Gujjar to protest outside assembly on 31 August

A Gujjar faction here today said it would hold a protest outside the Rajasthan Assembly on Tuesday to press for its demand for providing quota to the community. The Gehlot government made a number of promises to Gujjar leaders with regard to their demands, including a 5% special quota, but nothing concrete has been done, chief convener of Akhil Bhartiya Gujjar Arakshan Sangarsh Samiti Ramveer Singh Bidhuri told reporters here. Bidhuri, running a Gujjar faction other than Kirori Singh Bainsla, was on a 'janjagran abhiyan' to mobilise community people for the protest rally on August 31.
He said Gehlot's alleged dilly-dallying attitude had caused strong resentment among the community members and they would launch an agitation to press for their demands. Over 70 Gujjars held during various agitations were still in jails and the state government had done nothing other than giving false assurances to the community, Bidhuri said. The state government had announced a Rs282 crore package for community development under the Devnarayan Board, but the budget was cut down to mere Rs25 crore, he claimed.

Rajasthan Assembly monsoon session to begin tomorrow

The monsoon session of the Rajasthan State Assembly-scheduled to begin tomorrow, is likely to be stormy. According to sources the session is likely to last for about a week. BJP Legislature Party Deputy Leader Ghanshyam Tiwari said "The Government wanted to run away from the House and is intended to conclude the session in a day only". The Saffron party-upbeat after "good performance" in recently concluded elections to 126 civic bodies, student unions and dairy unions, is gearing up to dock the state government on its "failure", state of law and order and other burning issues.
Certain incidents of communal violence, controversy over "missing" explosive laden trucks dispatched from Rajasthan Explosive Company Limited(RECL) Dholpur, and state of affairs in the Education Department and various civic bodies would be raised in the House", Mr Tiwari said. "We would also try to expose the Congress Government's biased attitude towards our party, he said. "We want that the session should last at least for 15 days so that we could raise and discuss issues of people's concern including price rise in the House", the Opposition leader said.

Congress leader hari singh says gehlot is casteist

The state Congress initiated disciplinary action against its vice-president and former Cabinet minister Hari Singh for making serious allegations against party president and Union minister C P Joshi and chief minister Ashok Gehlot. On behalf of Joshi, the PCC general secretary Mumtaz Masih issued the show-cause notice to Singh, seeking an explanation on the latter's "anti-party activities" within seven days. "Singh made unfounded statements before media against the chief minister and the PCC president on August 16 and 17. The party takes it as grave indiscipline," Masih told TOI, adding that making baseless allegations against two senior party leaders just before the municipal elections (held on August 18) suggested ulterior motives of the PCC vice-president.
Singh, on the other hand, welcomed the party action against him, saying he had nothing to fear as whatever he said was true. "I am yet to receive the notice, but won't take seven days reply to it. Within three days I can explain how I was right in accusing Gehlot." Earlier this week, Singh had termed the chief minister a casteist, an anti- Jat leader and someone who had promoted large-scale corruption in the government. The Jat leader, in fact, demanded the party high command should set up an independent inquiry committee against him to examine if the charges made by him were false. "The party high command should act on the basis of such an inquiry and punish me only if I am found wrong," the four-time Congress MLA and former Lok Sabha MP said.

"We have told Cairn to write to us. Then we will decide," he said. Cairn India holds 70 per cent operator interest in the 6.5 bn barrels Rajasthan block that is at the centre of its parent, Cairn Energy Plc's $ 8.48 bn deal to sell its majority stake in the company to Vedanta Resources. So far, Cairn Energy and Vedanta Resources have only submitted the press statements they issued on August 17, announcing the deal, to the government.
The ministry letter states that certain production sharing contracts (PSC) entered into by Cairn India for exploring for oil and gas, have parent company guarantees and some PSCs have explicit provision of prior government consent in case there is change of ownership of the company, sources said. The PSC for the Rajasthan block provides for explicit government approval only in case of a party selling its interest in the block, but does not make the nod mandatory in case of change of ownership at corporate level like in the Cairn-Vedanta deal.

Govt to pick up Share in Barmer refinery

In what could give a new lease of life to the project, the Rajasthan Government has agreed to pick up 26 per cent stake in the proposed Barmer refinery to be set up by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC). Giving this information here, Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Jitin Prasada said the Rajasthan Government had been pressing for a 9-12-million tonne refinery at Barmer after Cairn India found 6.5 billion barrels of reserves that could produce 1.75 lakh barrels per day (8.75 million tonnes a year) of oil at plateau.
State-owned ONGC, which owns 30 per cent stake in the Cairn's oilfields, had originally proposed the project but later changed its mind stating that the project was not feasible in the absence of any kind of fiscal incentives by the State Government. “ONGC is in consultation with the Rajasthan Government on the feasibility of setting up a commercially viable refinery at Barmer,” Mr. Prasada said in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha. He said the State Government had indicated to take up 26 per cent stake in the proposed refinery, a condition an expert group headed by former Oil Secretary S. C. Tripathi had laid for making the project viable. The State Government is also in talks with Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) for a possible marketing tie-up .
