AMU shut down after violence

Aligarh Muslim University(AMU) was today shut down indefinitely after violence erupted in the campus on Friday night as students of two rival groups clashed with each other. Reports said that one group belonging to Bihar and eastern UP and the other to western UP and some others parts pelted stones at each other and ransacked university property. At least 12 students were injured in the clashes. The western UP has sought the removal of deputy controller of the university alleging “serious irregularities” in admission procedure. On the other hand the Bihar lobby is throwing their weight behind the deputy controller. Anil Kumar, District Magistrate of Aligarh, has confirmed the firing in the campus. “After a clash between two groups, The AMU has been closed indefinitely” AMU spokesman Rahat Abrar said. All the Exams have been postponed, he said. In view of the incident security has also been beefed up in and around the campus, a police office said, here. No arrests have been made so far, he added.

Tillakaratne alleges match-fixing in Sri Lanka‎

Former Sri Lankan captain, Hashan Tillakaratne, has jolted the cricket fraternity, claiming match-fixing has been a part of cricket in his country. He warned that the team could be in serious trouble in the near future, just like Pakistan who suffered recently in England's spot-fixing scandal. Taking to the Lankan press, Tillakaratne stated, “I say this with responsibility. It (match-fixing) is just like a relay. I run my lap and hand over the baton to you, you complete your lap and give it to another. This is a network. No one can ever go out of it and no one can come into it. This situation was always there.” However, the former player didn’t allege the team of fixing in the ICC World Cup 2011. He said, “I am not saying that this match (The world cup final) was fixed. But anyway match fixing is something which has been in this country over a period of time. This has spread like a cancer today.”
According to Tillakaratne, the situation has become much worse compared to the past and the reason behind it was corrupt administrators and politicians, who have remained silent for their own gains. Tillakaratne claimed of knowing all the people involved in match-fixing and threatened to reveal some big names in the near future. He said that there was still some time to stop Sri Lanka from becoming Pakistan. Cricket in Pakistan has also suffered a lot in the recent past due to fixing scandals. Three top cricketers, Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir were proved guilty of spot-fixing in January this year. They were charged with lengthy bans and heavy fines. There were some other players questioned by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) over match-fixing, but were able to prove their innocence to the board. Although things appeared to be headed towards the right direction, Pakistan’s former wicketkeeper batsman Zulqarnain Haider claimed the opposite. The 25-year-old left the team during a series against the Proteas in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and revealed later that some players were still involved in wrong doings. He didn’t take any names back then in London, but later blamed Kamran Akmal of having links with bookies.

Who will be Successor of Sai Baba ?

Sathya Sai Central Trust on Thursday ruled out chances of inducting Satyajit, Sathya Sai Baba’s caretaker, in the trust. “Satyajit was a student of the Sathya Sai University. He was chosen by Baba to do some personal service. He is an employee of the trust,” V Srinivasan, trust member, told reporters. “The next head of the trust would be selected from among existing trustees. A decision will be taken shortly. I don’t think he (Satyajit) will be made a trustee.” It was said that Baba’s family members were not in favour of making Satyajit the trustee head, succeeding Baba. But Baba’s nephew and trust member RJ Ratnakar denied this. “We have no differences with him. We have a reasonably good rapport,” Ratnakar said.
There are now six people who can win the control of the The Sathya Sai Central Trust.

