Anna Hazare ends fast after 288 Hours

Anna Hazare broke his fast after 288 hours on the 13th day at the Ramlila Maidan in Delhi as huge crowds witnessed and celebrated the victory of people's power. Anna ended his fast after Parliament adopted the Sense of the House resolution on his three key points on Saturday. Two five-year old girls from Delhi offered coconut water and honey to Anna Hazare. He is now heading to Medanta Medicity in Haryana's Gurgaon soon after he breaks his fast. Doctors are concerned about his health as his fast enters the 13th day today with his internal organs getting affected. Hazare had lost at least 7.5 kg since August 16 when he sat on a hunger strike for a strong Lokpal Bill. He now weighs 64.5 kg.
Outlining his future agenda, Hazare chose reforms in election and education systems and working for the betterment of farmers and labourers. He said his fight would now be for Right to Recall and Right to Reject. While Right to Recall would be for those elected, the Right to Reject will be a column in the ballot paper which would ensure the voter has a right to say that he does not like the listed candidates. "We have to reform electoral system. (we need) Right to Reject. You should be able to reject your candidate in the ballot paper. We have to do that. "If majority say they do not like any of the candidates in the fray, the election should be cancelled. How much money they (candidates) will distribute? Once the candidate spends Rs 10 crore for one election and if the election is cancelled, then right sense will dawn upon them," he said.

Anna Hazare to end Fast, Govt agree 3 demands

Anna Hazare to end Fast by today or tomorrow morning as per Team anna member Shati Bhushan as Govt agree all three demands. Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha passes the anna's Jan Lokpal bill with sound support without even need voting as all parties support the Anna Hazare's support. The eight-hour long extraordinary debate on the Lokpal issue Saturday ended with Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee expressing “a broad sense of the house” that includes an in-principle acceptance of three key demands of Anna Hazare by the Lok Sabha. Anna Hazare will break his fast at 10 am tomorrow, according to his close associate Kiran Bedi.  Bedi tweeted that the 74-year-old activist does not break his fast after sunset. “Anna is known to have never broken his fast after sunset. Recall, he did so even in April fast. This is his decision again. He decides,” she tweeted. Later, Bedi told PTI he will break the fast at 10 am tomorrow. If he breaks his fast tomorrow at 10 am, he will complete 288 hours of his hunger strike which began on August 16.

Mission Education by Four Friends in Rajasthan

Young men like them would be spending their money on shopping, entertainment or on savings. But not these four friends from Rajasthan. They have pooled their money to start a school for poor kids and even take classes before leaving for office. For almost two months now, the four friends from Rajasthan's Jodhpur town - Mangal Singh Deora, Mahesh Banjara, Manish Dabi and Kamlesh Shankhla - have been funding the education of under-privileged children by starting a school at a rented building. At the end of every month, the four pool their savings for the school - for books, pens, uniforms and teachers' salaries. In two months, the schools' enrolment figure has grown to 50. While Banjara is a graduate in science and has done a computer course, his three friends are undergraduates. The four are in the age group of 25-28 years. They started the primary school in two rooms in Jodhpur, some 330 km from state capital Jaipur. "Most people don't know what education is worth because they are fortunate to have it the easy way. Due to my poor background, I faced insurmountable difficulties in getting it. And that's what became the inspiration for this cause," Deora told IANS.
"I started working on it in the last two years and finally it took shape in July. Now we have over 50 students in our school, a majority of them from poor background. Six kids do not even have parents," he said. A marketing executive with a private firm, Deora had to drop the idea of higher studies after school as his family could not afford it. But now he is trying to get a graduation degree. "The difficulties which I faced would always pinch me and make me think about what I should do so that others don't go through the same situation. I got the idea of starting a primary school for poor children and my three friends chipped in," he added. Banjara works in a local factory while Dabi and Shankhla are executives in a private company. "In June, we checked our bank balance which was enough to rent two rooms and we started a primary school," said Manish. They are paying Rs.4,000 as monthly rent for the building that houses their school named 'Hamara Bachpan' (our childhood). "We contacted people living in slums and came to know that their children were not going to school. We convinced them to send their children to our school. They agreed. About 50 children are now getting free education here," said Mangal. "We take classes before going to work and have also appointed teachers to teach the students," he said. "We are so happy to do this. We never realised that the response is going to be so good," he said. But due to a rush of admission-seekers, the four friends are now faced with a bigger challenge. "We have limited resources and to provide everything free to every student is bit of a problem, we also have to pay the rent as well as salary to the teachers... We are now requesting parents, who come from somewhat better background, to help us in whatever way they can to run the school," said Shankhla. Ramesh Kumar, father of five-year-old Rohit who studies in Hamara Bachpan, said: "We are really thankful to these guys for educating our children... Otherwise it would have been very difficult for us to send them to school because of the high fees."

