India's GDP growth rate at 5% , Lowest in 10 years

India's Economic growth rate slipped to a decade low of 5% in 2012-13 on account of poor performance of farm, manufacturing and mining sectors, raising hopes for rate cut by Reserve Bank to boost economy. The growth rate in the fourth quarter ending on 31st March, stood at 4.8 percent showing a marginal improvement over 4.7 per cent recorded in the third quarter of 2012-13. "Growth numbers are as per expectations," Finance Minister P Chidambaram said after the CSO released data on national income accounts in New Delhi on Friday.
Commenting on the the data, Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia said, "There is evidence the economy has bottomed out. But we still don't have evidence of a strong recovery. It is challenging to get to 6 per cent (growth) where last quarter is 4.8 per cent." According to the finance ministry, the growth in the current fiscal is likely to improve to 6.1-6.7 per cent. Economic growth or gross domestic product (GDP) had expanded by 5.1 per cent in January-March quarter of last fiscal. Economy had grown at 4 per cent in 2002-03. India's economic growth was at 6.2 per cent for the 2011-12 fiscal. It had grown by 5.4 per cent, 5.2 per cent and 4.7 per cent in the first, second and third quarters, respectively, of 2012-13, the data showed. Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council Chairman C Rangarajan said, "GDP numbers has been on expected lines.... as far as manufacturing is concerned perhaps we have reached the bottom".

Kataria gets court relief in Sohrabuddin case

Senior BJP leader and Rajasthan Opposition leader Gulabchand Kataria was on Tuesday granted interim relief from arrest by a sessions court in Mumbai till June 14 in the 2005 Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case. On May 14, CBI SP Sandeep Tamgadge had filed a 550-page third supplementary chargesheet naming Kataria along with Vimal Patni, a marble baron from Udaipur, Andhra IPS officer Narsimha Balasubramanyam and another police officer G Srinivasa Rao as accused in the case.
Kataria filed an application in the court seeking more time to appear before it. The court on Tuesday granted him 10 more days to do so. Meanwhile, the Social Democratic Party of India has demanded immediate arrest of Kataria. Nearly 200 party activists marched from Durgadas Park in Mansarovar to his residence which was stopped by the police a few meters away from Kataria’s residence. “Kataria should resign from his assembly seat on moral ground till the court pronounces judgment,” said Ashfaq Hussain, general secretary of SDPI. The activists accused BJP of influencing the investigation by launching a campaign in his favour. Sohrabuddin and his wife Kauser Bi were allegedly abducted by Gujarat ATS and killed near Gandhinagar in November 2005.

Amway India CEO, 2 directors arrested, granted bail

Crime Branch-Crime Investigation Department (Economic Offences Wing), on Monday, arrested Amway India Enterprises Chief Executive Officer and Chairman William Scott Pinckney and two directors of the network marketing company on charges of financial irregularities and cheating. A local court on Tuesday granted conditional bail to network marketing firm Amway’s India Chairman and CEO William S Pinckney and two company directors who were remanded to 14 days judicial custody. Pinckney and directors Sanjay Malhotra and Anshu Budhraja were arrested by the Wayanad Crime Branch (Economic Offences) wing from Kozhikode yesterday in connection with three fraud cases registered in Wayanad district. They were booked under the Prize Chits and Money Circulation Schemes (Banning) Act based on complaints filed by distributors in 2011.
The arrest was based on complaints filed in the Meppady police station by distributors Ashraf and Jaffer from Rippon and another distributor Hariharan from Vaduvanchal, Ambalavayal, Wayanad. The complainants accused the company of its failure in ensuring the promised benefits to those who joined the network marketing business. They alleged that the company had forced them to buy Amway products which included cosmetics and protein powder for huge sums of money. Last year the Crime Branch (Economic Offences wing) had conducted searches at Amway offices across the state including Thrissur, Kozhikode and Kannur districts as part of its crackdown on money chain activities. The company’s godowns in these centres were also closed and goods seized.  Meanwhile English Daily Times of India (TOI) accuse Andhra Pradesh cops going slow on Amway case, as Andhra Pradesh police have registered several cases against multi-level marketing (MLM) giant Amway since 2006, they seem to be going slow on the firm. Incidentally, the MLM giant has been on the radar of the AP police since 2006, but for mysterious reasons, the men in khaki have been going slow on the firm despite seven criminal cases were booked against it at various police stations in the state.