Sibal lays foundation stone of Central University of Rajasthan

Union HRD Minister Kapil Sibal lays foundation stone of Central University of Rajasthan(CUR) at Bander Sindri Village near Kishangharh in Ajmer district of Rajasthan with MoS and Ajmer MP Sachin Pilot, Kishangarh MLA Nathuram Sinodia and Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot. Addressing a function after laying the foundation stone for the Central University of Rajasthan, Mr. Sibal said public-private partnership would be put into action in a big way for establishing 1,000 new universities and 45,000 colleges across the country in the years to come. As part of an ambitious plan for improvement in educational standards, the Union Government would frame new rules and launch a national vocational education framework next month, said Mr. Sibal.
The Central University of Rajasthan, functioning from a temporary campus in Kishangarh since 2009 when it was established, would shift to the new campus in a phased manner and start functioning regularly from August this year. The university has been conducting eight courses in the past two academic sessions. Union Minister of State for IT and Communication Sachin Pilot, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, Rajya Sabha MP Prabha Thakur, Vice-Chancellor M. M. Salunkhe, Kishangarh MLA Nathuram Sinodia and State Higher Education Minister Jitendra Singh were among those present at the function. Mr. Sibal said while 31,000 colleges and 600 universities would be linked with the National Knowledge Centre during the next two years, the Central Board of Secondary Education would separately provide a vocational degree to the students of 9th and 12th standards. The Union Minister praised Mr. Gehlot for promptly allotting land near the Jaipur-Ajmer highway and providing infrastructure facilities for the sprawling campus of the first Central varsity in the State. Mr. Gehlot said works for construction of roads, installation of power supply lines and arrangements for water supply on the campus would be completed shortly at a cost of Rs.30 to 40 crore. He said an atmosphere facilitating higher education was gradually evolving in the State and requested Mr. Sibal to announce establishment of a world-class university in Jaipur. Mr. Pilot said the Central University would be a lively symbol for the 21st century in Rajasthan and prepare a new generation of well-informed and erudite youngsters. The varsity, he added, should develop itself in an eco-friendly manner and introduce new courses to serve the specific needs of the desert State.

Rajasthan Govt working for welfare of People - Gehlot

Free medicines for all, power surplus by 2013-14, long-term solutions for water and a metro system for the state capital... Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot says his government is simultaneously working on all sectors to further its commitment to the welfare of the people. In a major healthcare move, the government will provide free medicines at government hospitals to all sections of society, Gehlot said in a freewheeling interview to IANS covering a wide range of topics. The project, which will cover every one below and above the poverty line categories who register for treatment at government hospitals, will be launched Oct 2. "However, if we are able to complete all the modalities, we may introduce it even earlier," Gehlot said. "We are committed to the welfare of the people in every section of society. Our effort is to provide a transparent government with sensitivity towards the poor and weaker sections."
Detailing other welfare schemes, he said a housing policy had been launched to provide 500,000 houses to the economically weaker sections (EWS) and the low income group (LIG) in the next five years. There have also been steps taken to improve infrastructure, especially in the electricity and water sectors, the chief minister said. The government, he said, is committed to making Rajasthan a power surplus state by 2013-14. Projects involving more than 10,000 MW of power are under implementation at various stages. At present, the total power capacity is 9,053 MW and the current deficit is 10-15 percent depending upon the season.

B.Com students can appear for TET, B.Ed

Union ministry of human resource development on Tuesday issued a circular to National Council for Teachers Education (NCTE) making B Com-B Ed students eligible for appointment as a teacher in government schools. Earlier, on August 23, 2010 NCTE released a circular specifying that a person with BA/BSc-B Ed with 50% marks is eligible to appointment as a teacher. The circular had excluded persons with B Com-B Ed qualified for appointment as a teacher. This decision had created an uproar in the country, including Rajasthan. This order will make thousands of B Com graduates eligible for teaching jobs in government schools.

India main source of black money - WikiLeaks founder

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange today said there are Indian names in the Swiss bank data list that are going to be made public."Yes, there are Indian names in the data that we have already published or are going to publish. I can''t remember specifically whether there are Indian names in the coming publication. But I have read Indian names," Assange told Times Now.Indicating that there are bigwigs among the Indians having their accounts in Swiss banks, he said, "Similarly, in these private Swiss banking concerns, where you need at least a million dollar, which is a significant amount of money...not an average Indian..." Asked whether the names will come at any point, he said on "that, you should absolutely not loose hope".He, however, declined to reveal anything more on the issue at this stage.Noting that he has come to know through a report that there are more Indian deposits in the Swiss banks than any other nationality, Assange said, "there is no reason why India should not be aggressive." Praising German government for its aggressive approach to unearth black money stashed offshore, he said that India "should be more aggressive because India seems like it is loosing per capita much more tax than Germany." Assange alleged that Indian government''s response to the WikiLeaks cables was "one of the worst in the world" and a "clear attempt to mislead the nation on what the cables were".He said that response by the Indian government left a lot to be desired.Assange also dismissed contention of the Indian government that accords on double taxation were coming in the way of tracking the trail of black money."Double taxation does not have anything to do with asset hiding. It doesn''t simply cover asset hiding," he said.Assange said that issue of stashing blackmoney in foreign banks was much worse than just local corruption as when money is pushed offshore, ".....then everytime they are selling rupees and the result is that the currency of the nation is debased...everything for all Indians become more expensive as a result of that transfer." Assange had earlier claimed that he was handed over documents of bank accounts by a former banker Rudolf Elmer and the whistleblower also claimed that the names in the documents came from "US, Britain, Germany, Austria and Asia -- from all over," and include "business people, politicians, people who have made their living in the arts and multinational conglomerates -- from both sides of the Atlantic".