Anna Effect: Rajasthan Assembly adjourned twice

The issue of Anna Hazare-led anti-corruption crusade continued to mar the proceeding of the Rajasthan Assembly as an adamant Opposition demanded debate over the issue resuting in stalling of question hour proceeding and two adjournments in a row for a total period of one-and-a-half-hours. As soon as the House met after a two-day gap, CPI(M) legislature party leader Amara Ram rose to raise the demand of immediate debate on the issue of corruption. Mr Ram wanted that question hour be suspended and debate should be held to discuss prevailing situation in the country over the issue and explore effective measures for totally curbing corruption. Deputy Leader of BJP legislature party also supported CPI(M)'s stand and said when the Lok Sabha could suspend the question hour to discuss the issue, why this could not be done in this House.
Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said the Government was ready to hold discussion any time as decided by the Chair. However, Speaker Deependra Singh Shekhawat wanted to proceed with the question hour business and called for the first question, to which Home Minister Shanti Kumar Dhariwal rose to reply, which was opposed by the Opposition members. Amid the din, the Speaker adjourned the House for an hour within seven minutes. When the House reassembled, the din reappeared, however, the Chairperson proceeded for zero hour business and read ruling on call attention motion and special mentions and again adjourned the House for half-an-hour within a few minutes. On the opening day of monsoon session on August 23, the Opposition BJP staged a walk-out over the issue.

Japan PM Naoto Kan Resigns

Japan's Prime Minister Naoto Kan confirmed  his resignation. He announced his resignation as president of the Democratic Party of Japan, effectively ending his tenure as Japanese leader. "I resign as the (party) president effective today," Kan told senior party officials, Jiji press quoted him as saying.  Kyodo news agency said, setting the stage for Japan to pick its sixth premier in five years as it tries to rebuild from a massive earthquake and tsunami, forge a new energy policy after a nuclear crisis and curb huge public debt.
The race to become Japan's sixth leader in five years was blown wide open on Monday when former foreign minister Seiji Maehara, aged 49, decided to run. That cut sharply into the chances of Finance Minister Yoshihiko Noda, a fiscal conservative. The support base for the two men overlaps in the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) - and whoever is elected next week as leader of the party with control of the lower house will become prime minister. Japan's new leader will have to grapple with a soaring yen that threatens exports, step up efforts to rebuild from the March earthquake and tsunami and end a radiation crisis at the Fukushima nuclear plant - all while trying to curb public debt and cure the ills of a fast-ageing society. But concerns run deep as to whether the next prime minister will fare any better than his predecessors in the face of a divided parliament and ruling party split by policies and personal feuds.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs resigns

