Maharani College Jaipur declared first cut-off

Maharani’s College has declared its first cut-off on Monday. Those aspiring for a B.Com degree need to have 90% or above, while other popular courses in humanities too have seen a rise in the cutoff marks. The college has received 10,000 applications against a little over 2,000 seats for various degree courses, a 35% rise compared to last year. The high cut-offs will only allow the creamy layer to seek admission in the five-decade old institution. “The high cutoff was expected with the kind of phenomenal Class XII results this year,” said Kusum Jain, principal, Maharani’s College.
Over 3,000 students had applied for B.Com (pass) course against a total of 240 seats, and another 500 students applied for B.Com (honours) which has 60 seats. One could gauge the level of competition as students with even 89.99% were not able to secure a seat. In the reserved categories—OBC, ST and SC—the first cut-off has gone beyond 75%. Students who have failed to secure a seat in the college, are now turning to the private colleges for admission. The college however, is yet to consider the 10% increase in the seats since it hasn’t received the circular from the Rajasthan University. Once it does, a few more students can hope to make it to the college. “I was quite sure to get admission in this college in the second list, which is scheduled to be announced in a week’s time,” said Rituka Sharma, who has scored 85% in commerce.
The list for humanities has sprung the biggest surprise with a substantial increase in the cut-off in comparison to last year. “It has touched an all time high of 76.9% for the pass course in general category. Even for OBC and ST the cut-off remains at 73.23% and 72.62% , which is reflecting a growing interest in arts courses,” said Jain. Against 600 seats for humanities, over 3,500 students had applied. Science stream has also seen an average rise of 1-2% in the cut-off marks. In almost all degree courses in BSC (honours) in Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Zoology, the cut-off has hovered around 70%.

Saina Nehwal win Indonesia Open Super Series 2010

Ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal continued her rampaging form as she completed a spectacular hat-trick of titles by clinching the Indonesia Open Super Series with a straight-game triumph over Japan's Sayaka Sato in Jakarta on Sunday. Unbeaten for the past three weeks, the top seeded defending champion defeated her unseeded but resolute rival 21-19 13-21 21-11 in a rollercoaster encounter that lasted 45 minutes. This was Saina's third successive title, having won the Indian Open Grand Prix at home and the Singapore Open Super Series Tournament last week. This is also the 20-year-old's third Super Series title overall. In a see-saw battle, the 19-year-old Sato matched the defending champion shot for shot for most part of the opening game but was undone by her own mistakes at crucial junctures.
The first game that lasted 14 minutes had both the players tied 11-11 at one stage and though Saina remained ahead for most part after that, a gritty Sato did have her share of chances. Leading 20-18, Saina could have finished it off on her own serve but she handed Sato a chance by hitting the shuttle wide. But Sato could not capitalize and smacked a forehand into the net to give Saina the opening game. The second game saw Sato making a comeback with the change of ends also leading to a change in fortunes. The Japanese proved to be the more dominant of the two players in these 15 minutes as she raced to a 4-9 lead. Sato sent down some powerful shots from the baseline and Saina could only watch as they fell out of her range. The frustration of being out-witted by a rival ranked 26th in the world showed when Saina clinched her fist at one of Sato's unforced errors. Shaken by the setback, Saina roared back in the decisive third game. The Indian took a comprehensive 11-5 lead but continuing her never-say-die attitude, Sato reduced the margin to 9-13.
The Indian, however, was in no mood to slip up and emerged triumphant after reeling off four successive points. A jubilant Saina let out a huge scream after winning the title, which also made her richer by USD 18,750.