Resign if favouritism charges are proved‎ - Ashok Gehlot

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Friday accused Opposition BJP for making "false" allegations of corruption against him, and said he would not remain in chair "for a second" if charges of favouritism were proven. "If any charge that my family members benefited in any way from our government is proven right, I will not remain Chief Minister for a second," Gehlot said. He said his opposition BJP, when in power in the state, was in a muddle of corruption charges, and it would do better to look into the track record of its own government. Gehlot's first public comments on the issue came at the State Convention of NSUI here, a week after media reports said that the Rajasthan government had awarded contracts to a firm in which his son is employed.
Reacting to the report, former Chief Minister and leader of the Opposition Vasundhara Raje had said that the charges had brought the corrupt nature of the state government out in the public domain. "If a particular company received contracts worth Rs 110 crore during my government, it had received contracts worth Rs 300 crore during the previous government through tenders," he said rubbishing reports that his government favoured the firm where his son works as a legal consultant. "I replied to the charges when they were raised and I am happy that even the media in general did not give much credence to them," Gehlot said. Gehlot said the Raje government was itself facing several charges of corruption. "Their own people have accused them or wrongdoings. It was during their tenure that police fired on protesters during the Gujjar agitation. There has been no such incident during our government, and they do not seem happy about this," he said. "Throughout my political life I have tried to make sure that my family members, my wife and children do not even misuse the official vehicle provided to me," he said. Gehlot had earlier refuted the allegations, but he was speaking on the issue for the first time from a public platform.

Aruna Roy in Time's 100 most influential list

Aruna Roy in Time's 100 most influential list. Time magazine has announced its annual list of 100 most influential people in the world. The list features five prominent Indians from the field of business, IT, science, sports and social service. Time selects personalities whose contribution has influenced and shaped the region they belong to. The people featuring on the list are, as Time puts it, "artists and activists, reformers and researchers, heads of state and captains of industry."
She started her journey from Tilonia, a tiny village in the deserts of Rajasthan in the 1980s, Aruna Roy began a long campaign to bring transparency to India's notoriously corrupt bureaucracy. Its signal achievement is the 2005 Right to Information (RTI) Act, a law that has given the nation's poor a powerful tool to fight for their rights and has influenced similar measures in other countries. It has also inspired thousands of RTI activists, who have exposed everything from land scams to bank embezzlement to the misuse of public funds meant for the poor. Since then, Roy, 64, has helped shape an ambitious new rural jobs program and a food-security bill that will come before Parliament this year. Many social activists clamor for India to do more for the dispossessed. A former civil servant, Roy doesn't just condemn a broken system; she changes it. Other names includes MS Dhoni, VS Ramchandran, Azim Premji and Mukesh Ambani.

Dowry victim takes poison before coming to meet Rajasthan CM

A 20-year-old woman, who came to meet Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot to seek his intervention for action in her dowry related case, was admitted to the SMS Hospital here today following sudden illness. Harsha Kanwar of Khatipura reached here at the Chief Minister's residence here this morning along with her mother, to seek his intervention in dowry related atrocities allegedly meted out to her by her Gujarat-based in-laws. Since it was not the day of 'Jan Sunwai', she was directed to a police officer to brief about her case, lodged with the police last month.
She fell sick during the briefing and later it was revealed that prior to proceeding for the Chief Minister's Residence, she had consumed poison at her residence and wanted to ensure that if she died of poison, her in-laws were punished appropriately. The woman also brought a letter with her to inform the officials of her suicide bid and wish. Harsha was rushed to the hospital where her condition was now stated to be out of danger, the police said.