Apple CEO Steve Jobs has resigned as its CEO and named Tim Cook as his successor. Jobs has been elected chairman of the board and Cook, previously Apple's Chief Operating Officer, will join the board with immediate effect. In a letter to the 'Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community', Jobs said, "I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know." "Unfortunately, that day has come. I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the board sees fit, as chairman of the board, director and Apple employee," he said in the letter. Jobs, 55, submitted his resignation to Apple's board of directors today and "strongly recommended" that the board implement its succession plan and name Tim Cook, 50, as CEO. "Steve's extraordinary vision and leadership saved Apple and guided it to its position as the world's most innovative and valuable technology company," said Genentech Chairman and Apple board member Art Levinson on behalf of the company board. "Steve has made countless contributions to Apple's success and he has attracted and inspired Apple's immensely creative employees and world-class executive team. In his new role as chairman of the board, Steve will continue to serve Apple with his unique insights, creativity and inspiration," he said.

Earlier this month, with a market capitalisation of about USD 346 billion, Apple briefly surpassed energy major Exxon Mobil to become the country's most valuable company. The news of Jobs' resignation came after the markets closed on Wednesday. In after-hours trading, Apple stock fell 5 per cent. Jobs were diagnosed with a rare form of pancreatic cancer in 2004 and underwent a liver transplant two years ago. In a letter in January this year, he said he was taking another leave of absence to "focus on my health". He, however, emerged briefly from his medical leave during the year on a few occasions.

Aruna Roy and Arvind Kejriwal

Aruna Roy and Arvind Kejriwal knwon as "Activists of change" for their fight for transparency in government and Corruption free society. Aruna Roy is known as Kejriwal's mentor and had tutored him for years. They had worked together to get the Right to Information(RTI) Act passed, but today they stand at the opposite end of the river on Jan Lokpal Bill. Difference arises when Aruna roy came with the third version of Lokpal which demands PM under the ambit of ombudsman. It wasn't too long ago when NAC member Aruna Roy invited Arvind Kejriwal to draft a comprehensive anti corruption law under the NCPRI (National Campaign for People's Right to Information).  "Solution to corruption is not in that one Lokpal bill and not in the form that it is. So while we think that the expression against corruption is a great thing, the solutions to that are made too simplistic," says Aruna Roy. The drafts, like the finalised Jan Lokpal bill, concentrated too much power in the hands of a single institution, something that the NCPRI did not agree with.
Aruna Roy was born on 26 June 1946 is social activist who founded and heads the Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathana(MKSS). Aruna served as a civil servant in the Indian Administrative Service between 1968 and 1974. She then resigned to devote her time to social and political campaigns. She joined the Social Work and Research Center (SWRC) in Tilonia, Rajasthan.
Arvind Kejriwal was born in Hissar, Haryana in 1968. Kejriwal graduated from IIT Kharagpur as a Mechanical engineer. Kejriwal joined Tata Steel after his graduation from IIT Kharagpur. Later Kejriwal joined the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) in 1995 and worked as an Additional Commissioner of Income Tax in Delhi.

Anna issue rock Rajasthan Monsoon Session

Anna Hazare's agitation for the passage of the Jan Lokpal bill in Parliament on Tuesday rocked the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly on the first day of the Monsoon Session with Opposition BJP raising the demand for a debate on the issue and staging a walk-out. ‘Anna’ marks 1st day of Rajasthan Monsoon Session. As soon as the House assembled, Leader of the Opposition Vasundhara Raje said there was an urgent need to discuss the issue of Hazare's agitation as countrywide people were on the roads expressing their desire to eradicate corruption. As soon as the House assembled at 1100 rs today, Speaker Deependra Singh Shekhawat took up the business of the day directing the Ministers concerned to introdduce Bills and table ordinances.

