Asaram's supporters attack media persons in Jodhpur

Asaram's supporters allegedly attacked a team of news channel IBN-7 on Saturday morning near his ashram in Pal area, Jodhpur. A reporter and a video journalist of the channel sustained injuries and their camera and equipment were damaged before villagers living near the ashram rescued them. The police said they have identified the attackers and strict action will be taken against them. Reports said the police have already arrested six persons from outside the ashram.  Asaram Bapu is facing arrest after a 16-year-old girl made a police complaint August 20, accusing him of sexually assaulting her at his ashram in Jodhpur. The spiritual leader has denied the allegation.
The official said that a couple of media persons were attacked by some supporters of Asaram Bapu near his ashram Saturday morning. "As a team has left to question Asaram and then probably arrest him, we fear that the law and order situation may further get out of control. His followers may create ruckus. So we have deployed heavy police force near the ashram and other places in Jodhpur," the official said. The official added that a battalion of Rajasthan Armed Constabulary (RAC) has also been stationed. "We will provide security to the media persons covering the developments in the case," said the official. Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari condemned the incident and urged the Rajasthan government to take strict action in the matter and bring those guilty to book. "I hope strictest action is taken in the matter. The law is above everyone and does not discriminate between an ordinary citizen and any godman," Tewari said.

Rupee hits lifetime low of 68.75 against dollar

The rupee on Wednesday hits life-time low of Rs 68.75 in early trade on heavy dollar demand, Government Policies and  heavy selling banks and exporters. The domestic unit hit a historic low of 68.75 against the dollar in the early trade on heavy month-end demand for dollar from banks and oil importers amid a sharp fall in the domestic equity market. Breaching the 67-level, the rupee tumbled by 82 paise to yet another life-time low of 67.06 per dollar in the opening session.
And yet, P Chidambaram tries to do precisely that. He has been repeatedly telling us that the rupee is undervalued at a time when the global winds are blowing against us. He is being proved wrong on a daily basis. UPA govt. must admit that there is something terrible wrong with their policies and so called Economic pundits.  Earlier Chidambaram was again quoted in the media as saying the rupee is undervalued. The fact is currencies have a price based on demand and supply. The only relevant value for any currency is the one you get when you want to buy or sell it.

Food Security Bill passed in Lok Sabha

Food Security Bill passed in Lok Sabha today after minor amendment from UPA. The amendments moved by MPs Gurudas Das Gupta and Sampath were defeated. Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav contended that the bill was being brought with an eye on elections and said it should be kept in abeyance till Chief Ministers are consulted as it would put additional burden on states. The ambitious bill was adopted by the House through a voice vote after a combined discussion on the measure and a statutory resolution seeking to disapprove the ordinance promulgated on July 5. Over 300 amendments moved by the opposition were rejected.
The bill is a pet welfare legislation of Congress president Sonia Gandhi, who was taken ill during the eight hours long debate and was rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here for observation. The bill, a part of the Congress election manifesto of 2009, is widely expected to be a game-changer for the ruling party as it prepares for the 2014 general election.

Jodhpur Police summon Asaram Bapu in sexual assault case

Jodhpur Police have summoned spiritual leader Asaram Bapu to appear before them in a sexual abuse case. The police have asked Asaram to appear before them in the next four days. The spiritual leader has been accused of sexual abuse by a minor in his ashram here. The self-styled godman has admitted to meeting the girl, but refuted allegations of sexual abuse. Asaram, who has already been booked for allegedly sexually assaulting the 16-year-old girl, is currently in Indore for spending time in 'solitude'.
The girl, who is from Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh, has alleged in her complaint that Asaram Bapu had asked her to stay back after prayers last week and then sexually assaulted her as her mother waited outside. The girl has said that when her father brought her to Delhi to meet the spiritual leader at a camp earlier this month, he left without meeting them. Her father then lodged a complaint with the police. The girl's family says they have been followers of Asaram Bapu for the past 12 years.