Bitti Mohanty remanded to judicial custody

A designated court in Rajasthan remanded Bitty Mohanty, alias Raghav Rajan, who was absconding after jumping parole in 2006 from a jail in the state, to judicial custody. Lawyer of Raghav Rajan, Ramesh Dayal, said on Monday, that his client was remanded judicial custody. He has also been granted bail. Ramesh Dayal said that the Jaipur police had argued their case before the court, but the court rejected the arguments, as it was not yet decided, whether the arrested individual was Bitti Mohanty or Rajan.
The court rejected the production warrant and remanded the accused to judicial custody on the basis of an ongoing case against him in Kerala. The accused has also been granted bail, he said. A local court in Alwar district of Rajasthan had earlier convicted Mohanty for raping his German friend in 2006. But he was released in November 2006 on parole to meet his ailing mother at Cuttack. He has been missing since then.

Bharat Nirman Rs.100 Crore advertising funded by taxpayer's money

UPA's launches "Bharat Nirman" Ad Campaign on all major Private TV channel including doordarshan and Radios in Rs. 100 Crore and buzz over it being funded by taxpayer's money.  Government says that Government do not have money so reduction in subsidy, do not have funds so allow FDI in retail but UPA has cleared nearly Rs 100 crore to be used by the Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity (DAVP) for releasing advertisements on radio, television, and print. Now CNN IBN has reported that government has sanctioned Rs 100 crore to advertisements on television, radio and in print showcasing the government's achievements. However, Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari claims this is no election campaign and merely highlights the achievements of the UPA government over the last nine years. And he definitely doesn’t see any similarities with the National Democratic Alliance’s ‘India Shining’ campaign in 2004. “India Shining was hype, hoopla and spin. Our campaign is different. Bharat Nirman is not a poll campaign, it tells the India story of the past nine years,” Tewari told CNN-IBN today.  The good news is that the campaign will end by February 2014 if the government lasts till then. Earlier if it doesn’t.
UPA II was marked by charges of scams and corruption. Will Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi be able to provide image rebuilding governance in the last lap?It is the duty of any incumbent government to dispel misgivings created by the Opposition. People’s mood is clear if you go by the results of recent state assembly polls.  People of this country know the truth. Series of scams and cases of corruption have been exposed under UPA II. Will lead partner Congress’ fate be the same as BJP’s in 2014 LS elections. Jeevika (Jeeta Vimukti Karnataka), an NGO, which has taken up the cause of bonded labourers in the State, has viewed as shocking, ridiculous and misleading the claims of Bharat Nirman on the exploitative bonded labour system through its advertisement in the print media under the title “Thanks to MGNREGA, no bonded labour anymore.” It seems the authorities of Bharat Nirman, a programme for rural infrastructure development being implemented by the Union government, are not aware of the facts or of how farm labourers have been converted into bonded labourers in different States, said Kiran Kamal Prasad, State coordinator of Jeevika in Recent story on Leading New Paper THE HINDU. A lot of money went into producing the commercials allegedly Rs16 crore - which have been directed by filmmaker Pradip Sarkar.
Now comes the Million $ question, "Bharat Nirman" TV commercial tag line says " सबका हित, सबका हक़"..Did you really see any benefit in spending your hard earn money in TV, Radio Advertisement instead of some work for people's welfare or they could have developed Five Villages into Model villages in Rs. 100 Crore fund.