West Bengal to be renamed as Pashchim Banga

A committee comprising West Bengal’s Commerce Minister Partha Chatterjee and other opposition party leaders has unanimously proposed that the state of West Bengal or Paschim Bangal be renamed as “Paschim Banga”. The decision was taken at an all-party meeting held here on Friday. The initiative to rename the state has been taken keeping the need to gain administrative advantages. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee suggested the new name and unanimity was reached on it, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Partha Chatterjee told reporters after the meeting in the state assembly. "It has been unanimously decided that the state's new name will be Paschim Banga from now in all languages," he said. "We wanted a change in the name of the state to get the administrative advantage," he said.
The chief minister presided over the meeting attended by Trinamool Congress, besides ally Congress and Socialist Unity Centre of India, Left Front constituents Communist Party of India - Marxist, Communist Party of India, Revolutionary Socialist Party, Forward Bloc as also Gorkha Janmukti Morcha, among other parties. Banerjee had earlier empowered Chatterjee and Leader of the Opposition Surjyakanta Mishra to study the new name for the state. Chatterjee said the letter 'W' in West Bengal came almost at the end of the alphabet and this resulted in a disadvantage for the state. "Paschim Banga as a new name also mirrors history," he said, adding that a resolution would be moved in the assembly for the adoption of the name, which would be then referred to the Centre. Forward Bloc sources said the choice was made from among the suggestions of Paschimbanga, Bangla and Bangabhumi'. At the time of independence in 1947, the erstwhile Bengal was bifurcated. The eastern part became East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) and the western part remained with India becoming the state of West Bengal. The matter has been debated many times that "west" in the name does not make sense as "East Bengal" is no more relevant.

Annagiri effect: Govt Employees, BJP, CPI & People joins

Annagiri in Rajasthan is at its peak. Support for social activist Anna Hazare's stir for a more inclusive anti-graft law is growing across Rajasthan, with protests rallies across the state and a half-day market shutdown in the state capital. After lawyers and doctors striking work and taking out rallies showing solidarity to his fight against corruption, the state government employees are now ready to join the league of Anna. A faction of the All Rajasthan State Government Employees Federation led by its president Mahendra Singh has announced to go on a half-day's leave on Friday. Members of the Singh-led federation would also take out rallies at the district headquarters to muster up support for Anna's campaign.
The traders, wearing black bands, also held a sit-in in the Walled City area. "Jaipur has over 27,000 shops and almost all of them did not open before afternoon," said Girdhar Sukhija, another shopkeeper. The city's youth remained front-runners by taking part in the agitation with a difference. A group of girls with tricolours in their hands, one of them sitting on a horse, made round of the entire city shouting slogans in support of Hazare. “We are students and want to draw attention of people towards this issue so we took this exercise,” said one of the girls. Youth were seen taking out vehicle rallies on the deserted roads near the secretariat building. “We have skipped classes to be part of this historic agitation. It is a to fight for a cause," said Abhishek Kumar, a Bachelor of Arts student who along with his 50 friends took out a vehicle rally on Sahkar Marg. A representative of voluntary organisation, Jago Janta Society, said: "25 supporters are organizing fast every day and it will continue till the government meets Hazare's demands."

Rajasthan HC denies bail to ADGP AK Jain

Rajasthan High Court today denied anticipatory bail to suspended ADGP A K Jain in the infamous Dara Singh alias Daria "fake" encounter case. The accused officer sought anticipatory bail on medical grounds. However, the single bench of Justice RS Rathore rejected the plea and held that since he and other accused were holding influential police posts, they were in a position to influence witnesses. "Besides this, the Supreme Court observation in a case is also in favour of early arrest of accused in cases of such encounters", the judge pointed out. The District and Session Court had already turned down Jain's request for anticipatory bail.
The CBI Special Court which has been holding trial in the case, has also declared Jain and another accused RPS officer Arshad Ali as proclaimed offenders(POs) last month, following failure of the CBI to produce them before the court in compliance to arrest warrants issued in May earlier this year. The trial court had also issued standing arrest warrants against them. The two officers have been untraceable since the issuance of the arrest warrant. Another IPS of IG Rank A Ponnuchami had already been arrested by the CBI and presently is under judicial custody. Dara Singh alias Daria, a dreaded criminal of Churu who was allegedly working as chieftain of a liquor contractor's raiding party-, was killed in a "fake encounter' on the outskirts of Jaipur in October 2006. His family lodged complaint in the court against the police demanding a CBI probe into the case, ultimately the Supreme Court accepted their request and ordered for the CBI probe in the case. The CBI on June 3 had filed charge sheet before the Court against 16 accused including Jain, Ponnuchammi and Ali and also included former BJP Minister Rajendra Singh Rathore as suspect against whom investigations were still on. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court while hearing a petition recently also regretted failure in arrest of accused in such serious cases and directed the concerned agency/Government to arrest and produce before the court all accused wanted in such serious cases.