Sonia Gandhi lays foundation of 8.8 Km Rohtang Tunnel

The National Advisory Council Chairperson, Sonia Gandhi on Monday laid the foundation stone of the 8.8 kilometer horse shoe shaped tunnel at the southern portal, 25 kilometers from Manali in Himachal Pradesh. The Defence Minister Mr. A.K. Antony was also present on the occasion besides several dignitaries. The Border Roads Organisation spokesperson Col. Rahul Trivedi said the northern portal of the tunnel will open in the Kellong valley of Himachal Pradesh leading to Leh. Conceived way back in 1983, the two-lane tunnel for vehicle movement will help travellers avoid the Rohtang Pass, about 51 km from Manali, all year round and may reduce it to a mere tourist spot at an altitude of 3,978 metres.
Rohtang Pass remains closed for over six months a year due to heavy snowfall, cutting off the Lahaul-Spiti valley and Leh. The drilling the Rohtang tunnel will reduce the 475-km distance between Manali and Leh by 46 km, Minister of State for Defence M M Pallam Raju, who is in Manali ahead of the inauguration, said on Sunday. "The distance reduced by the tunnel may seem small, but look at the time that is saved for travellers. And the tunnel will be available for travellers all year long," he said.

Saina Nehwal enter into Indonesian Open Super Series semifinals

Defending champion Saina Nehwal overcame an opening game deficit to reach the semifinal of the Indonesian Open badminton tournament and stay on course for back-to-back Super Series title in Jakarta on Friday. Saina, who on Thursday jumped three spots to third in world rankings after winning the Singapore Super Series, looked rusty against Ella Diehl of Russia in the first game and was doing the catch up job from the start before losing it 17-21. The top seeded Indian, however, shrugged off the initial rustiness and stamped her authority over her opponent in the next two games by using to telling effect her superiority in smashes and long rallies.
Saina and the eight seeded Russian were neck-and-neck at 5-4 before the Indian pressed the accelerator in the second to take it 21-11. In the decider, Saina took a straightaway 6-0 lead and though the Russian reduced the gap 13-10, the Indian ran away with the game 21-16 and the match in 58 minutes. In the semifinal on Saturday, Saina will meet fourth seeded Eriko Hirose of Japan who beat fifth seeded Jie Yao of the Netherlands 21-19 10-21 22-20 in another quarterfinal match.

Fuel prices decontrolled; diesel, LPG, kerosene to rise

EGoM headed by Finance Min Pranab Mukherjee has cleared decontroling the prices of Petrol which makes it dearer by upto Rs 3.5 /litre while Diesel will be costlier by Rs 2/litre and LPG cylinder to cost Rs 35 more whereas kerosene will be dearer by Rs 3/litre from Friday. In a major decision to bring petroleum products in line with market rates, the government on Friday freed petrol from all pricing controls and hiked diesel prices by Rs. 2 a litre, Oil Secretary S. Sundareshan announced after the meeting of the Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) in New Delhi on Friday. Even diesel prices will be eventually freed of all administrative controls, Sundareshan said. The decisions, taken by the EGoM headed by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherejee, were timed appropriately to take advantage of relatively lower global crude prices, which are hovering around $77 a barrel.
Besides, this would also help cut down on the government’s huge subsidy bills, as also relieve the oil marketing PSUs of staggering burden on account of selling these fuels much below the market prices. Sundareshan said that the government would, however, continue to “heavily subsidise” the cooking fuels. Oil Minister Murli Deora had, on more than one occasion, briefed the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Mukherjee on the crisis that would befall oil PSUs if no decision was taken on hiking prices. In May, WPI-based inflation provisionally entered double digits at 10.16 percent. State oil firms currently lose about Rs. 215 crore per day on selling fuel below the imported cost. At present, petrol is being sold at Rs. 3.73 a litre below its cost, diesel at a loss of Rs. 3.80 per litre, kerosene at Rs. 18.82 a litre and domestic LPG at a discount of Rs. 261.90 on every 14.2-kg cylinder.