Rajasthan Bandh by BJP get mixed response

Rajasthan Bandh today gets mixed response across state. Rajasthan Bandh affect normal life in capital Jaipur and other major cities without affecting the emergency services while life remains normal in small towns and other cities of Rajasthan today. Rajasthan State BJP has called for Rajasthan Bandh on May 18 in protest against falsely implicating its senior leader Gulab Chand Kataria by the CBI in Sohrabuddin fake encounter case. "This is a political conspiracy of Congress-ruled UPA Government to falsely implicate Kataria in the case, so the party has decided to call for bandh on May 18," party's State General Secretary Kalicharan Saraf said. BJP State president Vasundhara Raje said at a press conference here that the CBI had implicated Mr. Kataria on bogus charges “at the behest of Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot”. “We suspect that Mr. Gehlot had requested the Centre to slap charges on the Leader of Opposition as political vendetta,” she said.
About Sohrabuddin fake encounter case: Former BJP home minister of Rajasthan, Gulabchand Kataria, owner of Udaipur-based RK Marbles Vimal Patni and two policemen from Andhra Pradesh (AP) are the latest catch of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is investigating the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case. CBI has summoned them to remain present before the investigating agency on June 4. According to sources familiar with the development, Kataria, who was home minister of Rajasthan in 2005, was approached by Patni to eliminate Sheikh, who was threatening marble traders so that he could extort money. CBI has found that Kataria and Patni initially hatched a conspiracy to eliminate Sohrab and then Gujarat as well as AP policemen came into the picture. Inspector general of police, N Balasubramanyam and police inspector G Srinivasa Rao are the two cops from AP named by the probe agency. According to the sources, in 2005, after being approached by Patni, Kataria contacted Gujarat’s minister of state for home Amit Shah, who eventually executed the plan to eliminate Sohrab with the help of cops from Gujarat anti-terrorism squad (ATS). Suspended IPS officer DG Vanzara was then heading ATS. Rao and Balasubramanyam had helped Gujarat ATS to pick up Sohrab from Sangli in Maharashtra and eventually in his encounter. Balasubramanyam was earlier questioned by CBI. Sources said that Rao had helped the police in tracing Sohrab in Hyderabad before he was to leave for Ahmedabad in a bus.
Former Rajasthan CM Vasundhra Raje spotted in Rickshaw during Rajasthan Bandh in Jaipur (Rajasthan).

Rajasthan Fashion Week (RFW) 2013 concluded

The second edition of Rajasthan Fashion Week (RFW) 2013 that concluded Sunday certainly brought out the essence and flavour of the Rajasthan's royal culture and heritage but somehow failed to live up to expectations. Technical glitches that caused the delays in the shows and poor event management somehow disappointed the viewers. The main objective behind organising the fashion extravaganza was to promote the artisans and states' handicrafts, culture and textiles. Though several designers like Ritu Kumar, Vikram Phadnis, Pallavi Jaipuria, Payal Jain, Charu Parashar and Mandira Wirk brought out the best of Rajasthan's embroidery and prints in their collections, but few repeated the same old designs, prints and patterns.
Rajasthan Fashion Week (RFW) lives the true meaning of Fashion: a flash of colour with a dash of glamour. After celebrating the triumphant first season in 2012 RFW is now established as a recognized brand across the fashion industry of India and soon it will be projected to the international world of fashion. Our endeavors are not mere words but the action and we have already tied up with the world’s most known media brand FTV for our new season RFW 2013. RFW is designed to bring forth the aesthetic values of Fashion. Every person has a natural desire of looking good and feel ‘accepted’ in the socio-economic circle. Fashion plays an increasingly important role in an individual’s life because it is considered as a means of self-expression. RFW is trying to match steps with the ever evolving penchant of people and changing trends in fashion and accessories.

Siddaramaiah sworn in as Karnataka CM

K. Siddaramaiah, who led the Congress party to victory in the Assembly elections in Karnataka was sworn in as the 22nd Chief Minister on Monday. He was sworn in by Governor H R Bhardwaj at a ceremony at Sri Kanteerava Stadium in Bangalore. Siddaramaiah was elected as the leader of Congress Legislature Party, at the meeting of the newly elected MLAs in Bangalore on Friday. Though Siddaramaiah was the front-runner for the coveted post his selection came only after AICC observers headed by Defence Minister AK Antony asking party legislators to express their choice in writting.
A lawyer-turned politician, Siddaramaiah had narrowly missed the Chief Minister's "gaddi" in 1996 after the incumbent H D Deve Gowda went on to become Prime Minister. Siddaramaiah, who hails from Kuruba community, the third largest in the state, was then pipped by J H Patel. Both under Deve Gowda and Patel, he served as Finance Minister. With Siddaramaiah all set to install his Cabinet next week, lobbying for ministerial berths has intensified. Senior party leaders including D K Shivakumar, R V Deshpande, Shamanur Shivashankarappa and T B Jayachandra are likely to get plum ministries in the Cabinet, party sources said.