.xxx Domains Available for Registration Now

The controversial .xxx top level domains are finally available for registration almost 11 years after the extension was first proposed. On Friday, the porn-only address was added to the domain name system's root servers – through a convoluted process that involves box-ticking from domain overseer ICANN, the US Department of Commerce, and VeriSign – and the first .xxx domain names started working around midnight. Right now, surfers can visit websites such as porn.xxx and sex.xxx, both of which are – for now – place-holders with safe-for-work generic content. The company contracted to run the domain registry, ICM Registry, has also moved its corporate web site to icm.xxx and icmregistry.xxx.
The .XXX domain will be open to the majority later on in the year, but some people in the industry aren’t fans. Some claim that branding adult-themed websites in this way is a form of segregation, and that it bands the wide spectrum of Adult content under one label.

ISRO PLSV-C16 launched successfully

ISRO’s PSLV—C16 rocket today successfully launched into orbit the latest remote sensing satellite Resourcesat—2 that would study and help manage natural resources along with two nano satellites. The ISRO chief’s announcement was cheered by the battery of scientists at the mission control centre who heaved a sigh of relief as they were gripped by an added anxiety following two successive failures of GSLV missions last year.
Apart from carrying three sophisticated cameras, the satellite also carries additional equipment called AIS (Automatic Information System) from COMDEV, Canada, for the surveillance of ships in the VHF band to derive their position and speed, among others. "With the launch of Resourcesat-2, ISRO will have 10 remote sensing satellites in orbit- Resourcesat 1, TES, Cartosat 1, 2, 2A and 2B, IMS-1, RISAT-2, Oceansat-2," S. Satish, ISRO's director (Publications and Public Relations), said. Rajasthan Govt orders inquiry on uterus removal

Three private hospitals in Rajasthan’s Dausa district removed the uterus of 226 women last year, an RTI application filed by an NGO has found. The NGO claimed that the hospitals earned about Rs 14,000 from each patient. As the private hospitals were recognised for delivery under the government scheme ‘Janani Suraksha Yojna’, the facts were revealed through RTI from the office of State medical and health department. On Saturday, State Health Minister Aimaduddin Ahmed Khan said that no FIR has been filed because there is no act governing private hospitals. “Suo motu we cannot take action,” said Khan. Khan informed that the government had set up a committee to probe the incident for any irregularity. “The final report will take some time as members will have to meet all the women,” he said. “The registration of four hospitals has been cancelled, while one was not even registered,” he added. Devender Madan owner of Madan Hospital, one of the implicated hospitals , said, “We have consent letters of the women. They were suffering from complications in their uterus.”

M Srivatsan and Vasundhara Gautham of Bhavan's Rajaji Vidyashram, Two Class seven students of Chennai have jointly won the second prize with a Romanian team in a competition conducted by NASA this year. Under 'Project IRIS' (International Research and Integration Station), they developed and designed an alternate habitat for human space settlement. The design won recognition for its detailed and in-depth representation of life and its necessities integrated in a space city. Srivatsan said "the project was relatively easier as we imagined how life would be in another planet without the resources that Earth provides."
All basic essentials for sustaining human life - from food, sanitation, shelter and energy was provided. They also conceptualized the way of life - administration, governance, employment, culture and transportation. "Srivatsan and Vasundhara worked for over three hours every day, brainstorming and designing this project. My only contribution was to inform them about the competition I came across on NASA website," said Manivanan, Srivatsan's father. While Vasundhara took care of providing food and other biological aspects, Srivatsan dealt with the technical details. The most important aspect of this project was use of 'quantum computers' which formed a crucial part of the space city and disseminated information to people via indirect interaction using dead human retina. The duo worked on the project for less than six months and plans to participate in the same competition next year. The Sequoia Middle School team from California, U.S.A., bagged the first prize