Asaram bapu booked for raping minor at Jodhpur ashram

Spiritual guru Asaram Bapu was on Tuesday booked by the Delhi Police for allegedly raping a minor girl of Jodhpur. The complainant - a teen from the Rajasthan town - has accused the 72-year-old self-styled godman of sexually assaulting her at his ashram earlier this month. According to police sources, the girl told her parents, who were staunch supporters of the guru, about her ordeal on August 17 and they approached the police two days later. The police sent her to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital for medical examination when sexual assault on the girl was confirmed. The victim told police that the guru had called her in the name of a religious ceremony at his Jodhpur ashram, where he allegedly assaulted her sexually. Her parents were shocked to know that the man whom they revered raped their daughter, the police said.
Jodhpur police commissioner Biju George Joseph said, "We have registered the case against Asha Ram (sic) Bapu and handed over the investigation to a female police officer of ACP level." He said that the police has provided security to the girl, adding that they secured the ashram at Manai immediately after receiving the information on Wednesday. There have been many more cases registered against the controversial guru and his followers related to land encroachments in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, attempt to murder and even culpable homicide of young students in 2008. Asaram was in news few months ago for his controversial remark on the victim of Delhi's December 16, 2012 gangrape case. He had said the girl was equally guilty along with her rapists as she should have called the culprits brothers and begged before them to stop.

Telangana spurs Maru Pradesh demand in Rajasthan

Demand for "Maru Pradesh" from Rajasthan, a separate states have sprang up in western Rajasthan after telangana from Andhra Pradesh (AP) announced. In Rajasthan, the issue of Maru Pradesh has been raked up again with Baytoo MLA Sonaram Chaudhary demanding creation of Maru Pradesh western Rajasthan as Maru Pradesh.  Col Sonaram, who had come to Jaisalmer on Thursday said that earlier too the demand for Maru Pradesh was raised many times. A few years ago, talks were held with Congress president Sonia Gandhi over the same but she said that only after resolving demands for many states like Telangana, Vidarbha etc, this issue would be discussed.  "This is necessary for the growth and development. We have been raising our demand for long and now after the decision to form Telangana state after separation from Andhra Pradesh, our demands should also be considered," Jaibeer Godara of the Morcha, claimed to be formed over a decade ago, said. The organisation will demonstrate in front of the Congress office in New Delhi on August 2, he added. They demands districts of Barmer, Bikaner, Churu, Ganganagar, Hanumangarh, Jaisalmer, Jhunjhunu, Osiyan (Tehsil of Jodhpur), Nagaur and Sikar should be given separate statehood status - Manu Pradesh.
Why they demands such thing even statistics-wise certain figures don't synchronize, it notes that the industrial output and employment in Maru Pradesh is less than 15 percent of the total industrial output in Rajasthan. It also mentions that the industrial output of Rajasthan during 2005 was 13 billion rupees in which the share of Maru Pradesh was only two million. Let people to decide what they want but we are totally shocked with the idea of Maru Pradesh from Rajasthan.

Cabinet insulates political parties from RTI heat Act

The cabinet cleared crucial changes to the Right to Information Act to block political parties from being covered under RTI by declaring that they are not public authorities. The Cabinet decision came nearly two months after the Central Information Commission's order of bringing six national political parties--Congress, BJP, NCP, CPI-M, CPI and BSP--under the RTI Act. The decision to amend the RTI Act was taken during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi on Thursday, official sources said.
The amendments state that declaring political parties as public authorities under the RTI would "hamper their smooth internal functioning since it will encourage political rivals to file RTI applications with malicious intentions". They maintain that the Representation of the People Act and the Income Tax Act provide sufficient transparency regarding financial aspects of political parties, it is learnt. The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), which acts as nodal department for the implementation of the RTI Act, in consultation with Law Ministry decided to amend the law.

Petrol price has been hiked by 70 paisa per litre, the fifth increase in rates in two months, and diesel by 50 paisa per litre on firming international oil prices. The increase in rates, which will be effective on Wednesday midnight, are excluding local sales tax or VAT. The actual hike will be higher and will vary from city to city. Petrol price in Delhi will go up by 84 paisa to Rs 71.28 per litre while it will cost Rs 78.61 per litre in Mumbai as against Rs 77.73 currently.
In a parallel move, they also hiked diesel rates by 50 paisa, excluding VAT, in line with the January decision of the government allowing them freedom to raise prices in small doses every month to wipe out mounting losses. Announcing the price hikes, Indian Oil Corp (IOC), the nation's largest fuel retailer, said it will end the fiscal with a revenue loss of Rs 1,28,500 crore on sale of diesel, domestic cooking gas (LPG) and kerosene. Following are the revised prices of petrol and diesel in four metros after oil firms hiked rates with effect from Wednesday midnight.