India beat Sri Lanka to lift Asia Cup

A 15-year-old title drought came to an end as India won the Asia Cup cricket tournament after crushing defending champions Sri Lanka by 81 runs in a lop-sided final on Thursday. Electing to bat first, India posted a competitive 268 for six and then defended the total without much hiccup with the seamers producing a scintillating performance, skittling out the hosts for 187 in 44.4 overs at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium. This was India's first Asia Cup triumph since Mohammad Azharuddin had led them to the title in Sharjah in 1995. On that occasion also, India had beaten Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the final.
The Indian seam attack rose to the challenge when it mattered the most, accounting for the scalps of Tillakaratne Dilshan (0), Upul Tharanga (16), Mahela Jayawardene (11), Angelo Mathews (0) and captain Kumar Sangakkara (17) in just 16 overs. Sri Lanka never recovered from those telling blows. But for Kapugedera's unbeaten 55 of 88 balls, which was laced with four boundaries and a six, the match would have ended sooner. Nehra was the most successful Indian bowler with four for 40 while Zaheer Khan and Ravindra Jadeja taking two wickets apiece by conceding 36 and 29 runs respectively. Praveen Kumar chipped in with one wicket.

Govt recommends death penalty for Afzal Guru

The central Home Ministry has written to the President of India that Afzal Guru's is a fit case for death sentence, in response to the mercy plea filed by his wife Tabassum. The Centre said the nature of the crime is heinous and the convict in the Parliament House attack deserves no mercy. A ministry note says: "Mercy petition filed by Tabassum, wife of the Parliament House attack convict Afzal Guru, should be rejected. Nature of the crime committed is heinous and he deserves no mercy." However, eminent jurist Shanti Bhushan termed the Centre's move unfortunate, saying Guru was only a conspirator of the attack, and did not carry out the attack. "This is very unfortunate. The government is bowing down to the Opposition pressure. Death penalty is for the person who actually does the act. He was only a conspirator, so the SC should not have given him death sentence. It is an additional punishment to be on the death row for five years," said Shanti Bhushan.
The petition for mercy to Guru did not find favour from the Home ministry following recommendation of the Delhi LG Tejendra Khanna. The case has been dragging on for nine years. Five terrorists had attacked the parliament on December 13, 2001 leaving seven security personnel dead. Sopore resident Mohammed Afzal Guru was charged with plotting the attack a few days later. On December 18, 2002, the Delhi High Court awarded death sentence to Guru following which he moved the Supreme court. But the apex court upheld the death sentence on August 4, 2005. Guru's hanging was fixed for October 20, 2006 but his wife Tabassum had filed a mercy petition and as a result his execution was stayed. As per procedure, the then President APJ Kalam sought the Home Ministry's views on the plea. The Home Ministry in turn sent the Afzal file to the Delhi government seeking advice where it was held up for four years. The state government acted only after 16 reminders. Lt Governor Tejinder Khanna sought clarifications on the Afzal Guru mercy petition last month on May 18, 2010.

Mercury rise to 49 degree after Phet in Rajasthan

The intense heat wave tightened its grip over the state claming two lives in Jaipur on Monday. With the state boiling, Sriganganagar recorded a maximum temperature of 48.7 degrees Celsius. Pink City sizzled at 45 degrees Celsius, a minor dip of .8 degree from Sunday, when it recorded the second highest temperature in a decade in June. A rag picker and a sweeper fell prey to the scorching heat in the city. Meanwhile, the minimum temperature also shot up to 33.6 degrees Celsius, four degree above normal. While the scorching mercury brought life to a standstill in several parts of the state, the Met office doesn’t predict any immediate relief. “No significant change will be seen in the maximum temperature over the Northwest India during the next two-three days,” the Met said.
However, there was some respite in store for Southern Rajasthan which witnessed duststorm and thunderstorms on Sunday. At all other places in the state, the maximum temperature has remained nearly six degrees above normal. Thunderstorms or dust storms over the next few hours can check the upward march of the mercury, the Met said. It has predicted isolated duststorm or thunderstorm to hit parts of northwest India, but rules out the possibility of rain. According to the Meteorological office, the monsoon is likely to strengthen from June 25 onwards with formation of low pressure areas over the north Bay of Bengal. This may lead to increase in the rainfall over East and Central India. The east-west seasonal trough is likely to increase the thunderstorm activity over the Gangetic plains.