Team Hazare detained before protest fast

Anna Hazare and his close aides have been detained by police after the Gandhian vowed to go ahead with his fast for a strong Lokpal and defy prohibitory orders at the venue of his agitation. High drama was witnessed in Mayur Vihar area in east Delhi when police detained the 73-year-old Hazare at about 7:30 am from an apartment about three hours before he was to sit on his agitation. A large number of supporters opposed the action and shouted slogans supporting him.  Home Secretary R K Singh said Hazare was detained because he said he intended to defy prohibitory orders and sit on fast at J P Park in central Delhi.
Delhi Police had denied permission for his fast after he refused to abide by all the 22 conditions set by them for the agitation. Hazare's close aides Kiran Bedi and Arvind Kejriwal were detained outside Rajghat. Lawyer Shanti Bhushan was also picked up. "We will move the Supreme Court," Prashant Bhushan, lawyer and close associate of Hazare said. Describing his detention by police as the beginning of the "second freedom struggle", Hazare asked people to participate in a "jail bharo" agitation. "My dear countrymen, second freedom struggle has begun and now I have also been arrested. But will this movement be stopped by my arrest. No not at all. Don't let it happen," Hazare said in a pre-recorded message. Police had made elaborate arrangements and stationed several buses and trucks in Mayur Vihar, Rajghat and other places to ferry Hazare's supporters. Senior BJP leader L K Advani said he was not surprised at the detention of Hazare and charged the government with looking for scapegoats and stopping peaceful protests instead of fighting corruption.

Happy Independence Day to all Indians

RajasthanTalkies.com On the day of India’s 65th Independence Day, Rajasthantalkies.com wishes Indians all across the globe a Happy Independence Day. Independence is something which is vital to our living being and goes unnoticed while we are engrossed in our daily chores. The freedom of speech and expression, right to equality, right against exploitation, right to freedom of conscience and free profession, right to propagation of religion and much more, which we enjoy must be cherished as not everyone in this world is lucky to enjoy them.
“Freedom is taken, not given,” were the famous words uttered by Subhash Chandra Bose and it certainly holds relevance to the present day scenario. On this very day 64 years ago, India tasted the joy of freedom after more than 100 years of sufferance and suppression under the British Empire. What had been a rich prosperous land, thriving in culture and wealth, was plundered by the over-ambitious English, and it took a lot of bloodshed, struggle and will power to win back what was rightfully ours – OUR INDEPENDENCE.
RajasthanTalkies.com is celebrating India’s Independence Day 2011 with all readers.

To confetti being showered and music blasting out of the loudspeakers, Hero MotoCorp unveiled its new brand identity in the presence of celebrities such as actor Shahrukh Khan, pop star Akon, former tennis champion Boris Becker, F1 driver David Coulthard and cricketer Irfan Pathan, at the O2 arena on the banks of the Thames. ONGC to invest more on Oil exploration in Rajasthan

