passengers who have received trivial injuries, said the Spokesperson of North West Railway. Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot also declared a recompense of Rs two lakh to the family of the dead and Rs one lakh to those seriously injured. The swine flu cases cross the mark of 80 after some new new cases of influenza A (H1N1) have been reported in Rajasthan, taking the number of positive cases of swine flu in the state to 455, an official said Friday. "On Thursday, we had taken samples of 173 suspected people, of which 75 were found to be positive," a senior medical and health department official told. Swine flu has been on the rise particularly among school children. "Out of these 455 cases, 179 are children from 46 different schools, majority of which are situated in Jaipur," the official said.
As a precautionary measure, a seven-day holiday has been declared in schools here. According to official data released Thursday, 20 people have died of H1N1 virus in Rajasthan. This does not include a woman who was suspected to have died of swine flu Thursday. Meanwhile, the state government has started outpatient department (OPD) in four satellite and 13 private hospitals in Jaipur. "We have also set up isolation wards in two satellite hospitals," Jaipur District Collector Kuldeep Ranka said.

A 28-year-old woman, admitted to the SMS Hospital jaipur, and one patient in a hospital in Jodhpur, died of the H1N1 virus yesterday. With this, 19 deaths due to the Influenza A have been reported in the state. As many as 41 children were suffering from the disease in the Pink City, and eight schools have decided to remain closed for sometime to prevent spread of the infection.

BJP win Todabhim while Congress win Salumber Seat
The by-election spoils were equally divided between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the ruling Congress in Rajasthan Tuesday with each winning one seat. While the BJP’s Ramesh Chand was declared elected from Todabhim, defeating his nearest Congress rival Shivdayal Meena by 8,200 votes, Basanti Meena of the Congress bagged the Salumber seat. She defeated Amrat Lal of the BJP by a margin of over 3,000 votes.
The Nov 7 by-elections were necessitated after legislator Kirori Lal Meena, an independent from Todabhim, and Raghuveer Meena from Salumber vacated their seats after getting elected to the Lok Sabha. In the 2008 assembly elections Kirori Lal Meena had won from Todabhim by giving a drubbing to both the Congress and the BJP, whose candidates lost their deposits. Raghuveer Meena of the Congress had won from Salumber in 2008. With these wins, the Congress tally in the state assembly has gone up to 102 and the BJP strength is now 79.

30 New swine flu cases reported in Rajasthan
More than 30 people, including eight students of two city schools, tested positive for swine flu in Rajasthan yesterday, official sources said today.Of the eight students, seven are from the SMS School while one belongs the MGD Girls School, the sources said. With this, as many as ten students of the SMS School had been identified with the disease during past three days.
The School management had already closed the institution for a week since Wednesday. With yesterday's new cases, the toll due to the pandemic in the state mounted to 90. Around 12 people have so far succumbed to the H1N1 virus, the sources said.

Bank of Rajasthan to provide home loan @ 7.5%
Bank of Rajasthan on Thursday said it has reduced rates on home loans to 7.5% under its “Apna Ghar Scheme” effective 9 November. For housing loans up to Rs30 lakh, it will charge a floating interest of 7.5% for the first year, 8.5% for the second and third years, and 8.75% from the fourth year, for all maturity periods. For housing loans of at least Rs30 lakh, the floating interest will be 8% for the first year, 9% for the second and third years, and 9.75% for the fourth year onwards, for all maturity periods.
Four Jaipur bomb blast accused arrested from Jabalpur
Accused in the May 13 Jaipur blasts case, was arrested on Wednesday night in a joint operation by the state Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) and the Rajasthan ATS. He was arrested from Tehri Pulia crossing in Lucknow’s Ghazipur while he was returning from Integral University on the Sitapur Road. On January 16, the Rajasthan ATS had procured the arrest warrant against Sarvar from a Jaipur court. It plans to take Sarvar to Rajasthan after seeking a transit remand from a Lucknow court.
According to a state ATS officer, Sarvar had a procured a degree from the Integral University in 2008. A native of Azamgarh, he was the batch mate of Hakim, who was also arrested by the ATS recently. Hakim was an accused in the Delhi blast case and was carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh, the officer added. A member of the Indian Mujahideen, Saif had revealed during interrogation that Sarvar had planted the timers used in Jaipur serial blasts.

IOC Jaipur fire and Environmental Impacts continue
Environmentalists were assessing the toxic impact of the devastating fire at the IOC depot in Jaipur on environment, sources said. While Rajasthan State Pollution Control Board has set up a committee for the purpose, the Central Pollution Control Board was also monitoring the situation. ''Environmental damage caused by the fire could be worse as a variety of toxic gases are polluting the environment'', said a State Pollution Control Board official. ''We can not say what the damage has been, but we are monitoring sulphur dioxide, suspended particulate matter (SPM), respirable suspended particulate matter (RSPM) and oxides of nitrogen. The damage can not be quantified at this point of time, but we have set up a committee to see the combined effect of all the pollutants and take remedial measures'', he said. Officials of Central Pollution Control Board were also working here to assess the damage, the Board sources said.
Rajasthan chief secretary T Srinivasan took charge
Newly-appointed chief secretary T Srinivasan took charge on Saturday. He replaced Kushal Singh, who retired on Friday. Born in Srirangam in Tamil Nadu in 1950, Srinivasan is a 1975 batch IAS officer and had his first posting as a sub-divisional officer (SDO) in Bharatpur in 1977. A post-graduate in biology, Srinivasan was special secretary (PHED) to the state government in 1988 before he went to United Kingdom to pursue an MBA degree at Leads University there. He resumed his duties as special secretary (general administration department) in 1989. In his 34-year-long career as a bureaucrat, Srinivasan has proved his administrative skills serving in various departments in the state. Srinivasan was the additional chief secretary before chief minister Ashok Gehlot entrusted him with the new assignment. Handing over the charge to Srinivasan, outgoing chief secretary Singh said that every minute of her tenure has been interesting. She offered her best wishes to the new chief secretary.