GoM recommended 1,320 crore package for Bhopal gas victims

The Group of Ministers on Bhopal gas disaster on Monday recommended a Rs 1,320 crore package for the victims enhancing the compensation for the kin of dead to Rs 10 lakh and for permanently disabled Rs five lakh. The GoM, headed by Home Minister P Chidambaram, concluded four-day deliberations and submitted its report to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, which will be considered by the Union Cabinet at a special meeting on Friday. The Ministers recommended fresh steps to seek extradition of former chief of Union Carbide Warren Anderson and filing of a curative petition in the Supreme Court to restore stringent charges against the accused in the gas leak disaster that claimed over 15,000 lives nearly 26 years ago. Surface Transport Minister Kamal Nath, a member of the GoM, told reporters that the dead would get Rs 10 lakh while the permanently disabled will get Rs five lakh, those temporarily disabled will get Rs one lakh.

Rajasthan govt seek Centre's assistance to RMSA, RTE

The Rajasthan government has urged the Union government to provide financial assistance for better implementation of the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA), Right to Education (RTE) Act and several other schemes in the state. ''Earlier, it was decided that the RMSA would be financed by the Centre and state governments on 55:45 sharing basis. After our request, the Centre agreed on 65:35 sharing basis. Even this assistance is not enough for our state due to its geographical condition,'' Rajasthan Education Minister Bhanwar Lal Meghwal said yesterday at the 57th meeting of the Central Advisory Board of Education(CABE), chaired by Union Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal.
''Free of cost benefits are being provided to girl students of class sixth and eighth of Kasturba Gandhi Residential Schools in 186 blocks of the state,'' he added. He urged the Centre for assistance as the state has been planning to open 1990 schools this year, besides providing several facilities in at least 11,000 schools. ''The Centre should also provide financial assistance to implement the Right to Education Act in the state,'' Mr Meghwal said and informed that the state government has constituted five task forces to implement RTE.

Gehlot deny any death from hunger in Udaipur

Stories of starvation deaths in Udaipur district are false and politically motivated, chief minister Ashok Gehlot said on Sunday. The government is providing 25 kg of wheat at the rate of Rs 2 per kg to people below poverty line. Besides, the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme is there in every village and Rajasthan is the first state in the country to implement this scheme. “The allegation of people dying of hunger is not only false but malicious,” he said. He was responding to questions of reporters during his visit to Udaipur. A few days back, Kirorilal Meena MP had staged a dharna in Udaipur alleging tribals were dying of starvation in Kotara tehsil in the district. Earlier, he inaugurated the fifth national convention of Adivasi Bhil Samaj at Chitrakoot Nagar in Udaipur. The convention was organised by Rajasthan Bhil Samaj Vikas Samiti. Addressing the convention, he said the state government was making all efforts to bring the poor and disadvantaged sections of the society to the mainstream. The government has decided to give land rights to 60,000 tribal families. Out of these, 30,000 families have already been given the pattas (land deeds). Hostels have been built in Jodhpur and other divisional headquarters to provide opportunities of education to the marginalized people. The government has decided to provide high-yielding varieties of seeds and fertilisers to the farmers to increase output, he said. Addressing the convention, Union minister CP Joshi said that policies like food security for all, right to education and programmes like NREGA have changed the face of rural India. Minister for tribal development Mahendrajeet Singh Malviya said the cause of backwardness of tribals is poverty and lack of education. He appealed to the tribal community to abandon the practice of consuming liquor and asked them to take maximum benefits from the policies of the government. Mangilal Garasia, minister of state for sports and education, said there should be a special agriculture policy for peasants with small holdings. The convenor of the convention, Chheetarmal Khant, highlighted the problems of the tribals.