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) plans to spend Rs 1,000 crore on exploration in Rajasthan and Gujarat in two years, Basin Manager P B Pandey said today. Talking to newsmen here on the occasion of 56th foundation day, Pandey said, "The basin has a target to drill 49 exploratory wells this financial year and also to deploy two 3D-3C, 5 3D and one 2D seismic crew for acquiring high resolution seismic data". The target for drilling of wells is higher this year due to success in drilling of 43 exploratory wells last year, 21 of which were hydrocarbon bearing. The success percentage of wells drilled to hydrocarbon bearing was 55.6 per cent which means that for every 1.8 wells drilled, one well was proved successful, said Pandey adding this ratio was considered quite creditable in the hydrocarbon industry. The significant new finds of the basin in 2010-11, include Vadtal 1, Vadtal 3 and Aliabet 2, of which Aliabet promises to be good find for ONGC, Pandey said.
After failure of GSPCL in finding oil and gas from shallow water in Aliabet, ONGC took it over and started drilling wells there. "We have started getting about 1.5 lakh cubic meter gas per day from two drilled wells in Aliabet, which promises to be a good find for us," Pandey said. "Now we will take up a cluster of four wells in this region to save expenditure being incurred on exploration and will start commercial production from it after getting oil from it first, said Pandey.

Aruna roy have difference of opinion on Lokpal draft

Social activist and National Advisory Council(NAC) Member Aruna Roy today made clear that she and her fellow RTI activists were also having difference of opinion on several points even in the Bill moved by the government in the Lok Sabha. However, she expressed satisfaction over Lok Sabha's move of referring the Bill to the Standing Committee saying that this was part of the procedure which would facilitate individuals and organsiations to incorporate people's voice in the proposed Lokpal Act. Talking to the mediapersons here this afternoon, Magsaysay awardee Ms Roy, said ''I do have differences over several points/provisions proposed in the Jan Lokpal Bill draft and the one moved by the UPA government in Parliament''. ''We want proper discussion and amendments over several points,'' she said, adding she neither favoured generalised inclusion of the Prime Minister in the purview and jurisdiction of the Lokpal as suggested in the Lokpal draft nor did support exemption to the Prime Minister from the purview and jurisdiction of the Lokpal being granted in the government's Bill.
''We want that the Lokpal should be empowered to look and examine complaints against the Prime Minister and if finds prima facie case against him than the complaint should be proceeded further only after securing consent/endorsement from the Supreme Court,'' Ms Roy said. ''Likewise, we also favour inclusion of judiciary in the purview of the Lokpal and want that not only the conduct of the judges but even the standards of the judiciary be monitored by the Lokpal,'' she added. Moreover, why only Central government should be brought under the Lokpal scanner, the same approach be extended to states through a well structured Lokayukta set-up, the NAC member added.

Hang policemen involved in fake encounters: SC

Police personnel involved in fake encounter killings should be awarded death sentence and hanged, the Supreme Court has said. A bench of justices Markandeya Katju and C K Prasad said that police personnel as custodians of law are expected to protect people and not eliminate them as contract killers. "Fake encounter killings by cops are nothing but cold-blooded brutal murder, which should be treated as the rarest of rare offence and police personnel responsible for it should be awarded death sentence. They should be hanged," Justice Katju, heading the bench, said. The bench added: “Police personnel as custodians of law are expected to protect people and not eliminate them as contract killers. Fake encounter killings by cops are nothing but cold- blooded brutal murder which should be treated as the rarest of rare offence and police personnel responsible for it should be awarded death sentence.”
When Singh’s widow Sushila Devi alleged former state minister, Rajender Rathore, was also an absconder, the bench said: “The same parameters will apply and the law shall take its own course. If crimes are committed by ordinary people, ordinary punishment should be given but if the offence is committed by policemen much harsher punishment should be given to them because they do an act totally contrary to their duties.” The court gave four weeks time to file a status report before it. It also quashed a criminal case against some CBI officials that was registered on the orders of additional chief metropolitan magistrate, Jaipur, following a complaint filed by an arrested accused. The complainant had alleged the CBI officers had subjected him to third degree torture after arresting him. Jain and Ali were part of the Special Operations Group that allegedly eliminated Dara Singh on October 23, 2006 in a fake encounter. On the widow's petition, the SC had in April last directed a CBI probe.