Bank of Rajasthan employees on strike from Monday and Banking operations in Rajasthan are set to be paralysed Monday with all bank employees threatening to boycott work in support of the three-day strike by Bank of Rajasthan staffers, a bank employees union official said Friday. CBI blast multi-crore scam in railway recruitment

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday unearthed a multi-crore scam related to recruitment in railways, exposing a major hole in what was touted as a failsafe scheme for appointments by the country’s largest employer. Those who have been nabbed include the son of S M Sharma, chairman of the Railway Recruitment Board, Mumbai, who used the huge funds acquired by leaking exam papers to buy a a Mitsubishi Pajero. The other accused are A K Jagannathan, former assistant divisional rail manager, and his son Srujan. Railway Recruitment Boards — in all 20 — are responsible for recruiting around 50,000 employees for jobs, including drivers, guards and assistant station masters having a direct bearing for the safety of passengers. The recruitment procedure was revamped following complaints of largescale corruption and favouritism. The Mumbai scam shows that the process is still not foolproof and that the functionaries of the notoriously corrupt Recruitment Boards know how to exploit the vulnerabilities.

Anand Sharma, Jethmalini among winners in Rajasthan

Union Commerce Minister Anand Sharma and eminent lawyer Ram Jethmalini were among those who Thursday won the Rajya Sabha election from Rajasthan. Ash Ali Tak of the Congress and V.P. Singh of the Bharatiaya Janata Party (BJP) were the other candidates who were elected to the upper house of parliament from the state. In all, five candidates, two each of the Congress and the BJP and independent Santosh Bagrodia, were in the fray for the four seats. Bagrodia, a sitting Rajya Sabha MP from the Congress, was not given a ticket by the party this time. Bagrodia, however, had a tacit understanding with the Congress and had made the elections tough for the BJP candidates. Fearing cross-voting and horse trading, the BJP, for the last couple of days, had locked up all its legislators in a hotel on the outskirts of the city.
The Congress has 102 legislators in the 200-member assembly, while the opposition BJP has 79 members. The BJP needed 82 votes to ensure victory for both the candidates and with the Communist Party of India-Marxist, which has three members, abstaining from voting, the BJP only needed 80 votes which it was able to garner thanks to the support of lone Janata Dal-United Fateh Singh and an independent.

Rajasthan BJP MLA in Rajneeti's pirated CD case

Rajasthan BJP's MLA are now days in fresh row of Rajneeti film's pirated CD case. A local court will hear tomorrow a complaint lodged against BJP whip Rajendra Singh Rathore and two others for arranging a pirated film CD for his party MLAs at a hotel here. In the complaint filed before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (Jaipur district), under the Indian Copyright Act and the Information Technology Act, complainant Yogendra alleged that Mr Rathore, the hotel owner and the manager yesterday arranged for a pirated CD of Bollywood film 'Rajneeti' for the MLAs, who were staying there since Monday night. "Hence, they are guilty of violation of above two Acts," the complainant stated. The BJP MLAs, in large numbers, are staying in the hotel, ahead of the Rajya Sabha polling scheduled for tomorrow.

Jaswant Singh may return back in BJP

Barring the formality of an announcement, the return of senior leader Jaswant Singh to the Bharatiya Janata Party is certain. Ahead of the party's Patna conclave BJP president Nitin Gadkari had met Mr. Singh. However, to use Mr. Singh's words, “some distance” remained to be covered. Almost a week later, the deal seems to be done. It is expected that when Mr. Gadkari returns to the capital next week — he has gone to Mumbai — a formal announcement will be made. Asked about Mr. Singh's homecoming, senior general secretary Ananth Kumar said on Tuesday: “You will get to know when the announcement is made.”
Mr. Singh, who represents Darjeeling in the 15th Lok Sabha, was summarily expelled after some senior party leaders objected to his views on Pakistan founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah in a biography authored by him. His expulsion came at the BJP's ‘chintan baithak' in Shimla soon after the party's defeat in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. The demand for his ouster was led by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who alleged that there were derogatory references to India's first Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in his book and it would be difficult for him to explain this away to the people of Gujarat. With several party leaders asking for his expulsion and senior leader L.K. Advani acquiescing by his silence, then party president Rajnath Singh signed off the order expelling Mr. Singh without giving him even a show-cause notice. Ten months later, there are many leaders in the party who feel gross injustice was done to him. Mr. Gadkari had also announced his intention of trying to “bring home” some leaders who had parted company but had continued to believe in the party's ideology.

Rajasthan remembers Laila, Majnu

A fair is held in Rajasthan near the India-Pakistan border in memory of the star-crossed lovers - Laila and Majnu - who are believed to be buried in a tomb there. The legend of these two lovers has also influenced Sufi literature where the tale is a prototype of divine love - the beloved Laila is actually god or a divine lover worshipped by Majnu who is literally possessed by her love. But in western Rajasthan, the story is symbolic of the composite culture of the sub continent. So in this fair, hundreds of people collect to ask for the blessing of the two lovers and the gift of true love in their lives. "I heard there was a fair here so I came to see. It is said that whatever you ask for here, you get it," said a girl visiting the fair.
Before the Kargil conflict this shrine was also open to Pakistani visitors. There are many variations to the legend of Laila and Majnu. In a version popular here Laila is forcibly married off to another man. Her husband challenges majnu but as soon as his sword pierces Majnu's heart, it is Laila who dies. The tomb of Laila Majnu is a major attraction in these parts, therefore it's not surprising that even one of the BSF posts on this border is called the Majnu post.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee of Economic Affairs. "Disinvestment of Coal India Ltd would be through book building process in the domestic market. "In conjunction with the issue of the equity, government will also disinvest its 10 per cent pre-issued paid up capital of the company (Hindustan Copper)," Chidambaram said.

Oil spill the worst environmental disaster - Obama

The massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico down south is the worst environmental disaster America has ever faced, US President Barack Obama has said. "This oil spill is the worst environmental disaster America has ever faced. And unlike an earthquake or a hurricane, it is not a single event that does its damage in a matter of minutes or days," Obama said in his address to the nation. After becoming the President of US in January 2009, this was for the first time that Obama addressed the nation from his Oval Office. "The millions of gallons of oil that have spilled into the Gulf of Mexico are more like an epidemic, one that we will be fighting for months and even years," he said, hours after his return from his fourth visit of the region that are badly hit of oil spill. "But make no mistake: we will fight this spill with everything we've got for as long it takes. We will make BP pay for the damage their company has caused. And we will do whatever necessary to help the Gulf Coast and its people recover from this tragedy," he said.
Obama said his administration has directed BP to mobilise additional equipment and technology. In the coming days and weeks, these efforts should capture up to 90 per cent of the oil leaking out of the well. This is until the company finishes drilling a relief well later in the summer that is expected to stop the leak completely, he said. From the very beginning of this crisis, the federal government has been in charge of the largest environmental cleanup effort in the nation's history - an effort led by Admiral Thad Allen, who has almost forty years of experience responding to disasters.

Mansoon in Rajasthan by 21 June

Several places in the state experienced duststorm and light rains overnight, which gave a respite from the heatwave conditions even as the South-west monsoon is likely to reach Rajasthan by June 20-21. Drizzle or light rain were reported in Udaipur, Bikaner, Sriganganagar, Pilani, and Churu districts on Monday, while overcast conditions prevailed at most places, a Met official said. The pre-monsoon activity has begun. The average date for the monsoon to arrive in the state was June 16-17. “However, there could be a week’s delay in the south-eastern regions of Kota, Jhalawar, Banswara, and Dungarpur,” an official said. The delay is attributed to the cyclonic storm Phet which disturbed the onward march of monsoon.
Meanwhile, the state government has directed the relief department in 33 districts to prepare for any exigencies during the monsoon, another official said. The primary health centres have been asked to take precautions to contain malaria and swine flu during the monsoon.

My brother’s excellence has motivated me and I have always tried to follow him,” said Abhijit. His elder brother is studying MBBS at Sardar Patel Medical College (SPMC).
Abhijit can get admission in any top medical college in India, but he has surprised his teachers and friends when he decided to get admitted to SPMC here. “It doesn’t make a difference if you study in Delhi, Jaipur or Bikaner. Success comes with hardwork and dedication which can be achieved anywhere,” he said. He feels that small-town students are more hardworking. He, however, said students of smaller town are usually ignorant of the opportunities and examinations. Saina Nehwal rallied from behind to beat Mew Choo Wong of Malaysia 20-22, 21-14, 21-12 and clinched the women's singles title in the Yonex-Sunrise India Grand Prix badminton tournament in Chennai on Sunday. After dropping the keenly contested first game, Saina held the temperament and clawed her way back into the contest by pocketing the second game. In the deciding game, the second seed Malaysian often came up with deep returns and powerful smashes close to the back line. Wong score winners twice finding the vacant spots behind Saina, but it was short-lived as the world number six Indian was able to score points almost at will. Govt approve 2430 Crore for Tech education up-gradation

Government on Thursday approved a proposal for investment of Rs 2,430 crore in nearly 200 engineering colleges under a scheme aimed at upgrading the standards of technical education institutions in the country. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, gave the go ahead to the second phase of Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) scheme which has been running since 2003 with World Bank's assistance. The second phase envisages an investment of Rs 2,430 crore in about 200 technical educational institutions with an aim to produce higher quality and more employable engineers, Home Minister P Chidambaram told reporters in New Delhi.
The project has covered 127 institutions in 13 states in the first phase. "The first phase has been rated as satisfactory by the World Bank," Chidambaram said. The major objectives of the scheme are strengthening of institutions with improved learning outcomes and employability of graduates, scaled-up post graduate education and demand-driven research and development and innovation, establishment of centres of excellence and imparting of pedagogical training to the faculty. The project will be open for competition and participation by all engineering institutions approved by All India Council for Technical Education. An estimated 200 engineering institutions including the Centrally Funded Institutions like National Institute of Technology will be competitively selected along with a small number of eligible private unaided institutions. The TEQIP scheme was started to upgrade the quality of NITs and state-level engineering institutions which were lagging behind in research and training. Out of total project expenditure of Rs 2430 crore in the second phase, the World Bank will contribute Rs 1395.50 crore, the Centre's contribution as per 11th Five Year Plan is Rs 500 crore while the states and private unaided institutions will invest Rs 518.50 crore and Rs 16 crore respectively.

Govt rises MSP for Pulses

Surging prices notwithstanding, the government has hiked the minimum support price of pulses by up to Rs 700 to a maximum of Rs 3,170 a quintal but support for paddy has been increased by a meager Rs 50 a quintal. The MSP for pulses, considered to be the wholesale market benchmark, is just about 30--50 per cent of retail prices of some varieties like moong, urad and arhar that are being sold for up to Rs 100 a kg in retail market. A decision for raising MSP of kharif crops for 2010-11 was taken at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. An agriculture ministry official later explained that higher MSP was meant as an inducement to farmers to go for increasing the acreage for cultivation of pulses, for which India is a net importer and the sharp rise in prices is on account of higher commodity prices globally.
The highest increase was given for the widely consumed arhar dal (tur), the MSP for which has been increased to Rs 3,000 a quintal from Rs 2,300 last year. The MSP for moong, another popular variety, has been increased to Rs 3,170 per quintal from Rs 2,760. Support price for urad has been increased to 2,900 a quintal from Rs 2,520 last year.
